Netflix removed Knights of Sidonia a few years ago due to some restrictions, they added back the 2 season but not the movie. And this movie is only available now on Amazon Prime iirc.

It makes sense in the series as the bullets have to penetrate the Gauna's thick placenta layer to hit the core. Otherwise they will regenerate endlessly. The ridiculously long barrels (holding the coils needed to accelerate the shells to propel them fast enough to penetrate) is practically a requirement. There is also the SMG version but those are only effective at very short ranges, usually deemed suicide range for anyone who is not Tanikaze.
