Elle’s mother is the best character. She at least had the good sense to die in the first five minutes so she didn’t have to be in this trash fire of a movie.

Too bad the dad stayed, he is my favourite character y'know, he knew how trash the movie will be but he stayed to watch over his daughter and son And you see he is suffering for it, it really isn't fun and he isn't going to fake it like the others, but he is doing it for his kids, a true inspiration for all men, fathers and humanity in general Hope we see a movie about him

Not really when you realize it was probably just because he thought it'd be gross for his brother and best friend to date. They were kids when they made the rules and he didn't act like the rule was made out of concern. He said that he's never talk to her again, you wouldn't say that if you were actually concern about your friend being in a toxic situation. Every character in the movie sucked honestly except elle but she was extremely flat for a main character.

Aside from Noah, Lee is also extremely creepy. They could have made his disapproval of Noah dating Elle be about caring about her well-being because he knows his brother is an abusive asshole. The scene where Noah slams his fist on the car and yells at Elle to get in always made me feel sick to my gut. And the fact that the movie just disregarded it and Elle got in the car anyway just to fuck him an hour later was so incredibly concerning to me. In a single scene, this film has taught young girls that if an angry guy who has just been in a physical altercation yells at you to get in his car, you just should, cuz he probably just wants to take you to a romantic secret place and have sex with you. It’s such a dangerous message and I was so disappointed that the opportunity to teach young people how to spot red flags was THERE and they chose to do the exact opposite. And combined with Noah’s behaviour throughout the rest of the movie and the general response to his character from fans, it paints a pretty scary fucking story

Another big issue is that, just from what I've seen here and Cinema Therapy, it's implied that Noah has likely hurt Lee in the past Like, since they were kids, Lee was adamant about keeping Elle out of a relationship with him, probably because it would be weird, and because he's proven to be extremely violent and controlling for no reason. He sees Elle injured and immediately assumes that he did it and manipulate her to lie for him Like- doesn't it feel like that may have happened when they were kids? Noah hurt Lee and convinced him to lie to their parents about it. To everyone. And now Lee has to watch him date his best friend, anxious that it's gonna go bad

This movie would've been better if it had turned out that Lee explicitly wanted to keep El from his brother because his brother is an abusive maniac and he was just worried about her, and maybe they could tie in her mom dying to her being reckless and impulsive so at first she's into how *wild* Noah is, and after she's convinced he's bad for her, she throws herself at Lee, but Lee doesn't like her that way and only sees her as a friend, and the movie ends with El going to therapy and Noah, I don't know, dying or going to jail.

@jaymercer4692

Definitely better but I'm not sure about Elle throwing herself at Lee and going to therapy. I think that would make her character quite empty and promote the idea that there's something wrong with someone mentally if they end up in an abusive relationship. That is sometimes true but also it comes down to the manipulation of an abuser. Perhaps the film could have took a dark turn and depict domestic abuse quite graphically but accurately. I'm not certain what would be best in terms of Lee's role but I agree Noah facing the consequences of his actions and Elle learning would be a much better outcome. Dying seems to say that death is an appropriate form of justice rather than reformation or that death from a perpetrator can help a victim move on, which I don't think is a helpful or productive message but prison seems fitting. I suppose the issue is that it's a difficult story to write and unless it is genuinely well done, it wont sell. To accurately but also sensitively depict real world crimes is a very fine line and requires not just excellent writers but also very good actors. No matter how crap this is, I imagine it would do well enough to make some money from an American audience.

Noah is constantly acting extremely abusive and the movie just ignores that for the most part.

Right, they make it seem like we're supposed to believe he would hurt anyone but her, "oh look he's so protective!" When in reality, a man with a violent streak like Noah's isn't going to be like "oh but this person is off limits." He clearly has serious anger management issues, and a relationship won't just make that go away. Lee didn't just not want El dating his brother because it'd be weird, he didn't want her dating someone so violent and toxic.

This movie reads like a story about a touch-starved teenage girl who doesn’t have a positive female figure in her life to help her understand how to live life as a woman, and a pair of abusive codependent brothers who can’t adjust to life outside of their home because their absent parents essentially forced them to care for and punish eachother to compensate for the lack of ANY adult role models in their lives. Noah is an abuser, but he’s also a victim. Lee is a victim, but he’s also an abuser. Elle is just a victim who’s being forced to *believe* she’s an abuser.

I get the "I see you as a little sister thing" and having them kiss later was supposed to be a 'showing not telling' thing where he SAYS how he feels but actually reveals his true feelings later, but I'll be damed if it isn't gross as hell. He could have said: "You're my little brother's best friend, I kind of feel this obligation to protect you." Which would display the fact that he apparently doesn't view their relationship as close and only by association with his brother and they could do the whole showing not telling thing later as they kiss, WITHOUT that weird little sister stuff

I watched this when it came out (I was like 13) and at age 17 seeing this again I notice the huge red flags Noah gives off from how violent he is to the point where lee felt the needed to create a rule not to date his brother. They tried so hard to make lee the bad guy because he didn’t approve of her relationship with Noah, he’s a good bestfriend trying his hardest to protect his best friends safety from his violent and abusive older brother, and the fact the lee immediately assumed the cut Elle got was from Noah should’ve been a huge red flag to Elle regarding Noah. Dude, the trope of violent guy and the girl who calms him down was always kinda off with me. It seems to romanise abusive relationships. Like, in regular abusive relationships, victims don’t think of themselves as victims, but as good people helping out a troubled individual aka their abuser. They think themselves as the only ones who can help their abuser and become trapped in their relationship. The victim can’t leave easily because the abuser would threaten their own life or the lives of others if the victim leaves. The victim thinks they still have power because they can calm the abuser down, but really they’re just following the cycle of abuse. Get abused -> Get apology -> Forgive them -> repeat The trope kinda romanize this concept, but ignoring the abuse part.

I watched this movie when it first came out. I was still young then and I'm ashamed to say that I liked it and was obsessed with it for so long. How could I have been so blind? I even liked the 2nd movie when it came out. Mostly because of Marco but I now hate him too. Anyway by the time I became an adult, I had watched a whole bunch of reactions on KZbin just like this one completely slandering this movie and that's how I came to finally understand. This movie is terrible and sends so many bad messages to young girls. Messages that I took to heart, still being the young girl that I was and I ran with them. I had already experienced abusive relationships before I saw this movie but this movie didn't exactly help me with learning my lesson about trusting and dating the wrong men. I think it made it worse. Cause again this movie reinforced in my little mind that this stuff was normal. By the time the 3rd one came out not too long ago I was an adult and had finally learned my lesson. My boyfriend is not into romance movies like I am so he never saw any of the Kissing Booths. He never even heard of them despite having Netflix until I told him. I didn't give him any details and watched the first one with him to make him see. Immediately he thought the same as everyone else. Cringey, cliche and bad messages for young girls about relationships AND friendships. Then I made him suffer through the 2nd one with me that was a sh*tshow. Rachel was the best part of it even though she was stupid for being with someone like Lee. Then we both suffered through the 3rd one together when it first came out and we did it out of sheer curiosity. "How could they possibly make this story any worse?" Uggggggggggggh. Honestly he and I are kind of on the fence about whether or not we should let our children watch these movies, especially our daughters. I definitely intend to warn my children about this movie and tell them to not think that any of what is going on in the movie is a good thing. Hopefully they listen to me. And honestly hopefully we can all watch together so we can talk afterwards.

Interestingly, I feel as though I've read three hundred Wattpad stories (when I was like 11-13) about this exact trope. I never realized how toxic it was. I understand where Lee's 9th rule came from, he doesn't want his brother and best friend to get together, potentially break up and make things awkward. Noah is compulsive and very aggressive, I can't help but feel as though he and Lee need some family therapy. Lee clearly doesn't trust his brother, and I can understand why he wouldn't. I don't trust him either lol. Elle was pretty awful in this movie, and she didn't take into account what her actions would actually do--like building a wedge between two brothers.

So many romance movies glorify and romanticise abuse, but this one stands out to me. You can see how violent Noah is super early on and they just excuse it. Noah is an obvious abuser and yet she gets with him anyway and that's supposed to be a happy ending? Wtf.

It's horrible too how Noah's anger is treated as completely normal and romantic. The fact that Lee saw a cut on her face, IMMEDIATELY assumed Noah had done it, and that was a COMPLETELY BELIEVABLE assumption from what we'd seen of Noah implies that maybe he wanted to keep her away from Noah because he genuinely believed Noah could/would be physically violent towards his partner. I know these movies don't go deep, but it just feels so irresponsible to release this to teens as a romance when it reads more like a slow burn horror movie with Elle as a future victim.

Unless it shows the consequences of going for "bad boys" (psychopaths and narcissists) in an honest and realistic way, which is to say that they will inevitably turn their violence and sadism towards you. Teens can handle tough subject matter. But of course I agree, in a fluffy romcom it's a baffling choice. In fact, the vast majority of teens would see this movie for what it is: an ethically confused, unfunny and pathetic mess, so I don't think it's going to do that much harm but still. What a wretched piece of storytelling.

I almost lost it at the John Wilkes Booth joke. Fairplay man. But holy shit how is Noah not setting off red flags? Quickly resorts to violence with his temper, is manipulative to the point of controlling who she can be with before they're even romantically involved. If the narrative treated it like that this isn't a good thing, it'd be more understandable because people do ignore red flags sometimes or not see them but this is considered a bad thing, but it seems the narrative voice here is "nope, it's romantic, it's true love". The best friend should have remained strict about the rule, but not because it's a rule and he's butthurt, but because his brother is a massive red flag & best friends look out for each other

I said this in another Kissing Booth review: Lee immediately thinking that Elle's cut came from his brother hitting her is a terrible sign. That his first thought is that his brother would do that to a girl he has known for most of his life shows how Lee views his brother's violent tendencies. If your bff thinks his own brother is capable of doing (and likely to do) that, take that as an important warning about the guy you are romancing
@thekitkatlizard8661
@thekitkatlizard8661 Жыл бұрын
Also, immediately after Lee accuses him, Noah starts BOLTING at his brother who is 4 years younger than him and far, far weaker at him to beat him up, like wtf. Noah beating up creeps is one thing, but him beating up your best friend for being kinda unreasonable? Hell no Lee does end up getting in the first punch, but again, Noah is older and could most likely snap Lee like a twig, he's supposed to be the bigger person and act more maturely and be more responsible, but instead he has even less self-control than Lee does. Lee knows Noah is a womaniser and so doesn't want Elle to date him for that reason, also bc it would be weird. Lee ALSO doesn't like Noah because he's a violent jerk, towards him and just in general, but is still somehow worshipped while Lee is considered a loser, so having his best friend date his brother would really quite suck. And then when walking in he does sound kind of shocked, like he'd never think Noah would go as far as to hit a girl (esp a soft, passive one like Elle), but also isn't putting it above him considering his previous ill behaviour

@@thekitkatlizard8661 Agreed. Not to mention that with how Noah has acted throughout this movie, I don’t find it at all unreasonable that Lee would immediately believe without question that Noah is abusing Elle. Also, in my opinion at least, that should’ve probably shown Elle that dating Noah is an absolutely horrid decision. It’s one thing that outside sources have been giving her the signs to press the eject button on this relationship, but one that specifically came from her bestie since she was a child? How is punching the lights out of your brother going to prove you didn't hit his friend? What was he expecting the reaction to be. And if it is that easy for him to snap and attack his brother, there nothing stopping him from attacking the fragile girl who is less than half his size. She definitely needs therapy and a restraining order. He needs significantly more therapy and anger management classes

Okay get off your high horse for a second and just think about this. Ab*se of any kind, ESPECIALLY hitting a woman is a very big accusation to just throw around. Just like s*xual allegations, that sort of thing can ruin someone's life. Look around you. It's happening to men all over the world and look at what's happening to them. Their lives are being ruined because of something they didn't do. So with that being said, if someone looked you in the face and outright accused you of something like that, don't pretend that you wouldn't be angry. Even a man who's nothing like Noah, doesn't have anger issues and has no history of fighting or violent, would probably be furious in that moment and be tempted to do something stupid. We're all still animals after all. We all have a fighting instinct, some of us are just better at repressing it than others. Someone throwing that kind of a jab at you would probably make that side come out.
