The center of mass is shown for the height lifted, so we are just looking at two turning moments. The clockwise moment of the mass 588N over a distance of 0.5m, the equals 294N (588 divided by 0.5). The anticlockwise moment has the 294N divided over a total length of 1.4m (0.5m + 0.9m), this gives 210N. Can this be used as an alternative method?

Friction force opposes the direction of motion so it would just depend on which way it was being pushed.

hello, may i ask, where did you get the 9.8 from ? (the first bit of the video) I understand the 60 but not why you multiplied it by 9.8?

It was to turn the mass (60 kg) into a force (measured in Newton's). Remember that free body diagrams relate to forces not masses. In order to convert, you multiply by 9.8 m/s^2 which is the acceleration due to gravity.

Because it wasn't needed based on where the forces were applied and their directoons. I'd recommend watching the video again.
