I know I’m late to the party, but the RAF Museum’s Me 410 isn’t the last one left. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in America has one as well, though to be fair, the RAF Museum’s example is the only Me 410 on display, while the Smithsonian’s example is in storage, and has not been on display except for guided tours of the storage facility that it’s in right now.

You're never late to the party mate. I'm the user who posted this comment originally, at the time I did believe she was the last 410 in existance. However as you said she's not re-built and is in storage, same as the Ta-152 and Ho-229 aircraft. It'd be nice to see the American example and others re-built to complete status.

I was a member of the Aerospace Society too, in the 80's, I spent many a happy hour working on this beauty, was gutted when it was moved.I once found a letter written in German under the pilots seat, when translated, it turned out to be pornographic. Later, i worked on the Bf110G, Fw190S-8 and He162 at Hendon.

+Mike Shilton What you say about working on this Dora doesn't make any sense. When Doug Champlin bought the plane in 1972 the seat was missing. Champlin contracted an aircraft restorer whose wife worked for Messerschmitt aerospace in Germany, and the plane was shipped to Germany and restored from 1972 to approximately 1975. There is a photo of Champlin sitting with Professor Tank who assisted with the project back then. The plane was fully restored again about six years ago.

I used to be a member of the aerospace museum society in the late 70's/early 80's and the society was responsible for turning the aircraft stored at Cosford into a working museum, the founding of the society was the beginning of it all, then Hendon realised we were making money out of it to improve the museum so took it over lock,stock and barrel then promptly stopped us working on any of the aircraft because it looked 'untidy'. The Me 410A was something of a favourite of mine, it may look ugly to some but for ugly read businneslike, it was designed to do a job not look pretty, the interior of the fuselage I cleared of birds nests, a dead rat, various other rubbish and cleaned up the cockpit in the process. The aircraft left Cosford and spent nine months parked outside at Hendon in all weathers before coming back to Cosford, later it was sent to RAF St Athan, why god only knows, while there they got the engines running which should never have been allowed as the last time they were run was around 1946 and could have suffered internal damage, rumour has it that when the engines were run up she suddenly tried to nose over and the prop tips hit the concrete, thats why an irreplaceable pair of DVM props was butchered having the tips cropped off square, did they hope nobody would notice?. Because of this no engines are run at St Athan now, it was all unofficial anyway and as I said, should never have been allowed, the only way they could do the engine runs was to jury-rig the electrics and throttle, all the electrics in the cockpit and throttle controls etc are either chopped through or disconneccted, safe to say it will never fly again, the Me410 in the Smithsonian Collection is just a fuselage only I was told when I wrote to them (I was in charge of research at Cosford), but in a shot of the fuselage I am possitive I saw a pair of wings with German markings in the background in a vertical storage frame. The Cosford Me410 is in need of considerable restoration as there is signs of corrosion thanks to nine months outside, the serial number 420430 is genuine but markings are all wrong, she was with ZG26 but her original markings are open to debate.

Do you have any knowledge whether the Stuka was ever run up like the Fw190 and Me410? There has been some discussion that is was briefly considered getting it airworthy for the filming of the BoB film in 1968, but the wise choice was made to not do that. I have also read some discussion that it was brought to taxi condition. Even in 1968, the Stuka was too old to risk for flight, but a film of it running would be neat. You are correct about the prop tips on the Me 410 and now they are squared off. You would think that this would be an easy "cosmetic" fix by a competent propeller shop today, if not re-making them for a higher price tag. Perhaps when the NASM gets around to restoring their Me410 they would be able to collaborate and provide assistance with restoration of the Cosford Me 410.

I just saw the video on that beautiful airplane! And of course I saw your comment as of course I find it very interesting! I know very little about that airplane in that museum and I find it very sad that it has been mishandled such as being left outdoor for such long time! But I was very interested regarding the fact that you would never have let them start the engines! The reason I'm writing to you is that I was listening the sound of the engines and I was surprised to hear a strange noise like a wirring especially the first one! First I thought it was the bad quality of the sound but I realized that it was very noticeable! I had the impression that one of the gears inside the engine is "grinding"! Am I wrong? Because if is that no way they should have started those engines!

Paolo Viti The German DB engines utilized an inertia starter that spun up a flywheel which then engaged a starter gear to turn over the engine, which is what you hear at the start. It's a weight-saving feature found on quite a few Allied and Axis planes from the 30s and 40s. The German DB engines also have a very loud and distinctive supercharger whine while running.

I know very well that both the DB and the Jumo engines used the inertia starter as a weight saving measure but it has a distinctive "winning" sound when it is cranked up and it dissipate once the engine starts! Also the compressor "winnes" but after warming up also that will be less noticeable! What I hear was a persistent "wirring" as if some gears are grinding itself out! Of course I might be absolutely wrong but nevertheless I do find it a bit strange!

FiveCentsPlease out of curiosity I listened again to some of the restored Me-109 G4 and the G10 and I confirm that both are "winning" only when the engines are cranking up! I do not hear at all the "wirring" of the Me-410! Of course I'm not an expert but I did restore a couple of engines and after reassembling them they were purring like cats! Nothing to do I love engines!

David Mitchell The DB603A was the first generation of this engine and produced 1750hp, which is pretty good considering it was on only 87 octane B fuel instead of 100/130. There were several other variants of this engine such as the DB603E which was both more powerful and had a higher altitude supercharger. A few were produced. The was the 2250 DB603LA with two stage supercharger as used in Ta 152C. The DB603EM of 2350hp not built due to shortage of C3 fuel, the DB693L of 2400hp (an DB603LA with inter-cooling) and finally DB603N of 2800hp with C3+MW50. I suspect with these engines the Me 410 would have exceeded 450-460mph (cube law)

I've just seen this video and it brings back many great memories but I would like to point out that there several errors in Caliph Nah's comments (1) A full survey of the aircraft systems was carried out before any decision was taken to bring the aircraft to life. (2) There was Never any nose overs during any engine runs on any of the aircraft at St Athan. (3) Only aircraft that had complete throttle linkage were considered. (4) All oil and fuel systems checked and tested over many weeks prior to any engine start were carried out. (5) Many of the aircraft in museums have butchered electrical systems due to many moves over their life's.

+Bill Clark I'm hearing conflicting information that the prop tips on the Me-410 were damaged during a move or a prop strike and they were cut to even them out. Either way, a competent propeller shop would be able to make an easy repair for static purposes or duplicate new ones if future work is carried out on the plane. Can you confirm if the Stuka was ever run up? I have read that it was during the making of the Battle of Britain film, but I have never seen evidence of such.

These captured aircraft were jumbled and repainted and perhaps one day some of them can be given forensic restorations to wartime condition. The expertise is available now, so it's just time and money.

@@AC-op4dg A few of the Flugwerk Fw-190A replicas are moving toward Fw-190D conversion with Allison V12s. There are some DB-603s around and I'm surprised that nobody has considered a Fw-190D replica with DB-603 as an alternative to a rare and expensive Jumo 213. Kurt Tank preferred the DB-603 but could not get them during the war.

Startup is the inertial starter---a heavy flywheel that is spun up to engage a starter dog to the engine. When the engine is running you hear the supercharger impeller, and the super charger is very loud on the DB series engines.

cheeki breeki The Bosch starters could be operated by hand, or electrically. Note the electric start cart in the background that is connected to the plane. The hand crank option was for rough field conditions or perhaps for rapid take off when the ground crews would get things ready in a hurry.

+magna4100 They don't roll out the Me410 or their Fw190 to do engine runs anymore, so they have likely been inhibited. For preservation, it is not good to just run them and stop because you can introduce moisture and other corrosives into the engines. Running them for long periods or flying would actually be better, but this aircraft will likely never be flown and it is incomplete internally.

Only two survivors, both in museums. Perhaps a wreck will turn up one day, though it would a very ambitious project to copy and build one from scratch. 3D scanning technology will make it possible to image the airframe into CAD software and reverse engineer the structure. Those who have that much money are more interested in single-seat fighters, since you could restore several for the costs to restore an Me-410.

Really? I had no idea the NASM had one! Probably never be restored in my life time though! They've been working on the He219 for years. I went to the Hazy Center ion 2012 and it was all there but the wings,now they've painted the wings but I haven't seen anything about them finishing it off.

***** There would not be many of these examples surviving today if the AAF had not donated the planes to the Smithsonian. It isn't their mission to have a flying museum but to preserve historical artifacts not just for now but for generations from now. It is doubtful that individuals older than Gen X will have direct interest in WW2. When we are gone WW2 will be as distant as the Civil War. Model companies were given access to the Ta-152 to measure for scale plastic models. If someone finds a Ta-152 wreck to start a rebuild, then perhaps there will be a chance to use modern 3D scanning to get accurate measurements. It is a lot more difficult to conjure another example out of thin air.

***** Which private collectors have stated that they wish to start a Ta-152? The major players with the money to undertake such a project haven't. The NASM has the only aircraft ID that survives in the world. There are no other known wrecks or IDs to start a project from at this time or until a wreck is found. Without an ID, they project doesn't exist.

***** It is my understanding that model kit manufacturers have been given access to the Ta-152 on occasion for accurate measurements. There has been no Ta-152 rebuild activity outside of the NASM because they have the only surviving example. Regarding access to aircraft, you are correct that historically the NASM policy is to provide any blueprints they have upon request with the condition of signing a waiver that they are not to be used to construct a flying example. An aircraft ID is similar to a VIN number on a car and without it you don't have an aircraft. The NASM owns the only known surviving Ta-152 ID, so there would not be much activity elsewhere to build anything for a "complete" Ta-152. New 3D technology could be a game-changer for rapid prototyping to reconstruct new examples of various rare aircraft but so far this has only been applied to a few restorations including a Typhoon project in Canada.

***** The replica Me-262s were only possible from a private restoration agreement with the US Navy to restore their original Me-262 and copy the parts for new-build examples. Original Me-262 production drawings were incomplete to use for construction They even copied a design flaw and had to correct it later with new engineering. The new Me-262s have a separate type designation from the originals, but they were "assigned" original serial numbers starting from the end of the WW2 production line. That Me-262 project began way back in 1993 long before modern 3D techniques that are available today for reverse engineering. It took a long time before they had flyable airframes.

***** I would argue that the new-build Me-262s were easy compared with recreating a Ta-152 from scratch. They just recreated the airframe and hung a modernized power package on them, in essence creating a second-generation Me-262 that was given a new type designation by FAA. (Me-262A-1c, etc...) There is no equivalent solution for a Ta-152.

+masamune200 They should work but it is no longer rolled out and started. It needs some repairs inside to cockpit and electrics, and the prop tips that were cut off after a mishap need to be repaired or new props should be made for it.

...but you need two production lines for the engines then. It is effective, but is also very costly. Most piston and turboprop aircraft don't have counter-rotating engines.

The aircraft has not flown and it is still on display. The engine runs are no longer performed either.

Where is this? Germany I assume? Strange that the props rotate the same way, since counter rotation (like P-38s) eliminates the torque.

Quite an interesting aircraft... I feel like if they had managed to somehow pull the perfected Me410 out of the bag in 1941 or 1942, and use it exclusively with single engine fighter cover, they might have had a rather high performance heavy dive bomber. Maybe even into 1943/44 it would have been good in that role. But sadly, not a fighter at all...

It uses inverted V12 engines. Using Allisons or any other ''upright'' V12 would require too much re-engineering. @@WarbirdKid1940

@Craig Wooldridge it is still too rare of an aircraft to risk flying again because even "expert" pilots can make mistakes or something on the plane can fail.

To bad about this bird. One of the more unsung warbird's, to bad they did not maintain her. It's probably to late for it as i'm sure it has sat and deteriorated. Beautiful plane though the 410.

+gowron277a Doubtful that it will every fly again, and I understand that the cockpit and electrics are incomplete and were patched together to make it run. The things is, there are a decent amount of Luftwaffe restorations in progress and I could see that knowledge and interest being used to make the needed repairs and freshen up the plane (and at least repair the props that were squared off years ago.) But, again, they probably won't go flying with it in our lifetimes.

Whilst its in one piece make a few copies to fly. Don't trust it to the yanks because there'll trash it it like the Dallas crash.

+@ludo9234 There is another Me-410 in the storage area of the Smithsonian. Take a look at this one again and notice the squared-off propeller tips. At some point, the aircraft got tipped and some genius decided that the best way to deal with it was to just cut off the tips rather than fixing the prop. The cockpit and electronics are also gutted, so the Brits didn't really take care of this one either. I doubt there will ever be a 410 flying, but the newest 3D tools and manufacturing will make it much easier to rapid prototype and build parts to restore aircraft.
