Medal of Honor: Frontline is the fourth game in the Medal of Honor series, and was published by EA Games. The player character in the game is that of Lt. Jimmy Patterson, from the American OSS. Frontline takes place during the events of the first game and chronicles Patterson's journey as he fights his way across Europe into Nazi Germany during World War II. Frontline was released in North America for the PlayStation 2 on May 28, 2002 and for the Xbox and GameCube consoles on November 10, 2002.
In 2010, an HD remake of the game was included in the "Limited Edition" PlayStation 3 version of Medal of Honor.
Frontline is a first-person shooter where players take control of the protagonist player character in a first-person perspective where they fight through levels set during the Second World War against the Wehrmacht using historical weaponry of the era, performing a series of military operations. Briefings take place at the start of each mission, which advance the plot and introduce new characters. Each mission is structured through a number of linear levels, each with differing locations, levels of action and styles of gameplay. Initially the player character begins on the frontlines during D-Day backed up by other computer AI-controlled soldiers with an emphasis on fast action-orientated gun-based gameplay. As the story progress however, the player character is sent on a variety of other missions including a number of covert and undercover operations in locations such as military based, German-occupied towns and manors, submarines and countryside settings. The player character is tasked with objectives during levels that range from infiltration, espionage, rescue and recon. Because of the variety between missions and locations, gameplay also changes pace. While many missions involve Allied assaults on German targets others include elements of stealth and exploration. For example one selections of missions has the player detach from an allied raid to infiltrate a German U-Boat in order to get to a secret facility while another has them rendezvous and sneak into a German headquarters in disguise to rescue an operative. Many missions are performed solo yet some include an AI companion for backup. Health is determined by a health bar that can be replenished using a selection "medikits" found throughout levels with varying degrees of effect.
During missions, players can earn medals by the end of each level be meeting requirements such as completions of objectives, eliminating an amount of enemies and maintaining a percentage of health throughout, all represented by a bronze, silver or gold star.

Back when the series was Saving Private Ryan mixed with 007, and WWII was still "cool", this game delivered intense action, cunning stealth missions, massive battles, and great voice dialogue! Still holds up better than the recent games.

If only EA could remake medal of honor frontline with a great developer like Respawn and turn frontline or a new moh game into something like jedi fallen order or titanfall 2. Then we'd have a huge hit on our hahds.

Jimmy Paterson isn't faceless! We'll never fleshed out too far, we know he is a master agent for the OSS, a good soldier, a pilot and speaks poor German, we even see his face during the train level, on a wanted poster. Calling Jimmy Faceless, is like call Gordon Freeman faceless, we know a good deal about both.

I probably spent hundreds of hours playing this when I was younger and I remember and loved it. The one thing that will always stick with me when I think about this is the level "Arnhem Knights". The B.A.R., Panzerschreck, the MG 42's, and that soundtrack that will always stick with you (if you have not heard it, just look it up).

I kind of resented how the disguise missions, while never very complex to begin with, became increasingly truncated in the various Medal of Honor sequels. Frontline's two disguise missions transition into unavoidable combat so abruptly it's insulting.

As such, I was wondering if you had any plans to review an old FPS known as "Nosferatu: Wrath of Malachi"? I would be most curious to hear your opinions on it and I couldn't seem to find an existing review of it within your list. Anyhow, continue on with your excellent work. I'm glad I got Frontline as my first MoH game, had hours and hours of fun getting my arse kicked in those stealth missions because I was too young and stupid to figure out how to flash my identification at the guards, love this game. Sadly that was the only MoH game of any real credit I could get my hands on, I had European Assault and Rising Sun but I found them personally less impressive than Frontline.

I liked Rising Sun the same as Frontline, maybe a little more because it finally introduced a checkpoint save system with the field phones, but I agree that European Assault was a let down that took several steps backwards.

My only gripe i discovered as a kid is that I'm pretty sure all weapons spare the shotgun have the same level of accuracy during ADS. Zoom in on an enemy with a sniper rifle that is at the limits of the games rendering. Keep the crosshairs on him, and then switch to your pistol. You will hit him while hip firing. Otherwise really loved the game and the weapon variety still feels decent enough despite knowing that quirk.

I've always read that Frontline is technically inferior to Allied Assault, but sometimes is pretty hard to me to get why. Sure, resolution is obviously inferior, still the NPCs offers a variety never seen before or after (about 300 possible combination of equipment/uniforms/faces etc. if I remember correctly) and are animated even better than those of Allied Assault. They even have lip sinc and, again, a lot of different face models! How often do you see that in a FPS? Especially today? Also, levels easily offer more variety (in terms of visuals, at least) than those of AA. You will hardly find a level resembling another. If only they had spent a little more time remastering it decently (since they did). Anyway, it's nice to hear your retro reviews, thank you for you effort!

It's funny how I'd played Frontline before most any other FPS in my life, with the first one ever being Star Wars: Dark Forces 2, on PC. My older cousin (about 23 at the time) brought it over for him and my dad to play, thinking that they'd like it, since the cover-art reminded them of Saving Private Ryan (also one of my favorite films), and they wanted to see if the game could live up to the movie's expectations. I remember being told to leave the room, wondering what could be so good about the game, or why I had to leave, and when I eventually played it, a year later, with A LOT of begging to my parents, I got my ass kicked... The game may not have been as hard as I remember, but I just recall getting stomped on just about every level, since I wasn't used to how an FPS worked, or a rather violent one, for that matter. I never did actually beat Frontline, but I did beat Rising Sun countless times, for some reason, and loved both games equally. I just recall getting to a level in Frontline that required you to get past a metric-fuck-ton of snipers in a rather dark factory-like area - not the one in France, where you shot at Germans on parked ships and submarines, I distinctly remember each level, ha. Either way, I love these 2000 era shooters, since I played a lot of them growing up, and they inspired me to play the good, old classics, like Doom, the Build Trilogy, Quake, etc, that helped shape me into the twitch-reflex adrenaline-junkie of a gamer I am, to this day.

Of all the MOH games for home consoles, this (along with European Assault), are the best. MOH undeground was my favorite until I played this one. My God! Did they put some sort of magic into the software when they made games like this? I feel some kind of temporal displacement after I push the power button when finishing a gaming session of MOH Frontline. And then I remember..."oh, yeah...this is 2016, not 1944...!" This is just to show how much passion used to be put into making games, so much so that it really sucks you into the historical context (or a fictional universe for that matter) , having the same power as a book or a movie. Nowadays we mostly play PRODUCTS for PC and consoles. But back in the day, we used to play GAMES...

Ah, good old Frontline. Easily the best WW2 shooter ever made. And not for the graphics. They weren't the best even for its time. Or the controls, though it WAS one of the first console shooters with a control scheme that just felt correct and natural. No. Frontline was the best because it took itself and its subject matter seriously, unlike Wolfenstein (which, don't get me wrong, the whole genre does owe its entire existence to) and yet, it had that sense of humor that seemed like it could only have been born of somebody's grandpa's retelling of his time in the war. Even when you were neck deep in crack SS shock troops attempting to kill you swiftly and brutally, there was always that pissed off malevolent butcher knife wielding Nazi chef who hated you more than anyone else, and when you got severely injured and where kicking down death's door and couldn't find a medical kit, you could always swipe a fresh loaf of bread, gobble it down, and be back on your feet just like that. And just when your disguise and papers had the elite Gestapo agents checking your ID fooled, in barged an angry officer waving his gun around looking for the schweinhund who had stolen his pants. Oh sure, it had plenty of action, and it was a good shooter, but really, it was something more. It was an experience.

you should try Allied Assault on PC. It's similar to this one but better, and easily the best in the series

Allied Assault was okay, but it lacked something that Frontline just didn't.

@ ChrisMathers3501 : What did you think of the first game, assuming that you have played it? To me, that game and _Frontline_ are easily the best in the series with _Rising Sun_ almost being up there.

Oh yeah. Also Underground. Those were the days, man, lemme tell you. Here's hoping that the writers of the new Call of Duty game, now that they're going back to WW2, take a page from that old book about what made Medal of Honor so great.

You should review Spec Ops: The Line, it's one of the best military shooters out there, even if not's on a gameplay level.

Google PCXS2 for an emulator, and ROMs can be played by owning the game and using a legit DVD if I recall correctly.

Nasko Kolev I didn't mention piracy because of the questionable legality.

What do you mean by using a DVD, couldn't you just download the roms directly?
@SpeedySPCFan

Salokin Sekwah Yes, you can do that, or you can use the DVD the game is on. Either one works.
