Miranda saw a lot of herself in Andy and wanted to see what she would do in regards of making the choice to either climb the ladder or staying true to her values by not sabotaging Emily, who was already excited about going because she was already in line to go before Andy was hired. Emily is the most realistic character in the movie. She really deserved to go to Paris, She was hardworking, so dedicated at work, and a brilliant person who sure deserved a big future with big dreams. I didn't think it was fair when Miranda chose Andy, not Emily. She so wanted to be in the fashion world, I believe Emily was so strict with Andy because she knew how difficult this life was...
@BearAndBunny0605

As sad as it is that Emily was sabotaged in the film, it actually happens in reality. People are faced with the choice of either stab their coworker(s) in the back for a job opportunity they are more qualified for in the first place before they came along or stick to their values by not slitting their throat, so to speak. Some do it on purpose, others are given the decision by a supervisor where they have to choose for themselves. But it really does happen in the workplace environment. 💔

It's because her character has a lot of vulnerability on display throughout. She is bitchy but the reason for that is shown to be because of how insecure and desperate she is to secure her place in the fashion world. And her insecurity and desperation is justified because she is at the mercy of Miranda's whims and the fashion world's impossible beauty standards.

I have been in Emily's position and I tell you it is crushing to see someone who talked smack about your industry do good in it and still think it's below them and not give it the esteem it deserves. I love how we reevaluated her character lately, from the comic relief of the mean girl to a great worker who's done everything possible to achieve her dream to work with her idol. She had to live abroad, probably having no relatives in New York and not enough free time to make friends outside of colleagues like Serena who have their own life (hence the cold answer when Andy asks her about her plans for the weekend) and you can see she never sabotaged anyone during her career from the way she takes the announcement of Andy going to Paris instead of her, she considers it to be a betrayal from her colleague.

she's a good worker but she doesn't understand the concept of work smarter not harder. All those hours and she's never impressed Miranda. This is a creative industry and she's just a drone. Perhaps if she'd been like Andy and told Miranda 'no' a few times, then Miranda might have thought "hey, this is a girl who knows her worth." Or if she'd told Miranda of her own career objectives or personal interests then Miranda might think "this girl has many dimensions to her". Perhaps if she could show Miranda she could get people to do things without bullying people thn Miranda might see she has the people skills to go further. Emily may put in more hours but Andrea is more talented and in life, talent counts. Really Emily should be in another job.

I agree with this and for the other comment I also agree too. I had been both an Emily and an Andy and everything you guys said are valid. I just dislike Andy more than I did Emily and Miranda because she entered this field with a patronizing attitude and when she began doing better that's only when it mattered

What I love about her character is the fact that she always taught Andy everything so as not to mess up anything. Her love for her job and the magazine was greater than anything and that's also why she never even thought about sabotaging Andy.

Emily was mean but she was VERY thorough. She gave Andy everything she needed to succeed at her job. She never lied, never left anything out. Yes it was slightly because Andy doing bad would impact her relationship with Miranda. She came to respect Andy and even after she didn’t go to Paris, realised how good of a worker and a person Andy was to her.

@@mayaamis Yeah, and that's how in the long-term, Miranda will lose Emily. Sure, there are some grey choices and she might have the loyalty of some designers and models that she turned into the icons they are now, but the cogs like Nigel and Emily are also important. Miranda might coast by on working in an oversaturated market, but eventually even Emily might one day decide her paltry pay and "getting to work with her idol" is just not worth it.

Personal assistants in my area, especially for CEOs and big wigs, have a starting salary of $75k. The work is hard and you never get days off, but the benefits are usually insane. I had a friend who’s a PA, she made 6 figures, she’s phenomenal at her job, she had connections out the wazoo, and her boss gave her a brand new luxury car every few years so she could run errands for him and the company. She loved her job, but she’d be the first to admit it’s insanely stressful

I love her character. And I love that cinema youtube reevaluated her character lately, she was portrayed as a funny antagonist that is supposed to be all down-to-earth Andy is not. But lately she has been acknowledged as hard-working and passionate, she left her country and relatives to work with her idol and she knows that she is lucky to be here and works hard to be worthy of it. When Andy arrives she sees someone who is just here by luck and doesn't care about the industry but anyway she never tries to sabotage her. At first watch she can also be seen as judgmental (when she criticizes Andy's outfits) but in fact she's not at all, she just knows fashion and Andy does have a horrid style (or no style "no, no, it was not a question") for someone working in a fashion magazine. PS : Nate is the real villain.
