A little older but here's some free advice that I had to go to college to learn: Identify if this is software or hardware or both first. If it's hardware, your computer will be totally unresponsive and will often emit this electronic "humming" sound as it isn't processing the audio correctly. If it's software that is blocking your screen, it'll look like this video. For software, your best bet is to see if this video's technique works. If you can't seem to do it, try to roll back windows to a backup that you know works. If that doesn't work, find your windows license key, write it down somewhere, and reinstall windows. For Hardware there can be 4 main issues. Your display (monitor), the cabling/connectors, the graphics card/graphics adapter, and/or problems with the motherboard/HDD/SSD. This is where it becomes a process of elimination. If you're using a computer that uses on-board graphics, then there may be more issues that this but if you are using a device with a dedicated graphics card, try to unplug the monitor from the port in your computer and plug it into a different port. If it worked, then your graphics card has a port that's going bad. If it did not, change the cabling. If that worked then the cable is bad and you can discard the bad cable. If NEITHER of those worked, try to use your monitor as a small television by plugging a device you know works, like a game console or something. If that works then your graphics card is dead or one other problem for both software/hardware. If you want to check for motherboard/HDD/SSD issues, boot the machine into safe mode (Command Prompt) and type in "chkdsk /F". This commandlet will have the system check the storage drives for any corrupt or bad files and correct the issues by reverting the files to a state in which it worked. For software/hardware boot windows into safe mode as best as you can. Go into Device Manager and uninstall your display driver and then immediately reinstall it. For Nvidia cards, you may need to go back into the Nvidia website and download it from there. No matter what graphics cards or on-board graphics you're using, you'll probably notice the screen flicker a few times, and that's perfectly normal as it is how the driver detects the best display settings. Sometimes you'll have to restart the machine but I always restart it. Sometimes it's good to turn the machine off, unplug the machine from any power source (batteries for laptops and the cable that connects to the back of your power supply), and hold the power button on for a good 10 seconds. Reconnect it all and the computer will be forced to restart from fresh and update as it goes.

Hey MDTech, I do have the same issue now. Running W10 on a laptop with a TV plugged in "HDMI", I get the black screen with the mouse flickering in the beginning. I went to the Shell file, and it already had explorer.exe in it, nothing was changed. The problem is still there, any ideas?

I do CTRL ALT DELETE, it brings up the menu, and I select Task Manager. After that, nothing happens. It just brings me back to the black screen with my mouse
