I knew a french couple that lived in Villefranche-sur-Mer, their apartment was down by the marina and overlooked the bay. The first time I went there, some 28 years ago, I noticed they didn't have a tele, when I asked why, my friend just pointed across the open door to the terrace and that fantastic and breathtaking view and said, with this who needs one. We spend many memorable evenings on that terrace, eating and drinking and watching the sunset, sadly they have now passed away.

Thanks for sharing, It would be grand to have a video to share of that moment today. Your friends I would guess to be more aware and enlightened than most, and your sharing of their memory reminds me of about that time long ago when I returned to Puerto Vallarta Mexico after being away for about 8 months, and my first evening out, I noticed the the streets oddly quiet and very few local families out having fun and enjoying a dinner together but at home glued to TV screens and family arguments in homes and a couple of fights on the streets. As I passed by the Malicon, people were shouting for help from the water's edge of the beach. I hurried to the where the surf was breaking and a mother was crying for help as her son, who was jilted at a wedding had tried to drown himself in the rough surf, and managed to retrieve the young man and do some rescue breathing on shore. Exhausted and soaked I continued on to home of an Italian couple who had a moved to Mexico I was going to visit, and asked that people seemed very different, less friendly and more troubled. My friends said: "Oh yea, about the time you left we got cable TV, where before we only had two channels, and almost immediately the culture changed. One of my friends was a clinical psychologist and said that how TV changed the community would have made for a good psychological study.

Thank you for this. I remember walking from Nice to Villefranche one night & then hooking my belt around one of the boat tugs attached to the wall with the other part around my neck at about 4/5am. I thought at the time, what a wonderful place to end my life. As it turns out, my belt was cheap & snapped just before what could have happened. I fell on my arse. But I ended up laughing at the madness of the situation & a few hours later I was having breakfast in Monaco. Smoked Salmon & scrambled eggs with a bottle of Champagne. It made me re-think life massively. I'll never forget that beach. 12 years later...

Nice presentation! I would add: 1. Go to an open air movie in the evening at the Citadelle 2. Wear walking shoes if you take the trail to the Fort of Mont Alban (you can exercise along the way, there is a parkour for the sporty ones) 3. In the afternoon you can find shadow from the protecting wall on the pebble beach at the Darse but when it gets all in the shadow you can move to the sandy beach across the bay.

WOW! Tim you have out done yourself this time....beautiful, informative video! I must say, you are making it very tempting to do Villefranche, but in off season, naturellement! I could soooo live there. In my heart I have always been quite French, as I must be channeling all my French ancestors! The food, the wine the beaches, the philosophy of life...and I Iive for picnics in the summer...right up my ? (what is it you always say?...I can never hear it well with your Yorkshire accent, lol)...Those villa's...wow...speaking of Yorkshire accents, I thought you were saying...' belly pot' villa's, referring to the fact that they sort of look look like the front of a pot belly stove, but I soon realized you were saying 'belle epoch!'...ha ha ha...Anywho, I adored the idea of secret swimming. Oh oh oh...again, right up my ?...I have always loved the idea of private swimming in some far off secluded spot where the only thing that you might scare is the fish ...hee hee....if you get my drift...

Well done. I know that going dark hasn't been in your playbook, but since you are doing these local native items, I would love to see a well researched and well delivered piece on the slave trade of King Leopold in the area. I had an office once in the Darse and on the floor were large loops of metal - I was told that all the buildings to the west of the Darse (doing marine studies) have these on all the floors, as this is were boatloads of people from Leopold's horror shows were brought. Now the big cannons are gone but the names of the streets reference Leopold. It would be excellent if you could find people to speak to this history before it is gone.

Tim, how would you compare living in Villefranche to Beaulieu in general terms?
@MeandMonAmi9 ай бұрын
Very different I’d say, not least underfoot..

You’re info was great but could you please turn the camera around permanently so that we can see everything?

If the authorities have seized Nellcote could it not be opened up to the public for tours? It would be very popular I’m sure. I would make a special trip just to see inside 😁
@MeandMonAmiАй бұрын
Sadly I fear the seizing isnt quite what it seems. According to a piece I read the other week it just means the owner cannot sell it but can still use it!

You're getting quite good at these Tim. I take it this wasn't filmed in February though. ( How do you spend twenty years there without getting fluent in French? )

It was 100% filmed in February!

@@MeandMonAmi Walking around in a shirt and with this sky?? Do you want to make us Northerners jealous? It has been another friendly winter here, but i guess it will be 1.5 more months until i can take the thick lining out of my jacket...
