I am baffled that someone doesn't know who Zach Courts is, but I guess it isn't impossible. You need to look at more of his stuff. He's on Revzilla now, but used to be on Motortrend. Speaking of loud pipes, my city a few years ago had an issue with loud bikes and vehicles, so they put up these decibel meters to show if you were too loud, similar to those radar speed signs. Rather than deterring anyone, people would just pull up to the signs and rev the heck out of their engines to try and get the highest decibel count. The council took them down within a week.

To add a point to the "loud pipes save lives", in the emergency response world there is a phase called sirencide. At 60mph the forward projection of sound is overcome by the speed of the vehicle. That is with a speaker designed to face forward. Now, the exhaust of a bike exits behind the bike at any speed. Even from a basic view the sound is facing the wrong way and the noise isn't going to save anyone.

The speed of sound in air is about 1200km/h. The exhaust from a few moments ago is gonna bounce off the environment and reach you before the bike, even if it faces you. Unless your Grom is reeeeeeally modded, or you're riding an f35 on wheels? It will be more high pitched, because of the Doppler effect. But you'll hear it. Honestly though, loud pipes won't save you from drivers being completely oblivious to all sound and sight, or outright spiteful towards motorcycles and bicycles.

They don't do much to save you from other vehicles, but they absolutely save pedestrians. The only time I've ever had someone step out in front of my bike without looking was when I had the Db killer in the exhaust. So the phrase is accurate but not in the way most people think.

someone once told me on a Motorway/Highway after you indicate always count to a minimum of five or ten in your head before pulling in to the next lane, if your turn signal is audible on any dash cam footage and you waited a good few seconds to pull out rather than right away and some one hits you it's more in your favour then when you have to make an insurance claim. always give other drivers and riders time to see that signal not worth chancing it and getting in a crash because someone wasnt paying attention for a split second.

I read something awhile back, and I think it's accurate. When you're driving a car, your brain gets stuck looking for other cars and larger vehicles. You really have to train yourself to watch for bikes, motorcycles, etc. It's work you have to do as a responsible driver, and it's worth the trouble.

@lostalone9320 I try to have an eye out when I'm a passenger for that kind of thing. It's rarely a thing but, but just calling out pedestrian on the right as you're approaching the turn helps just in case. I've also been on the pedestrian side, where I was at a red light, and began to cross when the light changed and walk signal came on, the car almost hit me turning right across the crossing.

5:30 I'm sorry but no one will ever win me over to the lane splitting side. The entire point of lanes is to create predictable behavior that everyone around you can understand. When a small subset of vehicles operates outside of that behavior no one has any idea what to expect. Do what you want, and I understand "iTs LegAl" is a great slogan, but at the end of the day you are introducing chaos to an otherwise broadly orderly roadway when you do it, and as such I believe that everything that happens to you while lane splitting is your fault. From sideswipes to meteor strikes, it's your fault.

The Harley wobble in the beginning is actually a result of the rubber mounts in the drivetrain and the fact that the swing arm pivot on dyna models (and also FXR & Touring to a lesser extent) is mounted in rubber causes this behavior at higher speeds and through spirited cornering.

I disagree with his take on the jumping bike and the Jeep. Theres a common belief of look before you leap, and if you cant you dont leap... or get a spotter to varify the leap is clear! There obviously wasnt any precautions made for safety, and i didnt see, but a couple spots where bikes have landed in that area! Stupid is as stupid does. Ignorance of a clear landing zone is a death sentence!
@jjcc8379
@jjcc8379 10 ай бұрын
As someone who has broken bones due to a bad spotter (not motorcycle though, different sport) ... this. There are motorcycles on the ridge on the video. If jeeps needed to pass there (who knows where that was filmed, maybe it was the proper path ), someone should've spotted and tell to wait until it was a safe jump.
@jdshaw2751
@jdshaw2751 10 ай бұрын
@jjcc8379 if you look at where the motorcycle landed, there were only 2 spots where a bike had landed prior to this filming. That is NOT a regular jump where the Jeep was in the wrong place. Jeeps are just as allowed to use the area as bikes, so there 1, should have been a spotter, and 2) someone should have looked before he leaped!

My first experience on a motorcycle was on a 70's Chaparral trail bike. We thought we'd fixed the throttle real good. We were 17, we were skateboarders, we used a soldering iron/solder. Something failed, the throttle stuck open, and I tried my best to salvage it. The ghost riding bike dragged me straight to the closest barbed wire fence and tried giving me the shake. I finally let go, as I watched it launch outta the ditch. I stuck to skateboarding, and 30 yrs later, I'm still not into motorized stuff. I ride roadbikes, own a canoe, drive a Ford escape. But I love Donut, and love cars. Thanks guys.

Glad they called out the lane splitter. Bikers do stuff like that all the time & then blame other people for "not looking." Nah dude, you drove into the back of the van. That's on you. LOL.

Should do a “Mechanics React to pre-KZbin Car Videos”. Examples: The Legendary Buick LeSabre jump, the Geo stuck in snow getting its rear fascia ripped off, the dude ghost riding his lifted Silverado into a light pole, the hot rod breaking the straps on the dyno, etc. I have a bunch still on my hard drive.

Zach is the man! Such a humble dude and a great example of how to be a good person. Definitely tied for the top position for moto content period. Sorry Zach but F9 has been putting out bangers too.

The real history of "loud pipes save lives". It was before the 1980's. Car before then were not as quiet inside as they are now. Back then you could hear noises like sirens and other loud noises like loud pipes from cars and bikes coming from around you. Then in the 1980's till now car companies have been making cars more quiet on the inside, so you don't hear as much from the out side of the car. Out side your car you can hear a police siren from miles away but in side you car you can barely hear them when they are a few 100 feet away.

Got my first motorcycle at 15. My Dad gave me one simple rule. When on the road, treat EVERYONE as they are trying to kill you. It has served me well. I assume I am invisible to all cars and if they do see me, they are trying to kill me.

For the Jeep clip, I have seen another aftermath clip where the video shows a big dent complete with tire treads on that Jeep's hood. Wicked skills from that Moto rider to not go flying out the front door on impact.

The mom situation happened to me but with my driving instructor, we were approaching an intersection and i had the priority but a van was coming from my left without showing any signs of slowing down so i stopped, my driving instructor was behind me on the car and stopped too, but with me on his hood. Everyone was ok tho, just low damage on the bike and car and he paid lunch after

5:40 the streetfighter move this guy pulls is legit, but not remarkable. It happens in every city every day everywhere. I have personally avoided at least a dozen injury crashes (in my 43 years of driving on public roads) by employing similar maneuvers. Stay aware, be predictable, boring is good. Being predictable and aware of one’s surroundings is good, especially as a driver among the masses of the civil public; no matter where, who, how or when you live, these things will remain true.

As a trucker, lane splitting absolutely terrifies me because people don't respect my space in their cars and try their hardest to end up as hood ornaments in their cars. Having a bike purposefully getting close enough I might not even see them is terrifying. Having them do that WHILE cars are paying more attention to me than the bike is the stuff nightmares are made of. Maybe don't split lanes around trucks. The cars are all looking at and thinking about how big and slow and annoying that truck is and often miss everything else around them. If i had a dollar for every time someone passed me, got in front of me too close, then immediately had to stop (unintentionally brake-checking me) because they didn't see the slow traffic in front of me, I'd have to work way less.

you shouldn't lanesplit in free running traffic anyway. just save it for the lights and when its traffic that slows to crawl. it's really handy then though. I live and bike in thailand and there's multiple reasons to keep distance to trucks, random wheel exploding etc and you never really have a good reason to split lanes when traffic is free flowing and so many reasons to not. for the situation in the video the thai solution would have been simple: just go past the car from the left. the sidebank is free real estate here and additionally you see much further ahead on it. but really if the traffic is free flowing like that here you're already going beyond the limit so just go with the traffic..
