The acoustics of the valleys that the Cass shops are near and in make most whistles sound much better than they might if heard in flatlander country. You really have to hear it in person to truly appreciate it.
@flynnlizzy54693 жыл бұрын
I can still hear them, lying in bed late at night in my family home along the Hudson, circa 1950s. Unfortunately I can no longer picture them in my head. IIRC, different seasons caused them to sound different, more muffled on steamy hot summer nights and just amazing sounding on clear, cold fall nights. Great memories !

This was used by the K-5 Pacifics and L-4 Mohawks. The Mikados and earlier Mohawks used the 5 chime whistle, the Hudsons used a Nathan 6 chime, and the Niagaras used a Hancock long bell 3 chime.

So the Mercury Shrouded K-5s had this. Astonishing.

I thought this was the Niagara whistle. Does that mean they wore the same as UP 844 and N&W 611?
@bigharryyy03 Жыл бұрын
@@samuelbenge524 Yes, although they hardly ever used their whistles because they also had air horns that the engineers were encouraged to use instead
@zenith8101 Жыл бұрын
@@bigharryyy03 Didn't some of the Niagara's also carry 6 chimes? Previous footage that thankfully was caught before they went "poof" shows them with whistles that in the least *sound* like 6 chimes, not a hancock 3 chime like 611 or the other engines have.

Did the Niagaras also carry this whistle?
@DavidSanchez-ks4ub7 жыл бұрын
southernpacific4346 The NYC Niagaras carried a Hancock 3 chime long bell whistle similar to that of the UP 844, SP 4449, N&W 611, and many others. They were the only locomotives on the New York Central to be equipped with that whistle. On an even more interesting note, they were also equipped with air horns that were used fairly often when the engine was at speed to reduce the amount of steam wasted. Not that the Niagaras had any steaming issues, which is far from the truth, but the NYC saw it fit so that's the way they had it.
