Front Mission: Gun Hazard is my favorite in the series. The composers did a fantastic job (Hamauzu, Nakano, Uematsu, Mitsuda).
@delta789010 жыл бұрын
FYI, the SNES game "Cybernator" was actually altered/censored from the Japanese Assault Suit Valken in a couple small ways. All of the character portraits were removed from the in-game dialog sections and several minor characters had their dialog cut out entirely. There is also a suicide scene by one of the enemy characters towards the end of the game that was removed. For those who really love the game, it's worth checking out the fan translation of the original Assault Suit Valken instead of the official Cybernator release for the proper game experience. Also some of you probably noticed glaring similarities between Valken and Front Mission: Gun Hazard. The director of Assault Suit Valken (which came first) actually left NCS, joined Square and headed up the production of Gun Hazard, hence the almost identical feel between the two games. They even share a secret special weapon: a super powerful Napalm Gun. In Valken/Cybernator, you have to beat the first stage without destroying ANYTHING but the first boss. Then, in the second stage, beat that stage without dying to keep the gun for the rest of the game. If you can also beat THAT stage without destroying anything but the boss (including asteroids!) you'll earn the ability to upgrade the Napalm Gun just like the other weapons in the game. Otherwise the Napalm Gun will forever be at level 1 (though is still wildly powerful). In Front Mission: Gun Hazard, the Napalm Gun is simply hidden in supply crates throughout various stages of the game. It cannot be purchased in stores. Though powerful, I find it rather difficult to use in this game and prefer using the shotgun as my unit's primary weapon.

Taking the character portraits out of the dialog was dumb. It makes it less Leynos-y.

Ranger X on the Genesis, Virtual On for almost every system, Tech Romancer on the DC, and Armored Warriors(really solid beat-em-up, sadly arcade only as far as I know.) Have you guys thought about doing an episode on Dinosaur Games? As in, games focused around dinosaurs, not an 8-bit SOCAL sports game where you play as dinosaurs.
@tetrisdave10 жыл бұрын
We haven't thought about a dinosaur only episode. We've covered some of the Jurassic Park games before. I'm sure there's enough of them out there. What are your favorite dino games?
@n0isyturtle10 жыл бұрын
David White Hmm, without mentioning the JP franchise? There were a lot of really bad ones like Dinosaurs for Hire and RR(doesn't even deserve to be spelled out,) but some decent ones too. I really enjoyed the Cadillacs and Dinosaurs beat 'em up in the arcade/MVS (although I think the Sega CD version was very different,) Dino Crisis and it's sequel(s) were pretty fun, Dynowarz on the NES, Gon for the SNES (sad this never saw a States release!) and obviously Primal Rage and Turok are staples of big scaly beasties. And I mean, if we're really getting down to it Yoshi's Island is not only a great dinosaur game but one of the best platformers on the SNES :) Now you've put dinos on my mind, brb gonna play a little Gon right now! edit: Had to add Bubble Bobble. Dunno if it qualifies as a dino game strictly, but it's voice had to be heard due to awesomeness!

Game Sack hey guys, I would really love to see a Joe & Dave all-time favorites video. I think it would be cool for you both to list your top 10. To make it easier on you, you could even make multiples for different eras. for example, 8-bit era, 16-bit era, 32-bit, 64-bit.. and so on. IT WOULD BE AWESOME!
@tetrisdave10 жыл бұрын
Thanks! We did a top ten 16-bit episode last year. We will be doing more top 10's. Hopefully soon.
@christianhorton932310 жыл бұрын
David White I really appreciate you getting back to me. Yeah, I saw the top ten 16-bit episode. I would really love to see a "personal" top ten episode though if you guys get the chance. Ten from each of you with each persons opinions on the others favorites as well. That would certainly be great! Also, I have noticed that there has been so much focus on SEGA and not so much on NES & SNES. I would really love to see even a console review with a few great games thrown in to it because to my knowledge your only Nintendo console review is for the Nintendo 64, which I love, but I just would really love to see the NES & SNES as we have had one for what I believe to be every single SEGA console. Please let me know if you do plan to do any of this in this season as it would mean a lot to me and a lot to I am sure quite a bit of your dedicated viewers. Thanks Joe & Dave for hearing me out.
@tetrisdave10 жыл бұрын
We have every intention of making a SNES and NES episode. I'm not sure when it will happen but it will. As you mentioned we did an N64 episode but also one on the GC. We're almost out of SEGA consoles to cover then it will be Nintendos turn. Saving the best for last.
@christianhorton932310 жыл бұрын
This is great news! I did know about the GC video, I guess it just slipped my mind. I love all 8 & 16-bit era consoles that I have had the chance to play. Keep up the great work!

Seeing the N64 version of Bangai-O in action and having acquired Japanese N64 recently to play NTSC imports, mostly US, I wanted to check the ebay prices - and they made me kinda cry, I cannot pay THAT much for bangai-o...
@n0isyturtle10 жыл бұрын
And one of the biggest catch 22's for new collectors is that videos like this put the game on a lot of peoples radar, thus making them unobtainable to the average collector. It happens all the time. Kotaku (or any website) releases a hidden gems list, next thing you know Hagane has gone up in value by $200 in a couple months. As a gamer I like that people become aware of past games that never got their proper due, but as a collector I want to pull every article and video on retro games from the internet so my wallet stops crying 'no mas!'
@SumeaBizarro10 жыл бұрын
noisyturtle Yeah, gamester81 comments on the "rare" games that are not even rare but just get a huge mark up for popularity, like EarthBound on SNES and I would say Conker's bad fur day, there is copies out there, numerous but the markup in price is just crazy compared to rarity or whatever. I am mostly talking about especially crazy prices of PAL european copies of Conker, US copies especially loose carts are outright cheap compared to that, though shipping still adds way too much to that price. Yeah I got the Japanese N64 just to import Conker at some poin, and buying a clipped JP N64 was cheaper than import booting cartridges, and also offer better compatibility over all.
@SumeaBizarro10 жыл бұрын
***** 250 but yeah, you can get a used wiiu and brand new game or two for that price.
@keeperxiii10 жыл бұрын
SumeaBizarro "buying a clipped JP N64 was cheaper than import booting cartridges, and also offer better compatibility over all." - Do you mean carts that load roms? I remember reading something about a recent one that was better than the Everdrive and offered better compatibility but I'm not really into these things. I just thought yous should know.
@SumeaBizarro10 жыл бұрын
keeperxiii "Do you mean carts that load roms?" - No, I talked strictly about cartridge that is intended to be used on PAL system to boot an NTSC game and vice versa, specifically since I have my eyes on importing conker from US. I been eying on everdrives too but you can get PAL versions of those as well. Basically Both Japanese and American N64's are identical down to using the exact same lockout chips. Japanese system will play american games and american N64 would play japanese carts, only prerequisite is to clip out portion of the cartridge bay that stops you from inserting the foreign cartridge. Given the N64 key or whatever I was looking at cost 10eur more than the japanese N64 I obtained and it specifically had reported some minor problems with conker, I opted to buying a Japanese N64, still have not found any use for it but I hope soon I will. ***** Indeed I have seen some clearances of Wii U's, especially the white ones for really cheap, remember seeing white one brand new go for 199€ so definitely. Still I would love to get the N64 copy of conker even though it means I am just hunting a good deal for NTSC one.

You know, sometimes, just sometimes, it's really a shame you guys never talk about PC games. We could have had some Mechwarrior, Earthsiege/Starsiege, Shattered Steel, Mech Commander, Shogo, Heavy Gear, Slave Zero* and so much more. It was a good episode nonetheless. I once played through Front Mission: Gun Hazard on an emulator (didn't have an SNES anymore) and had great fun. Too bad the fan translation only came out way later. Game Sack Do you say that the problem with seasonal episodes is that they are seasonal in the context of people not wanting to watch them out of season? I could see that for some holidays like Christmas or a general "Summer" one, but I think people are into Halloween and Halloween-like games all year long. I'd be curious to know the metrics behind seasonal episodes. Personally, I think If I saw a back catalog of dozens of episodes for a series, I might gravitate toward seasonal episodes as a place to start because they it provides some relatable context for getting into a show. I think I found Jon Tron a little annoying, actually, until I watched one of his Halloween episodes, which was hysterical.

Metal Warriors for the SNES is my favorite mech game of all time... Different mechs that you utilize with completely different abilities. Even has a multiplayer vs mode... Many hours were spent playing this game in my house...

I'm still pissed that *Hideo Kojima* never made a third Zone of the Enders. Does anybody still care about Metal Gear Solid anymore? I feel like it's like Halo: past it's prime but still being milked for every last drop.

MG Rising was surprisingly fun. I think the series has run it's course, but off-shoot titles in the same universe are more than welcome. Now if only he would make a new Snatcher game....

Metal Gear just keeps getting better and it's fanbase is ever-growing. However, I really do wish we'd get a 3rd ZOE.

Toasty's Stuff The series really peaked with Snake Eater. After that, every MGS game was pretty much 7hrs of FMV with an hour's worth of gameplay.

Two of my favorite mech games are: 1) Omega Boost (PSX) - third person space shooter 2) Iron Brigade/Trenched (XBLA) - 3rd person co-op tower defense shooter... Great with a group of friends! Check these two out for the next installment! ^_^

Also, the PC has some of the best mech games - it's a bit of a travesty that none have even been mentioned. Mech Warrior, Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri, Earth Siege, etc. I know you're console fanboys but when you do a vid on mech games, you should at least do a little investigation. These are all 90's games so if you do games a lot younger than that, you got no excuse really.

Thank you for showing some love for Metal Storm. I'm not a big mech fan, by any stretch, but that was a very fun game that I rented a lot back in the day.

Front Mission is available on DS, Front Mission III is available on PSX and on the PSN as a PSone classic, and Front Mission 4 is available on PS2. If you have an interest in games like Fire Emblem or Advance Wars, you should seek these games out.

You guys should cover Armored Core, it's probably the longest running mech series but also the least talked about. It does have a cult following, though. It's all about extremely deep customization and high-speed action.

I'm a huge anime head and a big game fan but I've never really been too fond of the mech genre but there was one game when I was younger that I vaguely remember. I believe it was called armored core or something, that was pretty cool if I remember correctly.

I'm happy to hear Game Sack preaching the good word of MetalStorm on NES because one of the happiest moments of my life was finding a copy for $35 because the corner of the top label was slightly peeling. It was going for $50+ at the time, so I wasn't going to complain about a minor blemish that had no effect on gameplay. When I see what it sells for now I'm REALLY happy I didn't hesitate on that purchase. That said, for anyone who has not played it I highly recoommend it if you have an Everdrive or an emulator. It's not worth the price it's going for now but is a fun game and one I wish I knew about as a kid.

I remember reading somewhere that the slow down in Bangai-O was purposefully put there by Treasure as a design decision. Basically toward the end of the games development they went in to fix the slow down and found that it made the special move feel much less impressive without it, so Treasure decided to leave the slow down in, that's why the Dreamcast version also has the slow down.

Omega Boost for the PSOne is one of my favorite mech games. The game designer, Yuji Yasuhara was a member of Team Andromeda which of course is famous for developing the first three Panzer Dragoon games. Since the game is by Polyphony Digital, the game uses the Gran Turismo engine.

My all-time favorite console mech game was the original Armored Core on the Playstation. I loved it so much that I bought a second copy, a second Playstation and a link cable so that my friends and I could play full-screen (unfortunately, full-screen didn't have some basic options, like "Stage Select"). I loved the ability to build a mech exactly how I wanted it, and the robot designs were all created by Shoji Kawamori (the guy who created the iconic Macross/Robotech VF-1 fighters). The gameplay, while a bit clunky still felt exciting, and figuring out what parts were needed for the next mission was a thrill. Unfortunately, later games in the series were slow to adopt analog controls, and by the time they did they had ramped up the difficulty to the point where it was more tedious than fun (they added a bunch of new parts that were used to cool the mechs' weapon systems and engines, which wasn't needed in the first game, making the new mechs feel much weaker by comparison because warning lights were always going off), and consistently made the levels feel cramped and boxed in. By the time Armored Core 3 rolled around I had lost interest, and I actually hated Armored Core 4 because of its severe loading times, tiny levels, and obnoxious learning curve. I haven't revisited the series since, but I'll always have fond memories of that first game.

A great mech game for me is Cyber Troopers: Virtual-On, at least the first, I still couldn't manage to play the rest of the series but the first one (avaliable for Saturn, PC and arcades) is really good, It's full 3D mech vs. mech battle action every second with multiple stages, very good music, destructible objects and a wide variety of mechs to choose from, casually I tried the game (and still play It sometimes) in a two-cabin arcade in a game zone near my house! And It's still there, I think I am a bit lucky for that. xD

Yes! That game came with a PC we bought when i was in high school, and i loved it. I've tried to get it on an emulator, but sadly i haven't found one that isn't buggy to hell. The graphics are dated, but still very fun to play.
