I've always admired the FW-190, having read intently about it, and starting with '90s television, and later the internet & KZbin, listening to any veteran that's flown one. It had to be a handful in war trim, all gassed up, all loaded up, weight, weight, weight. It had vicious stall characteristics, no warning. I recall reading one WW2 pilot talking about chasing a one ninety in a low level circle, him remembering the German looking back at him through the canopy "eyes bugging out" as he put it, when all of a sudden the aircraft snapped out of control & in to the sea. I also recall another WW2 pilot whom said he never saw a 109 (Messerschmitt) out of control.

This aircraft crashed at the Classic Fighters Omaka air show, at Easter 2015. It did its display on the practice day and sounded wonderful. During its rollout after landing it was hit by a sudden wind change and when the pilot applied the brakes only the left side worked. One huge ground loop and a cloud of dust later the undercarriage was wiped off and the aircraft has been in storage at Omaka since then.

@@dcampbell4585 Yes. They had it up and running again at the Classic Fighters Omaka air show at Easter. I hadn't heard anything about progress on the repairs since it had crashed and was very pleased when they brought it out. It did a run on Friday morning and got towed back to the workshop for a quick weld job on a cracked exhaust manifold. Back out after lunch and into the air again. It looks and sounds fabulous. The commentator said undercarriage parts had been sourced from overseas, as well as a replacement engine. When it crashed, the propellor hit the ground and, even though it was wood and made to break up in those circumstances, the procedure is to do a total strip-down of the engine and inspect everything that a sudden stop might damage. It was quicker to get a replacement engine.

One of the first FW190's the Allies saw was one which mistakenly landed in southern England , at night. The weather was bad and the pilot thought he was at an aerodrome in France . This was a tremendous gift as the Allies had one to test ,finally, and they found out it was an excellent fighter aircraft
From what I understand their is only one original BMW 801 D-2 radial engine in existence that runs that was used in the FW190's.

Many people don't know, that the ME 109 only allowed 15-20 minutes operation time over England, when starting from France! Whereas if the FW 190 had been available, it would have been up to and over one hour!! The "Battle of Britain" might have gone differently! The main reason, why the ME 109 was chosen as primary fighter plane was COST! A ME 109 cost approx. 120000 Reichsmark to build, whereas a FW 190 more than double that! The ME 109 was built using "forced, unpaid" labour, but the FW 190 used highly qualified people from Bremen! By the way, many of the surviving workers from Focke-Wulf worked later in the famous Borgward factories, turning out, the first reliable German cars!
@andyr71985 жыл бұрын
The Battle of Britain was won by the English becuase Hitler turned his bombers on London instead of concentrating on the airfields. An HE-111 got lost and dropped it's bombs on London in error. Hitler had ordered no raids on London at that time. In retaliation, Bomber Command flew a raid over Berlin. After that, Hitler threw all his toys out of his pram and ordered a Blitz on London. That was a huge tactical error which cost Germany the battle as it allowed the RAF to rebuild it's airfields plus, Hitler never took seriously the advantage of the British invention of RADAR. In my opinion the FW190 would have made no real difference in the end under those circumstrances. I believe had he won it, I think Germany would have gone on to win the war as USA would not have had an allied foothold in Europe and considering he declared war on USA on Dec 8th 1941 he would have had all of Europe to stage his war. Losing the Battle of Britian was the turning point in my humble opinion. But I think we should show respect to ALL the pilots that flew in that battle and gave their lives.

@@andyr7198 all correct concerning BOB but the RAF still had a huge tactical advantage as ackerman said
@andyr71985 жыл бұрын
@@LtBrown1956 I am not sure where you have read that Ackerman has noted the "huge tactical advantage", however at that time Germany had met no real resistance in Europe until the English just said nope, you shall not pass!.. England had the advantage not just because of geography, but because we had brilliant minds just as they did. It is known that Hitler didn't actually want to go to war with the UK and it was actually the English that declared war on Germany, Hitler never declared war on England and for good reason. Advantage or not, if England did not defeat Germany during the Battle of Britain things would have gone more favourably for Germany as then there would only be a war on one front. I am English and proud but I always will consider that the German war machine was easily the best at that time but Hitler was arrogant and a poor tacticain and honestly, Thank God for R. J. Mitchel and Rolls Royce and Alan Turing, amazing people that turned the tide. The engineering and ability of Germany was remarkable and worthy of great respect. Lets face it, USA would not have gone to space without Wernher von Braun..
@LtBrown19565 жыл бұрын
@@andyr7198 "huge tactical advantage" ...my phrase NOT his I believe that the 109 having only a "15-20 minute operation time over england" (Ackerman's actual words) is a huge tactical advantage for the RAF who are flying over their own nation and often over their own airfields. it wasn't so much about their geography but about the fact that they only had to successfully defend the skies over southern england while the germans were attempting to gain the air supremacy needed to make a sea invasion plausible. another way of stating this is the RAF merely had to deny the luftwaffe that air supremacy. that is the tactical situation and it was a far easier objective for the RAF. this does NOT cheapen the british victory nor imply that the BOB was unimportant. BTW, germany would have had to subdue england via land invasion NOT merely best the RAF to have a single front war. I also believe that the germans could have successfully held back the RN and had a successful invasion of england. But this would have had to be followed by a successful campaign by against the regular army and the territorial army for the german strategy to have been fully successful. However, there are many who disagree and state that the RN could have halted any attempt by the german army to invade southern england even WITH the luftwaffe having air supremacy. ....And they may be correct. the BOB was just the prelude to a longer military campaign that the wehrmacht hoped to knock england out of the war. When they lost this prelude there was NO way they could take the second and third steps. this is why the RAF tactical situation was superior to the germans. thanks for reading

My dad's cousin was shot down by multiple FW-190s over Berlin and as bombadier he carefully destroyed the "top secret" Norden bomb sight and bailed out to land about 100 yards from a German flak position. He fluffed out his 'chute and carefully laid his .45 on it and waited for the Germans to arrive in a Kubel. To cuzs surprise the officer had been educated at some posr school in the UK and spoke English with a distinct British accent when asking for "one of your delicious American cigarettes." So much for the Chesterfields. Cuz spent 18 months in a Luftstalag and would never eat a turnip again for the rest of his life.

She wasnt called the butcher bird for nothing. The FW190 was every bit the match to the P51. The mustang gets the accolade of wars best fighter but what most people wont admit is by the time the mustang came along germanys best pilots were all gone due to attrittion from so much flying combat. Had they been around when the mustang came out the 8th air force fighter pilots woulda found a whole different scenario as the FW 190 in a aces hands was every bit the aircraft the 51 was as well as it being the best roller of the war. Actually the 51 did very little to turn the tide of the war cuz P47 Thunderbolt which was there from the beginning broke the back of the luftwaffe and took out all germanys great aces.Luckily for us hitler was a idiot and didnt see the Me262 for what it was ' A war winning weapon which if it had been around and in the great luftwaffes aces hands would have stopped daylight bombing for good as the bomber crews woulda had no chance against it.

+Rob Bader Only one original WW2 example is currently restored to airworthy with the BMW engine. (One or two more coming later.) All other Fw-190s flying are from a production run of replicas that were equipped with the ASh engine to save on cost of ownership.

"Coppied enginering" oh, here we go again... how do you judge terrible performance by just looking at the startup, tell me... ASh-82 was putting out around 1800 HP, that's not terrible at all. Since this is late production (Chinese, btw - those are the ones coppying), it should be able to put out around 2000 HP. BUT - noone is going to run the engines at its max performance just for a stupid demo.

I don't understand why the plane has immaculate paint, except for JG54 Grünherz (Green Heart) badge looks like it was applied with chalk and flown through a rainstorm? Nowotny is spinning in his grave!

That's what I'm talkin about you see it all the time roll out a German fighter from world war II Start it up but never take it to the air

It has to do with the insurance terms...companies don't allow plane owners to take the risk of flying such expensive and much treasured old fighters. All they will permit is an engine start on the ground.
