QUESTIONS FOR DR. BOZ
1. Tell us about yourself
2. You write books with stories, why?
3. Tell us about KetoContinuum and David’s journey. Who is the book made for?
4. There’s a lot of thoughts in the diet communities that women especially need carbs for hormone health, or that driving insulin too low (with low carbs) is not ideal for optimal health. What are your thoughts? Should we cycle in and out of ketosis?
5. A lot of women say thyroid health requires carbohydrates. Any thoughts on this?
6. Is keto ideal for children?
7. Do you track ketones and glucose daily? Should we?
8. What are the most important markers you track in your patients?
9. Do you worry about higher LDL markers? Or cholesterol markers? Saturated fats?
10. What do you eat in a day?
11. Do you fast? Do we need to fast?
12. Biggest tips to help people eat this way long term?
13. Where can people get your book and how can people find you?

I did get lost on the numbers between glucose and ketones? Could you briefly explain again. Thanks
@JohnnyHughes1
@JohnnyHughes1 2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't need to be hard. The Dr. Boz ratio is glucose / ketones. If your glucose is 80 and your ketones are 1.0 then that is 80/1 which is 80. If you have a glucose reading of 90 then you would need 1.2 for ketones. 90/1.2 is 75. If you are Carnivore or Keto and keep carbs under 20 total per day, it is very simple to control your ketones. All you need to do to increase ketones is increase fat. The easiest way to increase fat is with butter. If your ketones are not high enough to get that ratio below 80, then add some butter (or other fat) to your meals. That adjustment will increase your ketones. Clearly, measuring right after eating or exercise is not the way to go. Any food will generally raise glucose a bit and lower ketones initially. Exercise usually does the same. Also, avoid measuring during the dawn effect for doing the ratio. Basically, measure a couple hours after you wake up or 3 hours after a meal /exercise for this ratio. That is not to say doing glucose reading after a meal is bad.. It is great to know how a given food impacts your glucose levels, especially if you are keto and not carnivore. You don't want high spikes in general. But to measure this ratio for this test, you want equilibrium, not spikes for food/exercise. If you routinely get above 80 for the equilibrium Dr. Boz ratio, then just add a little more fat and a little less protein. Once you get things dialed in, so long as you routinely eat the same kind of protein / fat ratio in the types of meals you have, you don't have to measure all the time. It is super easy to keep ketones above 1.0 and blood sugar below 90 by just tweaking the fat.

@@JohnnyHughes1I'm new to this system.yoy seem to have a really good understanding of it. Can you give me a basic helpful formula based on the doc Boz ratio of 40? What does that look like food wise and fasting? I need to drop weight.
@JohnnyHughes1
@JohnnyHughes1 Жыл бұрын
@@littleredhen3218 the Dr Boz ratio is just the Blood Glucose read divided by the Ketone reading from the meter. If your blood glucose is 88 and if your ketone reading is 2.0 then the Dr. Boz ratio is 88/2.0, which is 44. If your ketone level is less than 1, so a number like 0.5, it will mean you Dr. Boz ratio will be a higher number than the blood glucose number. So 88/0.5 is 176. To keep your Dr. Boz ratio under 80, if you have a normal blood glucose level of between 80 and 100, then you need to keep your ketone levels at or above 1.0.. And most likely closer to 2.0. The way you increase ketone levels is either more fat or fasting. I personally use butter for more fat. You can also use other things with medium chain triglycerides like MCT oil, or goat / feta cheese. Fats (or fasting) increase ketone levels if that is your goal. Dr. Boz says a Dr. Boz ratio of lower than 80 is 'weight loss mode'. That is significantly higher ketones than the 'nutritional ketosis' number that people quote of 0.5. You will need to double 0.5 ketones if 80 Dr. Boz Ratio is your goal. I absolutely shoot for between 1.0 and 3.0 ketones on a normal basis. That means about 80% of 'calories' from fat. I am not saying that is 'required'.. Just telling you how you can get that ketone level.

@@JohnnyHughes1With 100% carnivore I remain in 1-3 range. More like 2.5-3 range. More like 85-90 and 1.7-2.0. I am 49 and was huge carb and sugar addict until age 46.5 years. I was ketogenic until 48.11 (post decimal is months) but struggled to keep gki ratio below 6. Most of time it would remain higher than 9 and only way to hit hard was to fast longer. I have had about 5 36+ hours fast. Longest lasting 52 hours. I found few issues with keto.. first was to eat more veggies. That messed up royally with all the oxalates. I was "super food" addict on keto. Second issue is to eat moderate protein. It made it really hard to get enough calories Finally oxalate discovery pushed me to carnivore... more than 2 g of protein now and first thing I checked was kidney. It improved actually.! And now I am always in 2.5-3 range. And muscle gowth is so phenomenal and noticeable within weeks of going on carnivore.! And I feel much better with 25km limited ride of cycle in HIIT mode. I feel I can do HIIT all day long. Previously I used to max out at 45km ride and hardly any of those were in HIIT mode. I follow 20 seconds HIIT with 5 mts easy... so about 20 HIIT session in about 1:10 hours with limited 25km ride. I have limited it because most "easy" mode is in aerobic zone (about 50%) and I feel aerobic is terrible for health.

Dr. Annette Bosworth, M.D. (Dr. Boz) is Amazing and her “ketoContinuum” step by step chart is Brilliant !! ✨ She needs to be interviewed more often. The Doctor Boz Ratio (DBR = Glucose/Ketones) there are certain thresholds depending on what your health needs are (eg. Losing weight, autophagy, reversing chronic illness) .. the key is to have a DBR of 80 or less ✨ Her online course “consistentlyKETO” is the absolute Best and for anyone who wants to learn how to properly live a ketogenic/fasting lifestyle .. this course is a Must !! ✨ Thank You Dr. Boz and Judy

It is probably a nuance for most people but around minute 25 Dr Boz talks to people like me who have been ketogenic for a while and maybe 16:8 and are stuck. She does NOT say "eat more fat" but "shorten your window". She says soon after that that she doesn't usually talk about this. I have been listening for this and thank you Judy for getting her to address people like me. My morning glucose before black coffee is just below 90 but jumps to 105 once I have the coffee. So my Dr Boz Ratio is over 80 and usually around 125-150. The 36 or 48 hour fasts still scare me so I am going to shorten to 20:4 and also I am replacing some red meat with salmon at least twice a week. Thirdly I have a little personal sauna and I try to do at least 2 a week but she mentioned daily saunas.

I've been reading and listening and viewing and reading about nutrition for 20 years, with increasing excitement as I learn about keto, and then carnivore, and find this video/interview to be at or near the top best source of PRACTICAL information about how to stay 'keto" or 'carnivore." I especially appreciate Dr. Boz's advice to a) measure, measure, measure ketones/glucose; and b) it likely takes many MONTHS for your body to really get unhooked from being so glucose-dependent. Thank you both for a great conversation.

Bravo Dr Boz ....in simplicity is the key to success in this way of eating . I feel that this is a way of eating to support good health , not a constant préoccupation with what to eat all the time . The preoccupation with only food has become way to much . There are influencers that post only pictures of food and recipes and that in itself will set back many people who try this way of eating. The danger for eating disorder is exactly this préoccupation with food , not the fasting or eating just meant. Thank you both for an amazing podcast. Hopefully to be repeated.👍👏👏👏

@@NutritionwithJudy Judy did you ever consider teaming up with doctors that promote microdosing magic mushrooms. I think if doctors that promote your style of behavior modification along with the power of psychedelics I think that could be a match made in heaven. My thyroid went nuts on carnivore, my sleep suffered terribly with carnivore and fasting. I ended up with serious blood sugar dis-regulation eating zero carb (which absolutely baffles me), and lost a lot of my tolerance for stress in my life. I'm still not feeling as well as I think I should even just being higher low carb with no fasting, but I'm at least slowly improving since leaving the strict stuff behind. I'm sorry but that isn't false news, I lived it. I love Dr Boz and her enthusiasm for the subject but I had to stop following her because she absolutely does seem to deny exactly what happened to me.

I don't fast, because it doesn't work for me and I listened to my body when it didn't feel right. So instead, if one day I feel like having 3 meals, I do, usually I only have 2 meals and just to throw a curve ball every so often only 1 meal. But coming from a disordered eating background and to finally have the freedom of guilt when I eat, the last thing my body wants is to fast! So I decided to do something I never used to do and is probably so much better and that is to do higher protein and resistance training every other day and light HIIT on the other days! Beats the hell out of fasting, trust me Ginger I get it!! ;))

Too much protein causes high blood sugars? I thought gluconeogenesis was demand driven and not driven by supply. What is the mechanism? High protein is insulinogenic. Are you referring to massive amounts of protein causing insulin resistance over time and then elevated fasting glucose?

I've wondered how many people on a carnivore diet are in ketosis. Some KZbinr mentioned that, while strictly carnivore, she'd go out of ketosis after large meals of meat. It appears that some people have more efficient or active gluconeogenesis. But even then, I doubt glucose levels would spike that much or for very long on carnivore. Anyway, would it really matter to temporarily be out of ketosis? Other than for specific medical conditions, is there a reason people want to be in continuous ketosis?

Carnivore/keto ruined my thyroid and sex hormones, I lost even more weight after being underweight for years prior. Every blood marker indicated I was in poor health and my cholesterol was sky high. Gluconeogenosis is extremely taxing on the liver and wastes a lot of mitochondrial energy in the process. Ray Peat turned my life around for the best. I dug myself out of a rut and feel better than I ever have. I highly recommend AGAINST the carnivore diet and to do some research on the ‘bioenergetic’ approach to eating.

I’m skeptical; I checked her out several years ago. Some of what she says is simply good nutrition, but other things in her protocol contradicts what Judy recommends, as well as others. Magnesium supplements are absolutely great, but it needs to be the right kind of magnesium. A cup of Epsom salts is nearly worthless! I don’t mean to be overly critical, and I appreciate the interview, but this was nearly a waste of time. Pushing lots of plants and supplements did NOTHING for me, though I agree with eliminating gluten. Sorry, Judy, I get far more from your podcast with Laura Spath. ❤

@@lynnecobb9399 I was using about 1.5 tsp salt a day and tried increasing it to 2tsp. I drink half my weight in water ounces per day and eat zero processed food, so 2tsp seemed reasonable. I did the for a couple of weeks, but my hands and forearms felt SO dry. Even my dermatologist noticed. She said I need to moisturize. I do that already, but it's what we eat, not a lotion deficiency! So I cut back to 1tsp a day of Redmond Salt, but that seems too little. I also must supplement a lot of potassium - KCL and feel better with 5000-6000mg a day, but cannot get that from a ketovore diet. I'm 64 and have found a balance in my electrolytes over the past 1.5 yrs to stop my nightly leg cramps, but it's a challenge figuring out what works for me ... and doctors have been no help. Drug and cut.

How many people lie? All of the sudden there's people saying they've been carnivore for years etc, and so on. Really? Readapting to carnivore regulates consumption of food. So if they're over eating, than they're lieing. It's a shame, grown ass adults with the whole world at there finger tips, and they have no idea of how to eat. And they need to get rid of the term "providers." Providers of what? Does this remove the obligation to do no harm? This info has been around forever! It just wasn't 'cool' to eat meat back then.
