For safety and precision, I’d use a hemostat to feed mealworms to the toucans. They can be gotten for under $10 on Amazon. Heck, if Brock has a P.O. Box, I’d happily mail him mine for free.

Reptile owner here: dubia roaches are a better source of protien per bug. They don't stink, are easy to breed, and tend to die off if they escape because they don't eat the same things normal roaches do. They should save you quite a bit of money if you decide to breed them yourself! How this translates to birds, I'm not entirely sure, but that's the way it works with reptiles.

Such chaos lol. Would you be tempted to 'farm's some mealworm yourself? I've heard its pretty easy, the main thing being you want to keep the adult beetles out of the world you'll feed the birds with. I can't remember why though.

i haven't been back in a bit, amazing to see her doing so well!
another good insect is horn worms, but only use ones that are raised as pet food since the wild ones can toxic due to their diet. Silk worms are also really good, an excellent source of calcium too. Waxworms are just generally fatty and i've seen small song birds basically just pass them straight through without digesting them so i'm not sure how good they are. Bee larvae are actually really good IF you can find them (maybe ask a bee keeper for drone larvae), but they will generally be frozen dead. Crickets are also good. I've feed all those to highly endangered birds with few issues (aside from the waxworms which caused impaction in hatchlings!). The bird species were the Maui Parrotbill and Kaui Thrush.

My biggest concern with meal worms were that they were rather fatty and I noticed a substantial weight gain in my frogs. Granted we're comparing amphibians to birds here, but still
@Everythingbagel1964 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they are really fatty... I’ve heard Dubia roaches are a pretty good food for frogs and lizards, so if you haven’t tried them yet they might be a good choice! ( although they are illegal in some places like Florida...)

mealworms are beetle larvae. they're grown in dry wheat bran with slices of potatoes for water. there's very little risk of bacteria since they are raised in a dry environment.

i would have suggested looking into freezedried mealworms for the bacterial worry but I'm not firmillar with what type of pathogens can survive the freeze drying process. it probably kills most types of bacteria but may miss encapsulated bacteria and fungal spores. also suspect that rehydrateing freezedried mealworms would make mealworm porridge of them. not sure if they could eat them dry and suspect that porridge would be a mess waiting to happen.

If you were thinking of giving them mealworms long term, it might be worth it to look into making your own mealworm farm since it should be cheaper in the long run. There are lots of DIY tutorials online and you can pretty much make it as big or as small as you'd need it to be. You could probably also do the same with superworms if you wanted :33

My gerbils loved food moths and their larvae. When I had a food moth infestation in some flour, I took the insects and gave them to my gerbils. They liked it so much that one of them actually licked my finger after eating the worm. A mouse tonge is so tiny! :D
