Medal Ceremony: Eamonn O'Kane wins gold for Northern Ireland

Paddy Barnes, Paddy Gallagher and Eamonn O'Kane have won Northern Ireland's first Commonwealth Games gold medals in boxing for 16 years.
Light flyweight Barnes, bronze medallist at the Beijing Olympics, beat defending champion Jafet Uutoni of Namibia 8-4 on points.
Gallagher followed that with an 11-6 success over England's Callum Smith.
Team captain O'Kane, from Dungiven, then saw off England's Anthony Ogogo 16-4 in a one-sided middleweight final.
Nineteen-year-old Thomas McCarthy got a silver medal after being outpointed in the light heavyweight class in the Talkatora Stadium in Delhi.

Catholic, Protestant, Irish, Northern Irish. he was competing for Northern Ireland and therefore they had to raise the Northern Irish 'flag' and play the Northern Irish victory song. They couldn't raise the tri colour or play the soldiers song because it wasn't the ROI who won, it was Northern Ireland. Ireland isn't apart of the Commonwealth so they can't raise flags and songs connected to Ireland? And even if he is Irish and not N. Irish, what would you prefer he represent as his country? Northern Ireland or England? you'd be complaining if God Save The Queen wa played even if that is the recognised anthem for Britain and Northern Ireland, so be thankful the Northern Irish Victory Song is a recognised Irish Folk Song

They should give an athlete the option of using either the Irish tricolour or the Ulster banner because neither flag is official in NI anyway, they both just represent the different communities.

You don't understand. God save the Queen is the British national anthem which all the Home nations used to use for football. It's just for the Commonwealth Games that they have to use an identifying tune.

actually that is the cross of Saint George, it is based on the province of Ulster arms which place the red hand on the Corss of De Burke (red cross gold field) which was used by the (English) Norman Earls of Ulster in the middle ages. The cross of Saint Patrick is a red saltire on a white field. Saltire being more of an X shape, like the Scotland flag.

Since no-one's answered this in two years, I will, as being ex-Liverpool..."The capital of Ireland". 'The troubles' in Ireland have split the land between protestants and roman catholics. This flag is a protestant flag, with a poke in the eye for rc's (I think the red hand is esp offensive). At times the two groups have stopped killing each other, but offences going back 500 years are remembered, & used as excuses to start up trouble again. Shame, it's a beautiful country, and beautiful people.

Michael Thompson The red hand is the symbol of an old Gaelic Chieftain, O'Neill, it is more of a Catholic symbol, but is more neutral in the past 100 years. The offensive part is the crown that is put on top of the symbol

The lyrics were written by an English lawyer, it was made world famous by an Australian composer, and the tune likely came from a Scottish harp player. I’ve never thought of it as a rebel song. My grandmother was as Orange as they come and she loved this song.
