Thanks for the update Sheelagh, that's an odd mech. I haven't moved on to tubeless yet but one I'll never forget!

I checked with my mechanic friend after and he explained it’s a very rare issue but unfortunately one he’s seen before on this brand of tires (Renee Herse) So I won’t be buying them again but I’ll be trying Vitoria Mezcals that I’ve heard good things about!

When you explored a different tire, I hope you considered downsizing as well. The lack of tire clearance you have is sure to rear its head again in the future.

Haha I actually went bigger! But I went bigger on the frame as well ;) I built up a custom Surly Bridge Club: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5WQg51qZpdqn80si=tOBiDglDaPdrOeo7 and switched over to Vittoria Mezcal 27.5 x 2.25s. You're right, the 48s were pushing it on this one. Happy to now have the clearance for some chonky tires :)

Komoot has a very weird idea about bike touring routes, sometimes it suggested to take me on some ride that would have been nearly impossible even on an XC.

Were you riding your bridge club on this tour? I finally got my 27.5 BC and outfitted it with a 660mm jones H 2.5 bar with the ergon Gp3 evo grips and a Brooks B17 saddle. Put an adjustable 60deg stem on to raise the handle bars more. Had a pro bike fit done last week and he had to raise my saddle 2-3cm to get me fitted to my XL frame. Road yesterday before changing out the stem and was still getting numbness in my hands..putting too much wt on the bar. But I'm now looking at going to 2x from the 1x11 stock drivetrain. Have a FSA 30t chain ring but spinning out on the flats. Wanted to know what drive train you selected for your 2x setup for touring as I may be looking at switching to 2x. Did you have to put a boost BB on your bike? Really like the 16 gear inches I have on the 1x for climbing but I need more high end gearing for the flats and downhills. What would you suggest?

Hey Steve! I ended up going with a 2 x 10 Deore, 36-26T in the front and 11-42T on the cassette. According to my calculations, with 27.5 x 2.25 wheels/tires that should give me 17-90 gear inches which I felt would cover my bases. But I still need to ride it more. I'm finishing up new wheels for it this week and then I should have a chance to ride it more. The BB required for my setup was BB-MT501. Good luck with the rest of your build!

So, you re-enforced by view of tubed vs tubeless self sealing tyres.

Not trying to change your mind at all - different solutions are right for different people of course! But just wanted to give you a full picture. I spoke to my mechanic friend afterwards and he explained this is a very rare issue, but unfortunately one he’s seen before on Renee Herse tires specifically. So I’ll be trying out a different brand I’ve heard good things about :)

@@SheelaghDaly Thanks for getting back to me. Punctures have been a common problem over many years, where I live in Buckinghamshire the roads are generally lined with thorn hedges which are the most common cause of punctures. my current tyres are schwalbe marathon plus on my roadster/city bikes, and Continental ride tour extra on my hybrid, both these tyres have been very robust/durable (no thorn punctures in many Kms) So I am very happy with these tyres and still believe that traditional tubed is the best solution for touring and leisure cycling.
