@tqrx The Luftwaffe used a nose gun design with the blast tube passing through the inverted "V" of the V12 engines and exiting through the propeller hub, which was not centerline to the crankshaft. This was used on the Me109 and long-nose Fw190s, depending on the sub-series model. The Fw190D-12 was designed to use a 30mm nose cannon and the Fw190D-13 used the 20mm nose cannon. The rear of the gun was between the pilot's feet. The magnetos were typically at the rear of the engine.

UK5098 Technology helps in victory, but victory is something achieved by a man, not a machine. A shit pilot can fly the best plane and can still get shot down by a shit plane flown by the best pilot. Sure, the shit pilot has great advantage, but what good is an advantage if you don't know how to use it.

I think it is always awesome to see relics of World War II because as the years go by, we are going to lose more and more veterans of that era. It is one thing to see footage of planes such as this, but seeing an actual plane that you can physcially touch is completely different experience. Aside from damage action and water, that plane is in remarkable condition.

Damn this is a RARE Bf-109. You can see the interesting first-gen armament on that thing comprised of six 7.92mm machine guns. This model didn't even have the cannons so synonymous with the Emil models of the 109. Of course it was upgraded but I have never seen an E1 before, not even in history books.

They wore the more usual style of marking for a Geschwaderkommodore, and featured a much broader aft fuseage yellow theatre band. Note, too, the winged red 'U' uniy badge, which was introduced when JG 3 was formally named the Jagdgeschwader 'udet' on 1 dec 1941 following the death of ernst Udet, the luftwaffe's chief of aircraft procurement and supply, this bf 109 he walked away from and returned to action but in 1943 was killed in another crash landing. His top score was 137 victories

Logan Cody Besides reading the description on the video ;) I search for old wrecks as a hobby and this find was pretty legendary.My wife is from Bulgaria and we spend a lot of time in Eastern Europe since we have a place there.But most of what I find is old tanks and ex Soviet era planes etc.Although the coolest I found was a DC 3/C 47 or the Russian Li-2 copy in the Black Sea while diving.We're actually in contact with some people about possibly raising it too next year.Although they'll only finance it if it's a real DC3/C47 :(

The pilot was Wulf-Dietrich Widowitz. The plane was lost in April 1942 escorting Bf-110s when the flight was intercepted by Soviet Hurricanes. Widowitz put the plane down on a frozen lake, and Luftwaffe mechanics salvaged what they could before it sank through the ice. Widowitz returned to service and died in a crash about a year later. There are some gaps in the plane's service history but you can see the desert tan under the layers of paint, since this Bf-109 served in North Africa before being transferred to the Eastern Front.

A man in Broomfield,Co had gone to Russia and retrieved two 109s. He stored them in a hanger at our nearby airport in a hanger. He allowed me to come in and inspect his relics. I looked at the wing and discovered a spend 20mm Russian shell lodged next to the spar of the aircraft. This shell had not been touched by a human hand since the plane was shot down. There were several other shell marks - expecially in the propeller. The pilot did a dead stick landing.

Big mistake on my part, I read the other posts. Later on that night. Its just when they pulled one out in Norway they snapped it due to silt in the body. A Wellington in Scotland or the lakes snapped that. When you think you have all the time to work it all out to do it right people still are able to stuff it up.

The nose was in fact yellow, Acording to the book the planes were painted and at some point repainted and upgraded acording to the units spects. The book shows his personal plane with its marking since this plane was built in 1939 im sure as the post from fivecentsplease states it had many paint jobs and seen lots of action. I have mixed feeling about some being restore but this plane is totaly gutted and it would be wonderfull to see it restored in the colors and marking before sunk.

@marcoapollo2466
@marcoapollo2466 10 жыл бұрын
WOW you should write a book that was amazing! All though you said the P51 was built because of the 109, which was kind of true its main purpose was to escort bombers which it did very well. the range on a P51 blew most fighter of the time out the water. What I find extremely interesting was the fact that they asked the company North American Aviation for a plane that could have the range of a bomber and can still combat the luftwaffe and they designed and had prototype up and running only after a little more than 100 days!! I will admit the first few variants were not the best the p51 A struggled to compete with other planes over 1500ft due to the under powered allison engines until the P51 B with the new Packard Merlin super charged engines. thats when the mustang started to live up to its potential and as for not having the best rate of climb didnt really matter as much because the mustangs usually already had altitude advantage when they were up with the bombers the 109s really needed the rate of climb advantage because they had to climb to reach the mustangs. And actually the design of the mustang was some what revolutionary with the design of the mustangs wings as they produced less drag with leminar flow airfoil the mustang had 20% less drag. The only thing holding it back was its tendency to spin out of control at lower altitudes when flying slow, but with the P51 D's famous bubble top canopy it became a thing of the past. as for the armament its 6 .50cal guns could easily shred any 109 or FW190 apart and had more than enough ammunition to carry out the rest of the mission it doesnt really need cannons which may be big and powerful but were prone to jamming (which was a big problem with the 109s) and projectiles fired from cannons at high speeds were inaccurate and slow compared to the .50cals plus you can carry sooo much more ammunition compared to the cannons of the 109. The p51 proved to be one of the best fighter of WW2 and still saw regular service during the korean war. Both are extremely formidable aircraft with their advantages and disadvantages but at the end of the day the its the pilot that will decide who would win in a dogfight. you could have all the advantages but still lose a dogfight to a good pilot. anyways I can truly say for the first time that a girl obviously know more about ww2 planes than I do ( I know more about Vietnam and modern jets than I do about ww2 planes) (But I know a lot more about guns than planes anyways) which is awesome I wish there were more girls like you where I live. btw sorry if i messed up any facts Im not the best at knowing this stuff but I tried my best,and there is probably more facts as how good the mustang is as a fighter and sorry it took a while for the reply because you replied to me at 12:00 Am where I live and I was asleep.

The engine was recovered at the same time as the aircraft. It has a cannon hole in it and the current owners have found a very rare crated engine for the rebuild. The plane sat on the ice long enough for Luftwaffe ground crews to salvage parts before it sank. There is a very good chance that they salvaged the guns to use again.

Konaber krimskrams i never made a point, all i said that such damage would more likely be from a russian 23mm instead of a 20mm hispano. You can’t disagree on that, considering only a tiny percentage of luftwaffe planes on the eastern front were shot down by non-soviet allied aircraft.

+Bill A Any water recovery (fresh water and especially saltwater) should undergo a chemical treatment to remove minerals and impurities that were absorbed by the metals. They would react with the oxygen in the air. Hopefully this airframe was treated after the initial recovery. It is unclear what is planned for this plane now. It has been waiting to undergo a full restoration to flying but I have also recently read comments that the Friedkin family who own it may leave it as-is. I would prefer it restored, since the paint colors that were on it have already been washed off during cleaning. (It was more colorful when it came out of the water and what you see now if the desert colors it had when it flew in Africa.)

+Bran of Attrebates Well, the historically accurate version of "blah blah blah" was the reorganization of Bayerische Flugzeugwerke into Messerschmitt AG with Willy Messerschmitt made chairman in July 1938. This plane represents those who fought against the scheme for world conquest. The Scheme is fairly simple: 1. Force people into using privately controlled fiat currency; 2. Force people away from self-sufficiency and into wage labor; 3. Pay people with privately controlled fiat currency that can easily be devalued; 4. Place people under financial stress so they are forced to take out bank loans and use credit cards; and 5. Simply buy up everything.

German planes were named after the company, not the designer so the correct name is bf (bayerische flugzeugwerke) -109. Only later when Willy Messerschmidt became the owner of the company the planes started getting named Me (i.e Me-410).

The pilot did not die in this crash. It was a controlled belly landing on a frozen lake and the plane later sank. The pilot was killed in another aircraft later during the war.

Since the pilot survived this forced landing, there was no skeleton. He was killed in another crash later in the war.

I saw a similar 109 several years ago. It also made a forced lading on a frozen lake. A Russian fighter had fired a salvo and there were several dings on the propeller and fusulage. I looked at the wing and sitting next to the main spar was a spent 20mm shell. I was the first person to handle this slug since WWII.

Just... wow. Wouldn't it be something if that video of the ME-109 being shot down in the beginning was the same one as this 109? This is an amazing video. The music is a perfect fit, too. :)

wow! very cool find. definetly a few bullet holes in the fuselage, maybe a 20mm cannon hole in the wing. TheXxVIP3RxX, that part of the tail may not have been "sliced off". later production ME 109s had a slightly taller tailfin extension made of wood, so it probably just rotted off. i cant be positive if this is a plane with this extension, but since it has the later style solid prop spinner it is possible. i cant believe how well preserved the canopy is!

+Greg's Airplanes and Automobiles The are other planes in those lakes but the local laws and local interest have to allow them to be removed. And some went down with live ordnance in them that would need to be disarmed.

Thats amazing. To see the original paint, as it was in the colors and scheme in WW2, along with the battle damage. looks like a big flak round or cannon round in the right wing, and a number of bullet holes near the cockpit. It is interesting to see the damage that likely took it down ~70 years ago.

Imagine its former glory, you can almost hear the rattling and spitting sound of the engine and its pistons getting ready to take off. As it gains speed and momentum, the propeller leaves a trail of minor turbulence and whooshing noise, off it goes to the sky!

There is a story like that here too,. Over a lake very near to where im sitting right now there was a dogfight between an English and a German plane at the last days of the war.The English plane was shot down and landed on the ice where it sunk later on. The pilot was rescued.but the plane is still on the bottom of the lake.. The bottom on this lake is said to consist of bog sludge, so it might be difficult to recover if it can be found at all, but if so happens it should be very well preserved.

The occupying forces scrapped them, since there were entire British and American units tasked with destroying surrendered equipment of all types. Any spares in foreign territory were used post-war for a few short years. I've never heard of surplus Me109s being purchased since they were foreign equipment to be demilled and scrapped, however from the late 40s to the 1960s surplus Allied warbirds were available for near scrap-value. Most US German aircraft are the test planes released by the AAF.

Little is known about the service history of this aircraft between 1939 and 1940 and there isn't much in surviving records. It was overhauled and stripped of paint in 1941 (erasing unit markings) and returned to service in North Africa. In March 1942, this aircraft was transferred to the Eastern front to 5/JG5 as a replacement aircraft. Widowitz received this plane in late March and it crashed on April 4, 1942. It was very well-preserved by cold freshwater lake.

No. After service in North Africa, this aircraft was one of two replacement aircraft delivered to 5/JG5 on 20-March-1942 and flew missions in the Murmansk area. It was lost on 4-April-1942, having been shot down by Soviets flying Hurricanes. The lake is near Luostari in Murmansk. After recovery, the plane was exported to the UK and eventually sold to a US collector.
