You like Art of Rendering? Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Mechanical Principles no. 5 came out in '21, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole video has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the simulations a big boost. He's been compared to How it's Made, but I think Rendering has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '23, Rendering released this; Mechanical Principles no. 14, their most accomplished video. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "2:30 from Mechanical Principles no. 12". A machine so catchy, most people probably don't pay attention to the core mechanics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the Art of Rendering itself.

I wonder which of these are purely conceptual and which are actually used in today's machines
@krzysztofbroda53763 жыл бұрын
i feel like the general concept at 1:00 could be used on camshafts to make valves open super quickly and stay open and then shut super quickly while still using constant speed rotation of the camshaft, approaching a square wave rather than the sinusoidal profile we have now

3:32 would need to be designed differently to function irl. It's similar to the functioning of a rotary engine, but this one looks like it's buckling like crazy because the central piece is able to buckle. Some real life radial engines have 1 "master piston" that sort of grounds the mechanism, preventing this wobbling.
@v8pasi3 жыл бұрын
It's a master connecting rod (to which other rods are connected) not "master piston" that every real life radial engine have,

True. As a fan of Mechanical Principles, it certainly became less 'principle' and more 'let's see how many intermittent hinges we can throw in'. I do like this part for some of the visual flare, even though on first watch, you kind of have to figure out exactly what you're looking at. I find it less messy than part 3 due to smoother transitions and camera angle changes. But now that you mention it, I can't imagine the end torque of some of the more spectacle driven machines. There is something to be said about staying practical. I don't mind the more obscure, but I'm hoping we can get back to basics. Seeing that rotary engine at the end however gives me a bit of hope that part 6 will be really good.

It would be really nice if the power source were colored to indicate where the power comes from, maybe in red, with a vector to better illustrate which way the force is applied. A linear force would be a simple straight arrow, and a torque force would show a clockwise or counterclockwise curved arrow. As it is, I have to watch mille times and rewind to understand properly
