Meat Fishing Madness on a Big Creek

There is no doubt Graeme loves his river fishing, so in this episode he recalls a great trip he had last season up on the Hereford & District stretch of the River Wye. Just a regular day ticket stretch, but he had to make several moves to different swims, catching fish as he went. Bait ??..Plain old luncheon meat, in different sizes, but plenty of old school river fishermen know how good this bait can be. Lots of fishing tips as usual and Graeme put this film up in readiness for the opening of the river fishing in England on the Glorious 16th June. Sit back and enjoy, it should get all "creek" enthusiasts thinking of spending a day by running water.

Brown crumb falls apart, barely binds - white crumb binds like 3 day old porridge, mixed with a kilo of cement! Something to bare in mind when in the tackle shop, I’ve been caught out a few times. Rolling meat is my favourite coarse fishing tactic - a few tins of spam, a bucket of groundbait/pellet and a trout fishing style jacket with all the odds and sorts needed for a day roving the river. Don’t forget some bread crust in case you spot any hunting chub!

Another great video Graham. Despite living near the River Great Ouse in Buckinghamshire (which I believe held a record for Barbel in the past) I still haven't managed to catch any Barbel in the UK yet. My only Barbel successes to date have been on holiday in France on a campsite we used to go to where the river Dordogne & Vezere meet at a little village called Limeuil. Not huge fish but 4-8 pounders on a lightweight travel rod with Emmental cheese as bait in the fast flowing sections was fantastic sport. Now I'm retired I want to get back into UK fishing & Barbel will be my first target species.

A great start to the weekend, another masterclass with Graeme as he goes after the one fish species I didn't catch in over 50 years of course fishing. No not the chub but the barbel. I went after them on the Thames and used Luncheon Meat near the Large weir at Marlow. I swear I hooked one but whatever it was it took me down stream, walkers had gathered to watch me (about 20 people) and in my panic to show off and land it my rod top and line got caught in a tree the line broke and I lost that fish. I still have nightmares about the embarrassment, disappointing the crowd and not being able to identify the fish. So watching you do it with comparative ease makes me feel like hitting the dislike button. Still a great video nicely shot and edited, thank you for posting.

I've found a Zoom Q8 that works well in natural light and you've got phantom power and will charge off a power bank. I use them at festivals and they don't fart near a base bin.

Hi Graeme, I used to use the maggot cannonballs on the Royalty on the first swim d/s of the bypass bridge. You could floatfish close in, I'd use white crumb so they would sit like cricketballs on the bottom and the barbel would be rolling them around trying to break them up for the maggots. I miss barbel...sigh.

I remember those days well..I don't even know if you can get golden breadcrumb groundbait now,but as you say it would be a real knee trembler watching Barbel in front of you pick up a ball of groundbait and shake them to get at the maggots. Can't be many of us left who remember those days. Rivers just seem choked with weed nowadays.

In my opinion no. I have had Salmon to 35lbs,but I don't think I would ever land a 35lb Barbel if they grew that big !! A 35lb Sea Trout would probably run into 2nd place.
