Too bad some don't like this!?? I had the privilege of flying some missions there for a few months. Army pilots are just plain "Dawg" nuts crazy. One came back and got me even though I begged him not to. Glad he did. Hope you "people" disliking this are never in a situation where you need pilots like this. You should be ashamed because even though you dislike what they did, THEY WOULD HAVE COME BACK FOR YOU EVEN IF THEY KNEW OF YOUR DISLIKE.

For those of you wondering why "Snakeshit Crandall" and "Too Tall Freeman" weren't awarded the MOH sooner, both were put in for it, but at that time there was a 2yr reporting limit on award evaluations, and the limit had passed. Both were awarded the DSC instead. The 2yr requirement was removed in 1995, and the movie "We Were Soldiers" put their actions back in the spotlight, and both were reevaluated. MOH evaluations are also constantly ongoing and reviews for different reasons can change the review of a candidate; one active evaluation ongoing now is for a Civil War candidate.

...and we should have ongoing MH reviews for phony MHs when evidence is provide the MH recipient was a traitor or his citation was based on lies. I also assume EVERY DSC recipient would like to have their DSC upgraded.

The Book We Were Soldiers Once...And Young brought attention to the battle. A Trip back to the LZ in 1993 with Vets from both sides, brought more attention to what happened courtesy of ABC's They Were Young And Brave with Forrest Sawyer... The Movie came out in 2002. Otherwise your answer is proper. Once eligible again after 1996... Crandall removed his own name from candidacy to give Ed Freeman a better chance. Once Too Tall got his, Snake's application was then re-reconsidered.

During this same battle, SP/4 Willard Parrish killed more than 100 NVA soldiers attacking Moore's battalion from the rear. He saved Moore's supply area, the HQ element and all 3 companies. Willard was presented a Silver Star. (Note: That was ONE HUNDRED enemy soldiers!)

What I an CLEARLY stating is he; Killed NO NVA, he shared the danger EQUALLY with his entire crew, he did not lose his aircraft or even suffer any hits to the aircraft. What he did do was his job! In contrast--Parrish KILLED over 100 NVA by himself! He saved Moore's entire Battalion for serious losses, he saved More and the whole command staff. Parrish got a Silver Star. Crandall and Freeman got their MHs AFTER the hyped movie came out that only told HLAF the battle--there was also McDale's Battalion we don't talk about.

Just think how many people would have been lost if it took him 41years to act on what needed to be done. Wasn't there and didn't serve in country but God Bless those who did. It will be 50 years since I served. We are getting old and it's about time the country said "Welcome Home".

Just finished reading ' We were soldiers once and Young ' ' The Greatest Generation ' most certainly applies to Vietnam Vets. Watching this I couldn't help but think how times have changed. A President who acknowledges and speaks of the bravery , and sacrifice of a true hero , with respect and humor appropriate to the occasion , not about himself and using it to perpetrate more lies .

Up until 1996 there was a rule in place that stated the MOH had to be awarded within 2 years of the action. Once the rule was dropped both Crandall and Freeman were both up for consideration. Crandall didn't think that the Army would award 3 Medals from one fight so he took his own name out of contention to shed more light on Freeman. It's very strange that their actions were not recognized at the time. But order has been restored.

I met Melvin Morris yesterday @ our Airborne and Special Forces jamboree in Sebring, Florida. and spoke with him at great length. He is very down to earth and unassuming. And like me he is a liberal. Airborne!

Bruce Crandall took his own name off the table for consideration so that his wingman Ed Freeman's application would have a better chance. Ultimately the plan worked to perfection. I'm guessing it's a bit of a process

@@adamr6794 I think that's about as clear a definition of "Selflessness" you could ever ask for. My ship (USS Fox DLG-33) was on Yankee Station in 1970/71 & 1972/73, directing aircraft off the carriers in country an back out again. Air Traffic Control was our main mission. All of it was necessary to get the job done but the assignments were not nearly the same. I have the utmost respect for the people in country, on the ground or in the air.

He was going to receive it years prior, but HE himself asked that his name be withdrawn in favor of his friend, Ed "Too Tall" Freeman. But I do agree that Congress is most definitely pathetic.

Congress had nothing to do with it. There first nominations were submitted too late to be considered. There was a two year limit until 1995. That regulation was abolished in 1995 which initiated a review of numerous prior recommendations by the Medal of Honor board. Regulations are very strict on awarding of all medals, but especially the Medal of Honor. He removed his name to allow Ed Freeman a better chance of receiving the Medal.
