discussing the straight punch in Wing Chun Kung Fu - Sydney seminar March 2014
*A note about this channel the lineage:
Sifu Nima King is the owner and team leader of Mindful Wing Chun, a CST Wing Chun school in Hong Kong with affiliations around the world. Mindful Wing Chun is wholeheartedly dedicated to passing on the internal wing chun method as passed down by Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin who was the longest serving student of Grandmaster Ip Man. Chu Shong Tin lived with Ip Man for 5 years (1950-1955) and was coined the title ' the king of siu nim tao' by his master Ip Man.
He was a legend in the world of Wing Chun (in particular the internal method of wing chun) and spent 64years passing it on full-time before he passed away in 2014. Nim King practiced under hin in Hong Kong for 9 years and established Mindful Wing Chun under CST's guidance. Nima is also on the board of Directors for the 'Chu Shong Tin Alumni' which is a group of senior students of CST that were hand picked by him to establish the Alumni and to uphold and continue his teachings and Wing Chun legacy after he passed away.
Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin was a very humble and low-key Wing Chun Master therefore its only after we began putting his videos online, that people started to hear about him. In fact, majority of the main Wing CHun teachers (of the Ip Man lineage) who began practice in the 50s and early 60s (apart of Leung Sheung and Lok Yiu) were trained by CST even-though they were Ip Man's students. This is due to CST being the most snr and main teacher of Ip Man's school in those days.
Nima was lucky to start his practice under CST in 2005 because that's when CST decided to change his teaching to all internal practice so that he can pass on "Nim Tao' and 'Nim Lik' (the mind power/energy cultivated through internal Wing Chun practice) to his students.
Nima, even though a non-chinese and much younger than the other students of CST, attained a high level of these final teachings. He now mainly teaches the seniors within this lineage and also travels around giving workshops and is working on an online program so that master CST's teaching can have a greater reach.

I did try to add elbow up other than just do the shoulder pivoting while throwing the punch these days and found out is more powerful but using less effort, .It really work. Thank you Nima.

There is a similar concept in Systema. The aligned punching arm lets the returning force go out through the elbow instead of into the shoulder and body. Energy is transferred to the target through a relaxed, properly formed fist and wrist combination that is only tense enough just long enough to let the transfer occur.

One of my favorites videos so far. My shoulder still tenses sometimes because of the karate training I did for a long time. But there's definetely something different when I am all relaxed. Great explanation. Cheers fromBrazil

Fantastic explanation Sifu Nima. Can you post a video on how to perform bong sau? It would be great to understand how the mechanics work when the shoulder needs to be involved to make the shape. It would also be great if you can describe the different arcs that are involved.

great video. you completed my western boxing and muay thai punches technique, also the whole body needs to be relaxed and also the core and the muscles of hands and legs and wrist need to be solid for good body constitution and toughness and speed of punches.

Nima, I've watched this one about five times already. I think it made my punch really better, but then I saw a class of Sigung where he says that everything is circular, including the punch. Now my punch is like this upward motion and really weird. I'm going back to the elbow explained on this one, but really wanted to understand the circular motion in punching. Maybe that could be a video sometime! Cheers from Brazil!
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 7 жыл бұрын
every single movement with the arm or leg must have a circular quality because the elbow and knee can only move in an arc (circular) fashion if the hip joint and shoulder joint is utilized correctly. this is because these are both ball joints! so the movement of the elbow (upper arm bone) for a punch must be in an arc. but when we think about the elbow going up to expand the punch, we are ensuring that the hinge joint in the elbow is utilized correctly. so this video is highlighting the correct mechanics of the elbow joint (the hinge joint). regardless of any movement with the arms or legs, if the shoulder or hip joint is moving, then there must be a circular aspect involved in the movement. hope that answers your question.
@r2knbabrasil601
@r2knbabrasil601 7 жыл бұрын
That made a whole lot of sense. What I am doing now is to imagine my shoulder as a big wheel that turns and makes the rest of the arm move, and then I think about the hinge. This kind of visualization made me feel my shoulder less tense and the arm more loose!!! Thank you so much! Cheers

Nima! I believe the 'result' is that you see your elbow coming up but one doesn't actually tries to get it up the way you explain. I just want to say the relation between your forearm and your bong (upper part of your hand) is more like the relation between a 'nail' and a 'hammer'... Thats how you 'penetrate' a nail into someone else's body!... The result is you see your elbow coming up! The force behind the hammer comes from your body (relaxation, mindfulness, emptiness, qi or whatever you prefer to call it!) which you should know better than me!

+Hatef Monajemi Thanks for your comment! In this video I was just explaining the mechanics and giving a method or an idea to students on how not to push through a structure to develop power. and you are absolutely right, if one can not lock up their joint by pushing forward through their structure, then the power source will be from body mass, relaxation, qi etc. cheers mate, Nima

Love your videos. Wish you had teachers in Canada. For time being working with WSL bing tsun. Back to my question, from what I understand from your other videos, it is the centre of mass behind the punch that makes it formidable. But in the static case you show here I assume that mass is not moving forward, it’s like you say like the wall. Dare I say there is an intent to move forward? I did Yiquan in the past. Dim past.

Good question. and its not the easiest to answer without tactile interaction. I'm actually not exactly sure what the actual reason is that CST could produce so much power without moving his body. He actually says that he doesn't know and that he talked to a few ppl like engineers and physicists and they couldn't give a decent explanation. He mentions this in his DVD a few times... But my feeling is that once the joints are actively relaxed and we gain control of them, we are able to utilize them all simultaneously, similar to attaching a chain around 20 cogs (like in a bicycle) and turning all the cogs at the same time. So even though there is no visible movement in other joints or the body they are still active and assisting in the movements. Its much easier to explain these things on video and this is the main reason why I decided to develop an online school. It has a couple of months to go :)

Wow. Videos like this make me believe why wing chun fails in the mainstream is people using wing chun punch like a boxer, a shitty boxer. But to pull this off under duress that’s another challenge. And to pull it off without getting hit even tougher. Nevertheless a great video. Trying to learn best as I can.

Totally agree man. to be able to do this under pressure let alone in sparring and fighting is a bit challenge. that's why its important to practice sparring, pad work, and all types of training. Many 'internal' practitioners unfortunately dont get this point!
@elel2608
@elel2608 6 жыл бұрын
Pascal 0 The point of internal martial arts is to absorb the principle and then manifest the principle in the context you want to manifest it in. The problem internal martial arts gets a bad rap is because: 1) the people who represent it don’t know the principle and therefore can’t express it in their movements in their chosen context of fighting (for example, MMA). People conclude then that it sucks. 2) people who might know principle but never worked to adapt the principle and tried to applied the inappropriate shape (for example using decontextualized techniques that were codified into the tradition centuries ago) into modern combatives. And so then get owned and people assume internal arts suck.

Do we have to use nim tau at the same time?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 9 жыл бұрын
bestteacanada That would be ideal but 'using nim tao' is easier said than done :) Even if we can use a relaxed and fluid structure to perform a punch in this way it would be very powerful just from the point of correct mechanics.
