While serving as a sergeant with Company B of the 5th Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces, Sgt. Gary Beikirch was stationed at Dak Seang Camp, home to Montagnard villagers and fighters, in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum.
On April 1, 1970, the camp was attacked by a numerically superior North Vietnamese force. While his Montagnard assistants treated the wounded, Beikirch fought back with a 4.2 inch mortar and, after that weapon was disabled by hostile fire, a machine gun.
Learning that a fellow American soldier was wounded and lying in an exposed position, he ran through heavy fire to rescue the man. He was hit by shrapnel in the process, including one fragment which struck near his spine and partially paralyzed him. Despite being severely wounded Beikirch would continue to aid the wounded and repel the enemy attack.
For the remainder of the battle he had his Montagnard assistants carry him from one position to another as he treated the injured. He was wounded in the side while giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a Montagnard fighter and was then shot in the stomach.
For his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Richard Nixon on October 15, 1973.
Gary Beikirch passed away on December 26, 2021 at the age of 74.
Medal of Honor Citation:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sgt. Beikirch, medical aidman, Detachment B-24, Company B, distinguished himself during the defense of Camp Dak Seang. The allied defenders suffered a number of casualties as a result of an intense, devastating attack launched by the enemy from well-concealed positions surrounding the camp. Sgt. Beikirch, with complete disregard for his personal safety, moved unhesitatingly through the withering enemy fire to his fallen comrades, applied first aid to their wounds and assisted them to the medical aid station. When informed that a seriously injured American officer was lying in an exposed position, Sgt. Beikirch ran immediately through the hail of fire. Although he was wounded seriously by fragments from an exploding enemy mortar shell, Sgt. Beikirch carried the officer to a medical aid station. Ignoring his own serious injuries, Sgt. Beikirch left the relative safety of the medical bunker to search for and evacuate other men who had been injured. He was again wounded as he dragged a critically injured Vietnamese soldier to the medical bunker while simultaneously applying mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to sustain his life. Sgt. Beikirch again refused treatment and continued his search for other casualties until he collapsed. Only then did he permit himself to be treated. Sgt. Beikirch's complete devotion to the welfare of his comrades, at the risk of his life are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on him, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

"I really believe that you'll never truly lead anybody until you learn to serve, and you'll never truly serve anybody until you learn that there is something greater than yourself"- Gary Beikirch As the Lord once called Gary Beikirch into this life, Now the Lord calls him home to life everlasting. You know the medal has been given to a man of honor when he says he doesn't know why he received it. No one should go through what he, and so many others, went through upon coming home. The people who treated our veterans so poorly should really be ashamed of themselves. Thank you to Sgt. Beikirch, and all the servicemen who fought for us, may he rest in peace.

@@topgeardel this veteran was a soldier, not a politician. There are no words I can convey to you that would in any way change your thinking, so I will offer none. The guilt you carry inside you is eating you up. So much so, you hide behind a curtain of anger towards others but it's YOU yourself that is the real aim of your anger. May you come to terms with your inner unrest and find peace and understanding and solace.

Two of the places where Vietnam veterans were actually treated badly in the late 1960s and early 1970s were the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
@j.c.h7127

@@topgeardel - a lot of Vietnam vets, not all, but a lot, grew their hair long and dressed like hippies. Many of them got involved with the anti-war movement. That's a combination that did not go over very well at local Legion Halls and VFW Clubs. Americans have a very selective memory. Rambo quotes do not make for accurate history.

The 15 year old "bodyguard" story and the spine being hit by schrapnel but he kept fighting being carried around by the 15 year old didn't ring true to me. But 130 comments of believers "convinced" me to believe!
