Whether people like Danny Dyer or not, he is spot-on with that comment. Football should only be about supporting your local team, and not picking teams that win week in, week out. Now, myself & my family come from Islington which is why I am Arsenal. I am nearly 25, so some people may class me as a new breed. However, I am proud of supporting the team of the place where I hail from. It's a good laugh, it's great, but at the same it's stressful & it's bloody hard to watch at times. Doesn't matter though, it's Arsenal & that is what football is all about. Taking the good with the bad and vice versa. Mr Dyer's message to the Cockney Reds was spot-on! As mentioned above, I've got 2 cousins (both brothers), and one is a Man United fan & the other is a Liverpool fan. They're not even from Manchester or Liverpool, yet they harp on about how great their "teams" are. They have never been to Old Trafford or Anfield, and they're from Hammersmith. The reality is that both of them should support Fulham. If not Fulham, they could easily support West Ham or even Charlton if they wanted. At least they'd be supporting a team from London & not being glory hunters. I've got some other cousins and some other family members who are Yiddos. It is painful for me to say that but I can't fault them because the reality is that they are supporting their local team. Even if they are deluded & clueless like the rest of the Yids, at least it's a local team for them.

yes danny was spot on in relation to the cockney reds. i am from dublin in ireland and unlike all my friends growing up who supported liverpool or man utd i supported west ham. we have not won much over the years but you hope some day you will. my self the wife and kids get over to upton park as often as possible. my sons first game at west ham when we beat chelsea 1-0. di canio came off the bench and scored. something i or he will never forget. so it is our club. ps gunner boy. good luck for the season. you are a proper fan. coyi

dublinhammer Hmmmmm.....never thought West Ham would be popular in Ireland? Then again, I was always surprised Man United or Liverpool were popular there because my presumptions were that Arsenal, Birmingham City & Everton were the most popular English clubs in Ireland due to the large Irish Catholic following of all and due to the fact that they were amongst the first clubs to set up supporters groups in Ireland. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Everton were the first English team to setup an Irish supporters group? Then I think we followed. Tbh mate, I've got no problem with international fans. I've met our international fans from Poland, Sweden & a few other places. Foreign fans are always going to be attracted to Premiership teams because across the world, they show the Premiership on the telly. They also get attracted to teams wherever their fellow countrymen go. So they will have a team that they like. E.g. Newcastle had Asprilla, and as a result a few Colombians purchased season tickets. So it happens, however when back home, I can guarantee that 99.9% of the foreign fans support their local teams. I was drinking with our Polish fans in the pub before one of our games years ago. A couple of them that I spoke to came from Gdynia & were massive Arka Gdynia fans. If you support your local team as well as West Ham, whether it be Shamrock, Bohemians or St Patrick's, then you have my respect. Cheers mate, hopefully our FA Cup win may lead onto something but we shall have to wait and see.

Hamilton Richardson With international fans, a lot of Premiership teams are going to get international support because Premiership football comes on the telly all over the world. For example, at Arsenal we have fan groups in Europe that I have met from places like Poland, Sweden and Spain. You get these fans that get attracted to Premiership teams because players from their countries are representing the clubs. However, when it comes to supporting a team within their own country, they support their local team. The Swedish fans that I met were from Stockholm, Karlstad and places but even though they liked Arsenal, they supported their local teams. I respect that you like West Ham, however, when supporting a club within your country, you should ideally support a team within your area and not jump ship to New York Red Bulls or LA Galaxy like some people do so. As long as you support your local team too, I can respect that. I met some of the American football (or soccer as you call it) fan group of Celtic whilst I was in Glasgow visiting my family. They were most likely into Celtic due to their Irish/Scottish background. However, despite telling me of their love for Celtic, they supported their local team back in the states.

Fake Ham Doesn't matter mate, you should still check them out sometime. I could be from any part of the UK. You name anywhere, if I was from Bristol, I'd probably support Bristol City or Bristol Rovers. If I was from Grimsby, I would support Grimsby and so on. That's exactly why I support Arsenal. Whenever my glory hunting cousins (as mentioned on my main post) take the piss out of me whenever Arsenal lose, I just love the fact that I can at least remind them that I support my local team and that even if we'd gone another 10/20 years without a trophy, I'll always support them. I don't know gridiron mate, I only know the word soccer (it's called football btw! :D). If Washington DC genuinely is your closest football team, then you have every right to support them. Otherwise, nothing wrong with supporting a team close to you even if they aren't great.

Not necessarily - back in the day that is what football would have been about because the world was a lot bigger so to watch football, you had to support your local clubs. The world is a lot smaller now and there is so much football available. You can see most clubs on the telly and it is also a lot easier to go and travel to different grounds than it would have been in the past, so of course people are going to support the bigger clubs. Also, if your parents and grandparents are from manchester and they both support united, but you were born in London, you are more likely to support the club you were brought up with than the team which is geographically closer to you.

I did not know West Ham United had celebrity fans like this. Do West Ham United have a reputation for this? Dyer has charimsa as an actor. I think it would be great if he could support Inverness Caledonian Thistle. By the way, I would like to ask the English soccer systems to help the Scottish, and Welsh soccer systems. Let me first point out I don't support merging the British Leagues together. As this would end our national identity, culture and history. I want us to have three strong leagues on Great Britain Island, rather than just 1 or two. My belief is for Pan-Great Britain Cups, all the way down the levels at male and female soccer, on top of the domestic and European football we play at present. Ideas could include. A) A Great Britain Premier Cup, played between all EPL sides who have not qualified for Europe. Plus all Scottish and Welsh Premier sides. A knockout or group stage tournament. B) Invite all Scottish teams who have not qualified for Europe, plus a selection of Welsh Premier sides into the Football League Trophy (THE EFL TROPHY). That is the competition for English League One and League Two club sides. C) Invite all Welsh Premier sides, and some Southern Scottish clubs into the English non-league FA Trophy. D) Invite all Welsh Premier and some Scottish Southern sides into the English non-league FA VASE. E) Have a Welsh Gold Cup, where the senior 1st teams of all Welsh Premier sides play against the under-21 teams of Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers, plus the under-21 teams of all English Premier sides. F) Invite some selected Scottish, and Welsh sides into the English FA Cup, or English League Cup. It would be the best of both worlds, where we keep our own leagues and European competition qualification, but on top of that have PAN-GREAT BRITAIN CUPS. The Scottish have allowed Welsh, English, Irish sides into the Scottish Challenge Cup, so UEFA and FIFA would be fine. Imagine games like Aberdeen v Newport County FC, Glasgow Celtic FC v Manchester Utd, Liverpool FC v Hibernian, Ross County v Holywell Town of North East Wales, Peterhead v West Ham United, Inverness CT v Luton Town, Wolverhampton Wanderers v Motherwell, Glasgow Rangers v Chelsea, and Coventry City v Dundee United. Irish sides could be invited also. Perhaps the North and Republic of Ireland could benefit from this also.

Personally I’m a United fan because my Dad is and the reason he is, is because as he was getting into football some guys moved over the road from him who were United fans, and then he started supporting them in 1975, the year after we got relegated, went to his first game in 1983, before Ferguson came in and bought a season ticket in 1990, before we won our first league under Sir Alex, until 2006 and he’s still been every season since and I went to my first game in 2010 against Liverpool at Old Trafford 2-1, and I’ve been every season since and I last went to the embarrassment of a game at Newcastle away. I know about the history of United, about the Busby Babes and Newton Heath, and obviously the great success of the 90’s so I don’t like to think of myself as a glory supporter because in the 70’s we were shocking and the scousers were ruling the country and getting Ferguson was a massive stroke of luck for us so had Ferguson been sacked in 1990 if it wasn’t for Mark Robbins and we were a mid-table club and would still be a United fan so I don’t see myself as a glory supporter, I don’t know where them people were from that were over the road from my Dad but I’m from York btw.

call it what you like ryan but i love the story of man utd from railway workers to the busby babes munich crash to the signing of george best a young player from the same estate i grew up on incidentally and then going on to win the european cup in 68 then cantona came my childhood hero a man of charisma and leadership an outlaw who fergie believed in the class of 92 domination in the 90s a time when i played my own football and loved to watch and learn from the best that then went onto the most amazing season in football history 99 not to mention moscow kicking chelsea's arse in the biggest game in the english games history united are and will be the bench mark for young talent on these isles and i dont give a fuck what or who ever any other fans think that's why i follow united not to mention my late uncle who followed united all over in the 70's and told me what a great club it was.
