@@kathydoyle1857it is a bit of a dead colour but if you have it as a background colour it comes to life when you add various colours into the room. I kind of regretted getting grey flooring and one wall pale grey but I can use other colours to ring the changes in the room. At the moment I have duck egg and pale pink soft furnishings like throws and cushions and despite the grey background the room is transformed. I’ve also tried burnt orange with the grey and it also looks good. I now much prefer grey in the background to beige.

There is a melancholy in your voice whever you talk about your home. One of the reasons I avidly watch your channel is for videos like this. It grounds me and validates my own feelings towards life and living more simply. I left a career where I was surrounded by people competing to have the best car, clothes, house and possessions, but it left me feeling empty. Sadly this seems to be the majority of people, and I think it takes a lot of courage to live your life by your own ideals. I think this is why you attract friends like TLJ and those that help you wit the van etc. Meaningful and authentic relationships. You're actually a role model in this regard! With regard to your house... it seems like you will eventually move on, despite the memories and emotional warmth in the house. Very understandable in light of how your life is now. My only wish for you is to maximise what you receive for your home. When you eventually get it valued, just ask the various estate agents what they would recomend to increase the value to something like the rest of the properties on your street. I appreciate what others have said about not investing in a house you intend to sell, but there are always counterpoints otherwise no-one would ever become renovators/flippers. If investing some of your inheritance in a simple renovation would enable significantly more money for your next house or to live off, then it would be useful to at least consider it. Whilst a new kitchen may be ripped out, if it costs £4k to add £10k to the value of the house, then who cares about it being ripped out? (Apart from the potential waste). Having said all this, if that is too much of an emotional hurdle, then no-one would blame you if you moved on without doing any of that. Take care, Richard. Be comforted by the knowledge that videos like this DO indeed interest and even help people. Thank you!

You should never spend money on a house you are about to sell. An Estate Agent told me this when we had to sell my father's bungalow in Norfolk. My sister wanted to put a new kitchen in, but he said it would probably end up in a skip. Give it a lick of paint, but that is all.

When I bought my house there was only 5 things that needed replacing: 1/ all the doors 2/ all the wall coverings/plasterwork 3/ all the ceilings(contaminated with ceiling tile glue!) 4/ all the floor coverings 5/all furniture Inc kitchen and bathroom stuff 27 years later, I've replaced the doors (except the original front door which has a missing pain of glass !)

Richard your house reminds me of our old house, it was a prefab put together just after the 2nd World War, we had no heating just a wood burner, no banister, and single glazed windows, and we had woodchip on the wall, I loved the house but quite often I would feel embarrassed having people round. We moved 4 years ago and I really miss the wood burner

Such a much loved, happy house. Tired yes, but homely. All it takes is a decision. A big decision, like moving and starting again somewhere low budget. Or invest tens or thousands in it to make it more comfortable for yourself, or to double its value and move on into something that you really would like to live in.

Have you thought about purchasing a canal boat? I think it would suit you as you can wander up and down the canals or, if you wanted, have a home mooring to make a more permanent place to stay. There are some beautiful boats out there, and I have seen some private moorings that have enough of a garden area to make you self sufficient in vegetables and fruit if that is what you wanted.

Hope you find your new home with land , growing what we eat is the future . I had a house 🏠 almost identical, with 6 kids , I was mostly a single parent , the council replaced the broken boiler , the windows and exterior doors , 2 years later I was advised to sell , I had been there 18 years . When I sold I had to pay back to the council all the work that was done . It was a shock as I didn’t know how expensive it was and was encouraged to replace my lovely stained glass front door for a plastic one .

I can completely relate to your situation. I was brought up in a house which never had a fitted kitchen until the day my mother died 12 years ago. I also didn’t know what it was like to have radiators until I was about 12 years old. We never had double glazing and we used to get ice on the inside of the windows. You are lucky that you still have your health and strength. What a shame you are thinking of selling your home. Have you considered getting a part-time job a couple of days a week? This would still give you lots of time to pursue your love of making videos. Just a suggestion. I am sure we would all like to hear your thoughts on that. You would then be able to save up to get many of the most important jobs done and thus achieve a better selling price for the house when you decide to go. I do hope you are alright.

I feel at home in your house! Ours is over 100 years old- no central heating/ double glazing. The sink was put in the kitchen in 1957. Open fires in 4 rooms but only lit in one or occasionally 2. Outside privy although also have small bathroom etc. Big difference though is that we have a good sized garden.

Love old houses that have not been made over into something that does not suit their spirit. You said it was a kindly house...I like that. Our home is 200 yrs old and not modernized beyone a few ‘essentials’ (washer, refrigerator) and las been likened to “stepping into the pages of a favorite book”. We have learned to live with her and we accept who we are as co-inhabitants. 😊 I have a lot of catching up of older videos, but hoping you have chosen to stay. Susan

your house is a exact copy of my grandparents house that I stayed in when I visited the UK in 1973 ( 37 West Street Shoreham by Sea) .....I can still smell the linoleum floors and the pariffin heater

I think your kitchen is really lovely. I've been trying to talk my husband into removing our standard built in cabinets, etc. to create an unfitted kitchen with antique cupboards and stand alone cabinets. I guess I prefer uniqueness to the cookie cutter rooms. :)

It has been a happy home in the past I'm sure. It seems you are concerned about what to do about your situation now. As you say you are still fit and healthy and Its a long way off but I think you need to be considering where you want to be at retirement age ( although I'm sure you'll not want to 'retire' !!)You'll want a warm dry place to live as you get older - sorry but I'm putting my sensible head on for this ha ha . Maybe use your father''s money to either do it up or move on sooner rather than later ???? Another brave video Richard.

LOVE - LOVE - LOVE your stove! (Or do you call it a 'cooker'? -- I'm in the U.S.). But I do appreciate your desire to have a kitchen in which to receive visitors...I also entertain in my kitchen and am looking forward to taking out a wall and expanding into the separate dining area, so I have more space for a larger table. I also have a junk room -- and a junk garage -- and even my family room is crowded with so much stuff...I might be a contender for feature on one of those 'hoarder shows". My grandson moved out and also left me with bunch of 'bits', too. I've been addressing that on an item by item basis and should have it cleared eventually. Many of us are in exactly the same situation. What was it John Lennon said? "Life is what happens while you're making other plans." Thank you for sharing!

You might have been in your house for as long as I have been in mine ! I moved in 1988 and have done very little over that time, but, as you say, it is home and comfortable - that's all that matters !!!

Hi Richard, I can wholheartedly identify with your video as we have lived in our first and only cottage since 1981, so many memories of bringing up the children etc and everything is second hand or antique, my entire free standing kitchen was constructed from an old pine school cupboard with the addition of an old Welsh Dresser and we have wood chip on the stairway as too difficult to strip. But it's comfortable and homely and the thought of moving with all our accumulated stuff way too dauntin. I wouldn't have a spanking new-build with a sleek modern kitchen if you paid me. You stick to the important things in life! Love all your videos but seem to have missed this one.

I hear you on the emotional attachment to the house. It has been your home and there are obviously some wonderful memories there. We can all associate ourselves with those feelings yet those beautiful memories will remain with you no matter where you go. I can attest to that. Yet I also hear the overwhelming concerns of the maintenance on the aging house and I would agree with your thoughts that it is time to move on to commence a new chapter, a new book even in your life. Your friends, as we like to think of ourselves :) want to see that spark return and lockdown has dimmed all our sparks a little. I think like @Linda Kane that you need to move sooner than later. Make that 5 year plan a 1 year plan! Time to move on and move forward. Again, I speak from experience and whilst I may not be as financial as I could of been living the 'norm', I am much richer for the life's experience in taking those chances.

I went out to work all the way through Convid, but only work 12 days per month so on my days off I never stayed home and went out three times per day with my dogs. I never stopped visiting my elderly parents, and I certainly never had that track and trace crap on my phone. When I came back from Tenerife in January I never sent my 70 quid PCR test away, went about my life as usual and never head another thing. One big shit show. I love your home, it looks like it has loads of character.

Hey Richard. In fact a very interesting video. I mean this with the greatest of respect but you should consider moving sooner rather than later. Otherwise you never will. Again it’s best to whilst you’re still fit to enjoy a bit of land that you can tend to if purchased. If you spend money doing the place up someone will still come along & rip it all out so I wouldn’t worry. It is what it is as they say.

Honestly Richard , shifting and starting another life elsewhere is such a huge undertaking, why not do a big sort out ,then maybe do some small Renovation s to the important rooms in the house.
