This scene, along with several others, are perhaps my favorite of the scenes from Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, "Barry Lyndon." It is perhaps the most beautiful film ever created.

The scenery of this movie is actually jaw-dropping.

this film has no "good guys" or "bad guys". everyone is flawed. that's what makes it realistic

Every scene looks like an oil painting. Amazing...

Thackery wrote that it was a "A Novel without a hero."

+TomthatiscalledTom Indeed. In my opinion it is one of the most exquisite shots in the film.

If you pause it at 3:07 then it looks like a painting

The Thackery book is so much different. This duel does not happen in the book. The step son is killed in battle and Barry Lyndon does not lose part of his leg. His son is killed from a fall from a horse, but Kubrick shuffled around a lot of scenes, inventing the one of the two gay officers. It is a truly great film, probably (in my opinion) his last real masterpiece. Everything afterward seemed to be missing a certain element. I still have no appreciation of Eyes Wide Shut. It feels empty.

what i find so significant for redmond barry is his roles in the duels - as the young challenger, it is all a fake, whereas lord bullingdon is upset and insecure, because his challenge is "real", and as the older one, being in the "cpt. quinn role", barry again doesn´t play to the rules just as he is used to do, and shoots to the ground --- is that point understandable? ))

Barry Lyndon's stepson is such a little toad.

Is that the Lyndon Estate that they're at? I always assumed that Barry turned it into a gambling parlor to help generate income for his debts. LOL

+Fan Made Videos You mean the place where Bullingdon confronts and challenges Barry? They're at a gentlemen's club, which is why Barry is snoozing in a chair. Clubs back then really didn't have set closing or opening times since they were owned by the members, so he's sleeping off a long night of drinking and gambling. You can see quite a few other club members doing the same thing all throughout the sequence.

yr welcome to yr opinion, sir, but to call Eyes Wide Shut "empty" merely shows the reflection of yr own inability to view it. trust me when i say EWS was brilliant and like those who couldn't understand Van Gogh or anyone truly ahead of their time, it's easy to dismiss art we don't understand and not look at ourselves to realize that perhaps what is missing is in the viewer, not the work... my guess is that you've never really given it a chance, as people with pre-concieved notions most often do
