Well the are two reasons that he could have scratched Trip's car 1: Herbie felt insulted by Trip 2: Herbie wanted Maggie to race against Trip.

Can I say something that you did point out when reviewing the 1997 movie. Herbie is know to adapt to the personality of his owner. Maggie is quite a tomboyish girl who loved causing antics here and there and used to disobey her dad by street racing. So that could explain why Herbie is so mischievous and disobedient in this movie. But just like the original with Jim. The movie ends with Maggie understanding Herbie and having a bond with him. Also with the special effects, most of them were real. There was only a few selected scenes such as when he pulls the silly face behind Trip and when he does the front flip to save Maggie from the monster truck that it’s computer generated. But the eye blinking and the doors, bonnet opening by themselves, and the antenna flick (which I think is an adult joke) were all added to several different cars for filming each scene where it was needed.

Trip Murphey is basically the humanized version of Chick Hicks. Which is funny since both this movie and "Cars" were released within a year of each other.

I watched this movie ENDLESSLY when I was a kid. Seeing it now almost 15 years later, it's held up mostly decently. Although looking back now, I definitely see the faults it has, like the idiot father and Herbie's mean-spiritedness. I still found myself grinning at all the gags, though! Yes, even the CG ones.

The father, Ray Peyton Snr (played by Michael Keaton) was actually really caring and slightly insecure, as he cared for his son and daughter and did not want them to end up like his sadly deceased wife, which is why he was so overprotective! 😢

According to IMCDB, the yellow New Beetle was a 2004 model year, and since this movie came out in 2005, that would mean that car was only 1 year old, and Herbie would have been 42 years old... no comment

My car OC was a 97 supra and was portrayed an adult, with Herbie being portrayed as middle-aged. I specifically remember saying something like "all cars reach adulthood at 8 months, regardless of being driven" on the first picture i drew.

As I recall at least one of the cars were given animatronics to show Herbie's emotions and a few of his tricks. There are still plenty of Herbie fans. I was at a WV car show a few years ago and someone had made his own Herbie and showcased one of his comic appearances. He's also one of my favorite characters and it's too bad they haven't done more with him.

ShadowWing Tronix my brother is obsessed with Herbie. To the point where his dream car is a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle. I have seen a few beetles out there that are painted like Herbie and I even got to see one in person at my dad’s work. It was awesome

Some of my favorite characters are VW Beetles, but sadly no Bumblebee there and i'm the only person who remembers Wheelie & The Chopper Bunch besides fellow old kids. :)

2 things, first off I think they actually used old fashioned practical effects as much as possible, I came across some B-roll footage recently where they were puppeteering a real car. Second, you forgot one of the coolest things about the movie, that awesome, eye candy, street racing Herbie, if I could choose any Herbie to own for myself it would be that one.

EarthThatWas the placement in the continuity of this film is hard to place. What confused me as a kid was the fact that Herbie’s old driver’s helmet had Maxx on the side which was puzzling because I don’t think Herbie ever had an owner called Max.

@@Snowfang00andco Here's what I think happened (sorry, it's long): Jim died sometime after the TV show. Not long after that, one of Jims friends (Tennessee, Wheely, either one) decided that it was time for Herbie to leave. They gave him to some random guy who started racing with him, but of course, Herbie lost all of the races and was once again passed on to another driver. Just like Maggie, Herbies new driver used the name Maxx as an allies to hide their real identity. Maxx used Herbie for illegal street racing but he eventually got bored of him and decided to leave him in a long abandoned shed (leaving his racing outfit in Herbies trunk). After a few years, Crazy Daves co-worker finds Herbie and hauls him away to the junkyard where Maggie finds him.
