Happens to me too - then I must make an association immediately - like for Ni3 meaning 'you' (你)"Starts with standing man" and I say, "a PERSON STANDING outside wants to talk to YOU (keyword)" That helps get me started. Association jump starts everything I do - they are in Skritter as ShuoShuo points out - Mandarin Blueprint is all about association. Without association your doomed to a life of rote, drilling (I do those too) and constant forgetting... with association, at least there's a chance...a hope...and when it works you have a nice little victory for yourself... Try this: Learn a new character. Let your brain forget it. Re-learn it once you find it again. Then let your brain re-forget it. Then re-learn it. Then see how your amazing brain just can't forget it any longer. I call it "active-passive brain digestion". Let your memory "digest" every new character at its own pace, the more you forget and bring back once needed, the better you will interiorise new words and concepts. Results guaranteed.

I started learning to speak the basics, when I lived in China. Then I discovered a book explaining all 部首 radicals. It’s from Edoardo Fazzioli and exists in many languages. I also made up flash cards from the book as well checking on Wikipedia „227 Chinese radicals“ As there you find all different versions too. Like river chuān 巛 also can be 川, or shì worship can be 示 as well as 礻. It’s important to know. Since I know the radicals, remembering characters is much easier for me: Like the word 想 xiǎng , to miss, to think of.. for me now consists of mù 木 tree, mù 目 eye and xīn 心 heart ❤️ Much easier now 😃 Then there is the page characterpop to pop down characters to their radicals- but it’s not perfectly complete and some mistakes there... but still ok
@sasino
@sasino 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, tbh, I think that's the only real way you can remember them, there's no way anyone could write a 20-stroke character by memorizing all the individual strokes, without prior knowledge of its components/radicals

Vrai, that's how chinese learn chinese when they are young. Even as native speakers, they also spend years to learn how to write 汉字. 部首 logically relate with how 汉字 were invented and developed.

At 4:30ish, when you are breaking down the character for 腿 (leg), you state that the radical on the left is for 'body part'...it looks exactly like the character for month, to me--Yuè 月...if what you say is correct (and I don't doubt you), this is why I find learning Chinese characters so difficult...many characters look sooo similar 😩

Recognition of characters are always easy. To write Chinese with an input system is easy, because Chinese characters appear as an option and you can regognize very quickly if you know them. More difficult is, to write something without suggestions. Only from remembering! In this text, I wrote some English words intentionally not correctly, because English is not my native language and sometimes I make some mistakes in the word order. A difficult word for me in English is "recognize", which I often write it as "regognize"! When I read this word, I can see how, how it would be written! But now, without reading it from somewere, I write it wrong like "regognize" instead of "recognize", ore "somewere" instead of "somewhere" ! The same situation appears with Chinese Characters! Some Chinese Characters I have seen and read them very often, but my brain always strikes to write them correctly! Also the English word "recognize" I have read it very often! But to write it correctly let me struggles! Another difficult Chinese expression for me is 喜欢, where my brain often makes troubles! With an input-system it is not a problem to write 喜. I recognize it immediatly (immediately - the silent "e" in English let me also struggles very often!) ! I know the radicals but in 喜 it makes no sense for me! Writing 喜 from memory ...?! How?! Reading is always very easy, but writing is always difficult, also in your own custom language! But my brain sometimes works very strange! I often learn very complicated characters very easyly! Oh oh my brain struggles with the English word iisili or isyly again! It must be easily!!! To write easily is not very easy for a non native English speaker! Flash-cards don't help really. Repetitions is poison for the brain and makes you tired. Repetition is only effective when the context changes, such as when dealing with a matter. Here in this post I dealt intensively with the words recognition, somewhere, easily, immediately and 喜欢! I hope now, that these words don't let me struggles again in the future, when I write them!

Xihuan is easy to recognize for me because I have seen it so many times... But to remember to write it, I have to break xi down into the three vertical parts. Don't worry about the problems you have with English spelling; many native speakers also have them. Your approach of identifying problem words and practicing them is the best way to get them right.

The key to remembering things well is to connect them with emotions and situations. You can make use of movies or books that you like. For example, if you enjoy reading Harry Potter, you can remember the word "隐藏" (meaning: hole up, hide)like this: Harry, feeling powerless, hid (隐藏) under the invisibility cloak and watched as Professor Dumbledore was murdered. The situation at the location (阝) or on top of the tower became urgent (急) as the Death Eaters rushed in. After being killed (戕) by the Dark Lord's servant (臣), Dumbledore fell onto the grass (艹) below.

I like the Skritter app. I like how it breaks down the radicals. I would like to use that app just so that I will be able to go and look at the radicals and figure out what they mean. I also would recommend that you use traditional Chinese when looking at the characters, because simplified Chinese does remove some of the radicals so it is easier to write, but it may not be as easy to understand if you go and look at the strokes.

Nice techniques, I mean the more you read the more you will learn Chinese, it can be painful throughout the way but hey you can watch videos with subtitles that can help as well. We are doing videos with Chinese and English subtitle and would love to get some support =) Thank you and good luck to all you Chinese learners.

Thank you for such an informative video. You manage to pack in so many valuable tips into just a few minutes. I have recently just started using the DU Chinese App that one of your followers recommended to me. I will be using your voucher codes to make some big savings:). I am pretty good at reading and remembering the characters and combinations but writing is unbelievably difficult for me. I never really tried typing directly from my keyboard yet but now that I have had some good tips from you I will try it out. 谢谢

Really great video that you made! The examples are very vivid and the way that you demonstrate them are appealing and easy to understand! Sometimes with Chinese is just like learing other languages, you get start with reading, speaking and listening are in the other hand the most difficult parts, but it will come with the practice, once you are in the environment with native speaker, the other two parts will get improved so quick that you wouldn't be able to imagine! Keep it up:)

I think it's quite important to mention that if you write characters mainly on the screen you will not necessarily be able to write them by hand 🙂(of course not everyone needs it)

I have been using a stylus explicitly because I need to eventually be able to replicate the tablet writing on paper. My writing is very similar to a 4 year old's ATM 😁

Your charm is irresistible!! You look energetic. You have a great smile. I love you!! I have a frustrating experience. Not knowing where to begin or hitting a plateau can feel demoralizing and make it hard to hit the books and study like you know you should…Having friends from other cultures makes me more creative. In fresh ways about space and how people create their own world and environment. It is best way to connect between creative thinking and cross-cultural relationships

I'm at the stage where I recognize the characters and know I should know what they represent, but am not consistently connecting to the meaning and the spoken words. I'm a little better at recognizing which character represents the Pinyin I typed. Right now I'm using a combination of the approaches you described, but I'm really lacking the key element - regular practice.
