FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tina Fey from Saturday Night Live wrote and appears in this comedy about the alternately funny and terrifying pecking order among teenage girls. Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) is a 15-year-old girl who has spent most of her life in Africa, where she was home-schooled by her zoologist parents. When her family relocates to the United States, Cady finds herself attending a high school in suburban Illinois, where she gets a crash course in the various sub-strata of the student body: the jocks, the cheerleaders, the stoners, the "cool" kids, and so on. Much to her surprise, Cady finds herself embraced by a clique of rich and popular girls known to outsiders as "the Plastics," led by Regina George (Rachel McAdams), Gretchen Weiners (Lacey Chabert), and Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried). While Cady is grateful for her new friends, it doesn't take long for her to realize how manipulative they can be, and she soon discovers she's violated an unwritten law when she goes out on a date with Aaron (Jonathan Bennett), who is charming, good looking...and Regina's former boyfriend. It isn't long before Regina and her pals are on the warpath, and Cady must face a level of vengeful behavior for which years in the jungle never prepared her. The saddest part for me was that in this scene Regina was genuinely insecure about her body and those sweatpants were the only thing she could wear. The second saddest part is when she looked to cady for help. You can notice that Gretchen and Karen stand against Regina in this scene. This is probably because of Cady. When Karen was being called stupid by Regina, Cady was the one who talked to her. When Gretchen was being needing to talk with someone about how mean Regina is, Cady was there for her. It feels kinda good to see them both standing for themselves in this scene

I really like this scene because it shows us how smart Regina actually is. When the girls mention that wearing sweatpants on Monday is against the rules Regina replies saying the rules aren’t real. This shows how manipulative Regina is by making the rest of the girls believe they can’t break any rule. Regina perfectly knows it’s just a child’s game that’s why she does not give a f*ck.

I love the subtle symbolism of this scene. Regina is sitting all slouched over, looking sick and weak, her hair disheveled, gaining weight, and lacking her original confidence. Cady, on the other hand, is sitting up straight, looking fresh, her clothes are new, her hair looks great, and she's got a confident demeanor and posture. If any new kid were to walk into the cafeteria, they would assume Cady is the leader of The Plastics, not Regina. Perfect little touch by the writers and producers.

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Rachel McAdams was nominated for some sort of award for this movie. yes, I know it’s a teen movie, but I feel like she plays this character so well, and it’s so hard to believe that she’s an actress playing Regina. This scene, the first cafeteria scene, the Janis monologue, and even the burn book distribution scene are such great scenes not even from a comedic standpoint, but a realistic standpoint.

Tbh Mean Girls is underrated in the sense that people write it off as just a pop-culture piece or a teen/girly movie, and don't really give it serious praise. There's so many layers within the acting, costume design, writing, themes and great cinematography. I feel like people only really give film serious praise if it's *obviously* artsy like Bladerunner (both original and sequel), Interstellar, or Joker.

Kids these days probably have a hard time imagining having to navigate high school without all that, but I for one am Very glad I graduated high school without dealing with Tiktok or Twitter.

1. I think it's part writing choice, to not take the focus away from the main characters and their progression. If everyone had stared, it might've added an element that wasn't needed 2.
