The fact any of them survived and they weren't completely annihilated is absolutely incredible in itself considering they were going against 2 full regiments of NVA. Can't forget SGM. Plumley he was another key role in the success of the 1/7 Cav. He was an absolute badass and exactly what you imagine a Sergeant Major to be.

Hal Moore. A soldiers soldier. American Hero A Legendary Leader. In OCS 1975 I learned that a Leader does not simply direct his troops but Leads from the Front. Never says you but says WE. Troops follow by example. In order to get respect respect needs to be given and earned. Don’t ask your men to do something that you yourself won’t do.

I had a trolley tour that one of the sights was the Col Howel Moore museum. Few of his soldiers were on the tour. All of them said the exact same thing about him.

There are distinct differences between a commander and a leader. Leaders are respected. Leaders take care of their troops. Leaders set the example. They spit in the eye of death. Commanders tell others what to do. Things that they cannot, nor know how to do themselves. They curl up in a ball, and retire early, and get a job as a consultant.

Well stated It’s similar but to a lesser extreme in business. You have leaders and then you have managers. Leaders work along side of and mentor you, managers write reports and go to meetings.

Great leaders never ask their team to do anything they haven't already proven willing to do themselves. Leading by example is the most honorable form of leadership, and because of that, the most respectable.

My grandfather is the same way. He didn't get to fight with Hal but was part of the aftermath. To this day he's the first into anything and the last to step out. We built him a new deck this past summer and he laid the first board and carried the last tool to my truck. Amazing man.

Moore went to soldier to say a few words of encouragement I think after the first day of fighting. I know this from someone who was there and lived to tell. My friend carried that memory with him for the rest of his life.

Theres a guy that lives near me who was a machine gunner during this battle. He was one of the few who made it relatively unscathed. It was about 20 years ago. He showed me the book we were soldiers. Showed me his picture in it. And he gave his story and in exchange instead of compensation directly to him. They paid for his kids college tuition.

Reminds me of Brigadier General Teddy Roosevelt Jr. Led his men ashore on D-Day, walked off the Higgins boat with a .45 in one hand and his cane in another (he had been injured in WW1). When a subordinate informed him they'd landed in the wrong place, he said "We'll just start the war from right here!"
