July 19 on The Story: After Oregon voters passed Measure 110 in 2020, decriminalizing simple drug possession, a group of researchers at Portland State University launched a three-year study to track how it was going. Last year they released their first report, focused on law enforcement perceptions of the measure. In short, they were not big fans - blaming Measure 110 for hampering their ability to police proactively and investigate other crimes. The PSU researchers just released their second report, which takes a closer look at law enforcement data. What it shows is that the impact of Measure 110 on policing was not nearly as significant as it's cracked up to be, and many law enforcement metrics were on the decline well before drug decriminalization went into effect.
