The thing is that in musicals there's a difference between diegetic and nondiegetic music, diegetic music is music the characters can hear and nondiegetic is when they cannot. The problem is that this movie can't make up its mind with which it wants, sometimes the characters acknowledge there's a musical number and sometimes they don't. They have to pick one and stick to it to not confuse the audience.

I think the issue with the movie is around the cast, the actress that plays Cady does not fill the Lindsay Lohan shoes, she doesn't feel like a leading lady. The girl that plays Gretchen does not feel like someone that could be a popular person in high school irl, Aaron is not cute at all, the point of Aaron is that you understand Cady's crush and Regina's inability to let him go, even if she likes someone else. Avantika as Karen, I don't know, she plays her like she had a brain injury, the girl is beyond dumb.

See, as a fan of the broadway musical, I agree that this movie was a little odd. But not because of the fact that they were signing, cuz it was a musical. But like, the filming during revenge party? Wtf was that. And why’d they change all the songs, and add new ones. It could’ve been a lot better. I know they adapted it to appeal to a broader audience, but it’s receiving worse reviews than it would have if they had just stuck more closely to the original.

Why are people saying "Oh wow, a musical have music"? I mean, the music wasn't the issue for me... it's the writing and delivery of most things, it kinda lacks that film creativity the 1st one had... The actors and music are fine, but the execution was just my issue... It just doesn't... idk... hit? at least for me. Don't get me wrong, Regina's intro gave me chills for that 1st part... but yeah... the rest? idk idk, the 1st one just had an "OHHH" while this had a "uhmm, meh" feeling. The writing and direction in the 1st is just, idk, kinda better. Just my thoughts though.
