It would make it better at least for me, if you also have the pinyin word next to each English word. Thank you.

Amazing once again Chris. I'm now going through your "Break Through Pronunciation" videos, and the knowledge from these past two videos is already paying off when I read the characters. Simply amazing. Also, those pronunciation videos are extremely helpful as well. It helped clear up some confusion I had with some letters. Also, I hope you don't mind, but I have a few questions I'd like to ask: When do you think is a good point to begin listening to podcasts and such to expand hearing ability? I'm doing that now, but I feel like my lack in the knowledge of characters is holding me back. If I had to estimate I'd say I know about 220-230 characters. I'm still learning the common 500 (I learn about 15 words a day and practice everyday at various times), but I feel like I should wait to listen to podcasts until my character knowledge is greater. Also, in terms of the pronunciation of some words, is there really a "right" way to say them? For example, 人 can be pronounced as "ren" like the 'r' in "rain," or "ren" with the 'sgh' in "Asia" (I don't how to write that sound correctly in English). Is it just a dialect thing, or should some words be pronounced certain ways? Like 是, I've heard it pronounced as "she" and "shir." are both correct? *EDIT:* I've watched all of your Break Through Pronunciation videos by this point and I still feel like some natives sound different from the rest. I've learned that there are dialects, but I want to know if there is a set way these letters should sound. I position my tongue correctly, but I'm always unsure.

+Jeoffrey Robinson Hi Joeffrey, thanks for watching so many of my videos, glad you're enjoying them. You can listen to podcasts as soon as you can find ones where you can understand around 60-70%, for example Slow Chinese or Chinesepod. There are slight differences in accent and the way people pronounce things, but I always try to teach the most standard pronunciation. For 是, it should definitely be 'shir'. Bear in mind that not everybody pronounces things accurately!! There is a set way things should sound. It's the standard Mandarin used in radio and TV broadcasts.

Fluent in Mandarin I have been listening to Slow Chinese actually. It's still pretty difficult, but I'm sure as I learn more characters and continue listening, it'll get easier quick. And it's very refreshing to hear that there is a set way that things should sound. The dialects always made me feel as if I was saying things wrong. Thanks for responding, Chris! It really helps me out. :D

I’ve spent about 100,000 hours studying English humor and Western culture. My native language is Chinese. I’m teaching Chinese language in jokes and pictures. It makes learning Chinese funny and much easier. Laughter can help us reduce tensions.

So unfair that you didn’t include phonetic in with characters. This way I can only complete understand the main radical but not the example words.
