Thank you, this explanation is really helpful! I have a silly question - why does the tension increase as the belt moves over the drum? Would the frictional force between the drum and the belt not reduce the tension?

First of all thanks for the lectures :) Youre a life saver. In the video, I think you made a sign mistake when you're making the deltaN substitution. And I have 2 questions.1-) What happened to the integral constant when you take the integral of both sides due to seperable diff eqn? Shouldn't there be a 'c' constant on one side of the equality ? 2-)Should we consider B angle in radians or degrees?
@gohan1001006 жыл бұрын
He did make a sign mistake. Definite integrals don’t get an integration constant. All angles are in radians.

could you explain why that angle is delta theta/2?
@MichelvanBiezen6 жыл бұрын
If you rotate the triangle to the right by theta/2 then the left side of the triangle will be vertical, and the angle between T and the horizontal will be zero, and the angle between T + delta T and the horizontal will be theta.

why is the sum of forces in the x direction 0? Shouldn't it be equal to some dF since the entire string should move in the direction of the bigger T?

Good explanation, but is the pulley drawn motor or moved?
@MichelvanBiezen7 жыл бұрын
The concept of belt friction can be used for pegs and pulleys alike. In this section it will apply mostly to non moving pegs or posts.

Michel van Biezen Thanks for answering me. My question is: why does the right side have T + dT, why does dT exist in this system?
@MichelvanBiezen7 жыл бұрын
The tension on one side is greater than the tension on the other side. The difference is dT when the angle subtended is d(theta).

Why is the sum of forces set to zero if the tension forces are unbalanced?
@Health_and_Wellness_with_Alex7 жыл бұрын
Is it because the tension force is slightly off balance so you can say it equals zero?
@MichelvanBiezen7 жыл бұрын
The difference in the tension is caused by the friction force (which balances out the forces).
@NSBeverything6 жыл бұрын
because frictional force is one which balances the difference in tension and for no slip condition sum of all forces is put to 0
@furkandurdu96154 жыл бұрын
sir i want to ask something, we have the same belt on the left and the right side of the differantial roller part, so how can be a force difference between these two, isnt it supposed to be equal on the both sides ? because of the nature of the belts and strings etc. thank you very much...
@MichelvanBiezen4 жыл бұрын
If there was no resistance, no friction, and no moment of inertia on the roller you would be correct. But since part of the energy is transferred to the roller, the tension will be different on both sides.
@mihaly10277 жыл бұрын
Does this only apply to belts or could it be extended to a rope on a pulley?
@MichelvanBiezen7 жыл бұрын
Yes, this applies to a rope on a pulley as well. A good example of that is the belt and pulley system of a car (although that is not considered a flat belt). We tend to ignore the difference in tension due to friction on a pulley.

sir why didn't you consider the centrifugal force
@MichelvanBiezen6 жыл бұрын
The wheel is fixed at its central axis and rotating about that axis. The difference in the tension of the two belts provides the torque rotating the wheel. The "centrifugal" force here does not play a role in providing the torque.

When a small amount of extra cable is wrapped around a post (through a small angle) there will be a small amount of extra tension
@mechanicalengineering27734 жыл бұрын
@@MichelvanBiezen so how only right side be T+ΔT While left side is stay T sir ?
@MichelvanBiezen4 жыл бұрын
The tension is not the same on both sides. That is due to the friction between the cable and the post.
