Thank you very much! I have watched many videos on this and I kept getting mixed up with where the wires came from and which actual wires hooked up to where, which made me feel a bit uncertain. However, after watching your video, everything was super clear! You showed us everything separately, showed us each wiring and explained it perfectly. This made perfect sense to me and made me feel completely comfortable doing something like this on my next project!

It sounds like you might have a dead end 3wayone box will have 3 wires, the other box will have 2 of those wires on the 3way as travelers, use those same wires on the switch with just 3 wires and use the other wire as your common

Good video. I honestly don’t know who’s worse, the builders that put the switch on the side of my laundry room in a counterintuitive (opposite side from where it should be) location, or the original buyers that likely cheaped out on having two switches installed. Both were jackwagons in my opinion. 😂 Anyway, thanks for making this video man. 🍻🇺🇸🍻
@MechanicalChaos4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, good luck with your laundry room, if you are goimg to turn a single switch into 2 3way switches, you'll probably need to wire it as a "dead end 3way"
@2bc3594 жыл бұрын
Thanks brother! Just out of curiosity, why do you think it would likely need the California 3 way? I’d like to keep this as simple as possible. 🍻🇺🇸🍻
@MechanicalChaos4 жыл бұрын
If you are turning a single switch, both your power and switch line would be in the same box and the normal way to wire a 3way has power in one box and the switch line in the other box

I was at my girlfriend home and it only had three wires. I watch several video's be for I got to yours. You explaining thing help me figure out the problem with her switches which. When she had the switches changes out years ago the person use the common wire at the ground wire because there was only three wires. Your video help me figure out he had wired the switch back incorrectly. Plus, my girlfriend now knows none of her switches have a ground wire. Now we are curious, is not having ground wire for the switches dangerous?
@MechanicalChaos3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that my video was able to help you. You're correct that having no ground wires is unsafe but it could be that the ground wires hook to the Box itself.

Am I mistaken or is there a matching series that the traveler wires have to connect to? I ran a three-way and it is not working right now, except one side only so before I completely take this switch apart I’m wondering if there is more to it than what was shown here.
@MechanicalChaos6 ай бұрын
If only one side of the three-way is working, more than likely One of your commons and your traveler on one side of one switch got mixed up. Your travelers go on the screws that are the same color and you're common goes on the different colored screw

I have a house I am renovating. It had two three switches. Neither work completely independent of the other. Could the hot be in the wrong terminal in one of them? I think I also noticed the white wire is on what I would think is the ground terminal on one of the switches. One switch had to be in a certain position for the other to work. I assume it is the first in that circuit going to the fan/lights. I might need to recheck to make sure they are actually three way SWITCHES.

Your ground is good . Your neutral is good . Your common is good . But you have to emphasize the red and black traveling wires need to be on same terminals duplicating each switch . If they are reversed it will trip the breaker .
@MechanicalChaos4 жыл бұрын
No it won't, that doesn't even make sense, how does the electricity know what color the coating is, it is the same electricity, as long as they are on the brass screws.

I read through all the comments and I can’t believe nobody asked you this question... what was that wizardry you did to connect the ground wires??? Instead of taking a pliers and putting a curl on the end, you did what? Somehow steadied the wire and twisted the switch around it? I have never seen that before! Was it a special feature of the switch? Can you please explain how you did that? Thank you.

How would you connect the wire if your taking power from an outlet with 14-2 wire? Thanks so much for the video bro, helped me big time
@MechanicalChaos5 жыл бұрын
That would just be your power into the switch, and if possible have your switch wire come from the other switch. If you have to have power and switch wire in the same box, you would need to do a "dead end 3way"
@manuelsalgado85105 жыл бұрын
Mechanical Chaos you lost me on the dead end 3 way
@MechanicalChaos5 жыл бұрын
If the switch line and power are in the same box with a 14-3 all in one box and only the 14-3 wire in the other box is called a "dead end 3way" but if power is in one box and the switch wire is in the other with a 14-3 wire between the boxes, it would be the same as what is shown in the video.
