@1:45 the vertical members (including the center one) in the Pratt are under COMPRESSION--the diagonals handle tension. The opposite is true in Howe truss, wherein the vertical members handle (some of the) tension and the diagonals are compressed.

Which kind of bridge is best to resist earthquake

During the last big earthquake in Los Angles several bridges collaped because the support swayed too much (more than the 30 cm overlap) so that the support moved to far away and the bridge section was no longer supported and simply fell down. Now the building code in LA requires a 75 cm overlap. Also the amount of steel reenforcment bars placed within the concrete supports and concrete sections have been increased. The key is to make sure that on the sides the bridges are connected, the connection holds and on the side when the bridge rolls or slides, the supporting sections overlap sufficiently.

Bridges that utilize the hanging cable supports tend to do better in an earthquake.

Ma non credo che erano "transposed". Ho notato anche io da diverse fonti che nelle capriate i nomi degli schemi sono "transposed". Sarebbe interessante capire il perchè (why).
