My son is a union ironworker and certified welder. I taught him to solder when he was about 8 years old, stick welding at 10 and by 12 he was TiG welding. I know how to weld and am lucky enough to buy good welding equipment but I’m no way in the same league as him. His welds are a thing of beauty. They actually asked if he wanted to teach at the union training center when he finished his apprenticeship. He was 22! He told the lead instructor he’d think about it in a few years after he got real world experience under his belt. I’m so proud of my son!

@@kjm0677 The thing is that while funny it's really common, you are welding and smell something burning which is kinda normal in a shop then look down its your apron or the shirt that is on fire, you put it out and keep welding unless its a big fire. Sure you freak out the first couple of times but welders on the job have set themselves on fire enough times to just know how long they have until its too much fire. (Just don't tell OSHA!) Experience can bring some complacency with it.

My Grandpa was a welder for nearly 70 years. When he was helping teach me to weld (when I was 8) I told him that he was a really good welder, he looked at me and said “you can’t be called a GOOD welder until you’ve welded a train car full of wire”. Guess I’m just fair after 48 years, but I can live with that, it came from Grandpa. 😁
@WhatIsSanity
@WhatIsSanity Жыл бұрын
Hah! Every person I knew that welded didn't have a high estimation of their skills either. Even my father was humbled by another mans skills and that is unusual for him. Those welds were really good though, so understandable why he still at 15 years after retiring hahaha. No seriously I worked on some of the steel he welded and it was factory grade or better, which was especially impressive given the dude was so old he shook like a leaf in the wind and nearly expired after a couple of hours. Some of those joints were so clean it looked like they were bent or cast as a single piece. First time I met a master of their trade. The old man was very nice too.

"Kids, learn to inspect welds.".....wise words from our man Sandro 🤣🤣👍
@superdoodle2
@superdoodle2 Жыл бұрын
I am a weld inspector, pipeline among other things as Sandro mentioned. The red stuff you see coming out of the weld at 10:00 is called dye penetrant, it is a specific type of oil colored with dye that draws itself into cracks and other imperfections. The surface is then cleaned and what the guy in the video is spraying is the developer, essentially aerosolised chalk, that draws the red coloring out to the surface. Also where I live, carnival rides are definitely subject to regular weld inspections, at least on load bearing areas and repairs.

I’ve been welding for 48 years, one of the first things I learned was just because it’s aesthetic doesn’t mean it’s a good weld. The pretty part comes with experience, make sure you have your prep and penetration down first, then practice on making it better looking. Lesson 2: just because someone bought a large tool box with tools doesn’t make them a mechanic, same goes with a welder.
@reaganharder1480

Yep. You can make an ugly weld that penetrates and you can make a pretty weld that don't. That said, quite a few of the bad welds shown in this video pretty obviously didn't penetrate..

I learned how to MIG weld when I was on a Baja SAE team. (We had opportunities to learn TIG welding, but not enough access to a machine to get enough practice in outside of the few group classes.) At my university, we learned from people who were trained to be aircraft mechanics and they made sure your welds were ON POINT. Plus, our competition made us do weld samples for every welder who welded on the chassis, with destructive testing for one of the sample types. I found welding to be pretty fun and relaxing at times. The whole experience definitely made me start to look around a lot more at things that are welded together and at the quality of the welds.

Sandro reminds me of my dad with how he works on cars and welds too. Though my dad was an Iron worker first and a master mechanic second. He had to wear full leathers when welding and years ago he was welding in an enclosed space for a building on a construction site and he felt this pressure and sudden heat for a moment (note: he had earplugs in so he couldn't hear anything). He was confused for a moment, finished up his weld and when he came out he found out gas had exploded down where he was. So please, for the love of all that is holy, wear the damn leathers! It WILL save your life!

HEY DONUT, if you haven't been told yet, Sandro is so dope. And we appreciate you incorporating him as much as possible. He's a riot and he meshes with the crew. I seen him wit Nolan, wit James, with Justin. Never a skipped beat. U guys even thro him wit complete stranger and put him with Angelina, and they were electric off rip. SANDRO FOR PREZIDENT!!!!

Angelina is ill too. The 2 of em are the b3st of the ppl uve brought in for this channel. And with the 2 of em it gives u a good balance. She's the teacher and like the good view in the automotive scene And Sandro is the bad and darker and unfortunately reality of the auto industry, or the devil on the other shoulder. Its like salt in a batch of chocolate cookies. Not right without it

I remember on my first welding job I was welding aluminum structural with meg. I was looking up, spark, came down with the bottom of my shirt up and I was on fire didn’t stop even though if that’s a little hot smells a little didn’t realize what was happening till someone laughed and pointed at me and I was on fire. God bless welders one of the most blue-collar jobs you can do.

10:25 I worked as a machinist in a petrochemicals plant and my man Sandro is spot on. I usually beveled the pipes for fabrication shop between 30 and 37.5 degrees and you get a nice V shape when you face them on each other.

4:56 people forget sometimes, you have no money and something breaks.....So you pull into the nearest shop and beg the guy to just rig it up for the last 20 dollar bill in your pocket, and he manages to make this happen which isn't RIGHT, but it's better than BROKEN and it got you by. At least I hope this is one of those situations.

3:04 Uhhhh... welding doesn't create x-rays.... but also the mask does protect against the intensity of the light. If it were just UV protection you could use sunglasses.

Our local carnival consists mostly of vintage rides. Very sketch welds. The last time I was there is the last time I ever go to a county fair. I was riding a spinning ride that moved you up and down in the air. One of the service doors flew open and proceeded to smack the rides being banged around so hard it was throwing sparks when it collided with the bars. The very lazy "I don't get paid enough to work here" worked, very slowly came over to the controls and decelerated the ride, rather then hitting the emergency stop button. Meanwhile the rides kept hitting the door. The door was a mangled mess (could have injured someone) and the ride operator proceeded to grab duck tape and tape the door shut. Everyone in line and on the ride noped out of there. Welds on the rides were bad but not only that, very cracked and rusted supports.

Thank you for this. I’ve done stick, mig, tig , resistance, compression and electron beam welding. On pretty much all types of steal and aluminum. And special alloys for the different military projects. I love doing it.
