Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo Review - Nintendo Switch

Mecha Ritz is like STG crack. The FM OST is out of this world, and - when you get locked in - the gameplay loop will not let you go. If anyone on the fence is scanning the comments, it's really as good as everyone suggests. An easy 9/10 for me, too.

This game pushes you and rewards you for being aggressive and I love it. It gets wilder the better you get with a brilliant ranking system and I highly recommend.

Outstanding review. I love your use of language. As colorful as the game itself. I enjoyed this a lot on Steam, and am looking forward to playing the Switch version. Also, great shout-out to this developer’s other game, Dezatopia - another inventive and memorable experience.

Thanks a lot! I do try not to fall into the standardised review trap, but it's not always easy - especially when reviewing only one genre. Dezatopia was definitely another cool game with another amazingly weird but somehow super catchy soundtrack.

@@ShmupsOnSwitch To me, Dezatopia feels very much like a Sega Saturn game. It almost seems as though the graphic elements and aesthetics were taken directly from a game of that period. The color palette, the way sprites are drawn, even the apparent resolution. I always wondered if the developer did all of that intentionally. I often think he must have.

This and Hazelnut Hex were both such pleasant surprises this year. Mecha Ritz takes home my award for best shmup release of the year, though. It's one of the most stylish, unique, varied, and accessible shmups I've played in quite some time.

My wife watched me play as the bullet patterns got nuts on one of the bosses. The weird abstract music and sound effects as I somehow weaved through what felt like impossible beautiful bullet patterns kept her glued to the screen. When the boss died she said 'Wow, that was so intense, artsy and memorizing' .... sums up my feelings exactly

Great review. I have it on steam and could be wrong but the resolution seems better on this newer version, whilst the graphics have been buffed up often in subtle but effective ways.The dev has also added more ships,music and rebalanced them and stages can be v different The game is as u say awesome and the dev gave the update free to existing Steam owners which was incredibly generous with the amount of updating he did. If u get it on steam u also get the old version to play as well. This must be great on switch though as I can see it being a great portable shmup.

Just got this thanks to your review. Also got Hazelnut Hex. I looooove this game. It actually reminds me of Dodonpachi in the pacing and shot style and mowing down tanks crossing bridges in a powerful burst of firepower. Awesome Awesome game

Oh man, I love RefRrain: Prism Memories. If I could choose one game to be brought over to Switch from Steam, that would be it. Surprised it hasn't happened, to be honest.

Does this have the option to play with fixed difficulty setting? The game itself is amazing, but everytime I play it, I can’t think of anything else than I would enjoy it much more with a more traditional / common skill setting as an option. I guess the variable rank system is one big point of the game, but in any case, a traditional option would be great. Full disclosure, I’m a total newbie, but I’m somehow completely hooked on shmups. Rolling Gunner & Star Hunter DX being my favourites of recent shmups. They are both amazing.

I don't think it does, although you can adjust your starting rank in the menus. To be honest, I'm not usually the biggest fan of rank systems in games, but the way it's done in Mecha Ritz, I don't mind it too much. (By the way, for a total newbie, you've got some fantastic taste in what you've picked up so far. Keep enjoying it!)

The slowdown seems to be a Switch thing, because Steam version has definitely far less of it... which can be quite painful in high ranks, lol!

I can imagine. It gets a bit ridiculous on the Switch once you hit higher ranks - but it's also a bit of a lifesaver!

Oh man this game is wild! I can't tell you how many times I've lost shields n lives due to slow-down snapback! Sure I lost them, but point blanking aggressively is just so fun that I don't care!😆 I hope there's a patch to be able to configure controls, skip the dialogue between stages, and restart on pause. I'm that guy that just wants non-stop action and the dialogue kinda irks me lol

I also thought the dialogue was unskippable for a long time, but, iirc, skip is actually mapped to Y for some reason (counter-intuitive since that button's not used in the game).
