Edit: The black diamond is at every 19.2". A little bit more than 19 3/16". Check out other tool explanation videos: kzbin.info/aero/PLTY95XXc6N71G1FkDvqT93KURRaErR8rO

I actually did know all of them, but I've been woodworking for 50 years. On the 3-4-5 trick, you can expand it out to any multiple of these, so 9-12-15 & 12-16-20 work even more accurately. Lots of framing carpenters and landscapers use these in feet instead of inches as well. - Chris

Thanks Chris! Good point

Measuring a square or rectangle diagonally, until you get like measurements and assuming that the corners are squared by doing this is a very common error and does not guarantee square. Look up an isosceles trapezoid. The diagonals are equal but there’s not a square corner in the entire shape. A²+B²=C² or Pythagorean theorem is the only way to guarantee square, 100% every time. The 3-4-5 trick works because of Pythagorean theorem.

Hi 👍looks like you have the measure of that subject 🙃 I have never had a tape with numbers on the back🤔 I know they are old school but I always cared a 4-fold rule as well, all the best.👍🐝🌞

After watching your trick for subtracting fractional values, I was reminded of how jealous I am when I watch like Austrailian wood workers and everything is just simple in millimeters. Much easier to subtract.

I've always been puzzled why the USA doesn't embrace metric measurements? Thanks for your video.

If you hook the tape, you get one measurement different by a 1/16 than if you push it against the stock. Do you just have to add or subtract acvordingly?

The red markings every 16" indicate the distance from center to center or edge to edge(i.e. 16" O.C.) of studs in a common wall and not the distance between them(14½"). The black diamonds appear every 19.2" and not every 19 13/16". 19.2x5=96. 19 3/16x5=95 15/16. After 8 sheets of plywood your layout would be off by ½" and only get worse from there were you to use this math to make a drawing for others to follow.

Thanks for the clarification on the diamond. I don't say it's 16" between opposing edges of two studs. It's 16" between centers.

In the UK we are taught both . I'm 5ft 9" and I drive at 60 mph in my 32" jeans and I drink pints - not at the same time ! But I buy petrol buy the litre in my 2 litre car sipping my 300ml can of Pepsi wearing size 43 shoes .
