Mechanical Resonance with a Head Scratcher

Hi! I just have a question. Are the stems vibrating because they're linked together at the base or because of the aire? What's the coupler that make them vibrate?

There isn't enough energy coming from them to transfer through the air and cause the other ones to vibrate. It is because they're attached to a common base that as soon as I start to vibrate one of them the energy can transfer to the other ones, and because it matches their frequency start to vibrate.
