Lately I've been seeing a lot of talk about media literacy, a term which many people seem to be completely misusing nowadays. Many internet users seem to have no clue what media literacy actually means, yet it is still being parroted as rationale for why one person's take on a piece of media is better than another. Alongside this, there has also been a large uptick in people being mocked for trying to be media literate, resulting in a new culture where people are made fun of for "yapping". Today, we'll be discussing media literacy, its place on the internet, various adjacent topics (death of the author, the "blue curtains" meme), and why the internet killed media literacy. #commentary #medialiteracy

I recently finished playing Resident Evil 6, which is generally held as the black sheep of the mainline Resident Evil games. I went in knowing it was controversial, but I otherwise had a 100% blind experience. I was pleasantly surprised by how much more realistic the human psychology was in that game compared to previous entries. Characters have flaws and deal with varying types of trauma. All of this was approached maturely and portrayed realistically and subtly. After playing, I did some reading on people's criticisms of that game. It almost all pertained to people not understanding a character's motivations for certain actions or why characters experienced certain emotions. Instead of taking the time to analyze why a character did what they did, they simply pinned it on bad writing. All they had to do to understand was view the situation through each character's perspective. Capcom committed the "sin" of not holding the player's hand and not outwardly telling them how a character was feeling and why. God forbid characters be nuanced and three-dimensional, otherwise players won't be able to make immediate judgements of them. Media literacy is dead, especially in video game communities. It's gotten to the point where if people say a game is "poorly written," I'm willing to bet it's not only well-written, but also the most thematically and emotionally complex installment in a franchise.

People hate the game for having too much action apparently? I don't know why they like 4 or 5 then, they're arguably even more action-packed in some scenes than 6.

Personally it depends on the level and number of retcons that pointing out may be seen as legitimate criticism. The Paul WS Anderson Resident Evil films...nothing in part 2-5 matters because it gets retcorned (the cliffhanger endings of 3,4 and 5 get retconned in the first scene of the sequel. And heck to a lesser extent not even the first film matters because in the final chapter We get the retcons to end all retcons the red queen was good the entire time and she's unable to kill umbrella employees...and she had the anti virus this whole time...and it's airborne. I'm on the spectrum (and stoned) so little things like that just irk me that I'm able to remember the lore better than the director of his own franchise. The Resident Evil movies litterally punish you for paying attention. I've never seen Beavis and Butthead but it probably does have a deeper meaning. I mean Mike Judge made Idiacracy,Office Space,King of the Hill,Silicon Valley and The Goode Family... It would be weird that that would be the only thing that he ever made.That was actually just silly fun.

I think i disagree with you on cinema sins don't get me wrong they are media( or more accurately cinema) illiterate to be honest, but not for the reasons you explained, For one i don't think pointing out plotholes on a story is that big of a deal, sure writing is about emotion, but logic is also important somewhat, the problem is only their when they make the plothole a bigger deal than it actually is ( That's the same logic for nitpicks) And for second the REAL reason why they are media( or cinema illiterate) is because THEY ARE AWFUL at pointing problems in their videos, either they take scenes out of context, expect characters to behave outside of their established characterisation, or misunderstand the point of a scene, for example in their sonic movie 2 video they criticize( or more accuretely sin) Sonic for being an immature hero even tho in the context of these movies he is only 13 or 15 at best so extremely so he is bound to make terrible mistakes has a hero, and the whole point of the movie is him maturing , you could say i could bring another example, but dude they do all the things i mentionned in this sin, they think sonic should behave like a responsible hero even tho he is Young, they take the scene out of the context since this is the beginning of Sonic's character arc, they misunderstand the scene, since it is supposed to be set up for Sonic maturing. Anyways sorry for yapping so much lol😅(I can get carried away) my point is that you should have said that cinema sins are media illiterate because of their inability to critisize and general imcompetence , not what they are critizing since wgat tehy are critising under the right circumstances is rather tame. Anyways bye.

6:50 Actually, no. It was originally a way for Marvel writers to no longer have to come up with origin stories. The run of comics that made the Xmen popular did really lean into that as an allegory, however. So no, but sort of yes. It's complicated. Also people who call things "woke" and "man hating." Do so because they consider those to be the bigoted forms of media. You can disagree with there politics as much as you want. But they didn't misunderstand the applicability of the story. They just think it applies to a different group of people than you.

Whenever I see something super long I ignore it for a term a call the yapping meter. Wanna talk about a show for 1000 words? Fine by me I won't read it because my meter is drained after a certain word count just like whoever will read this. Media literacy isn't dead by any means. Just don't expect the general public to care. Also I honestly prefer watching fight scenes over the show out of respect for those who make them. Those tend to have more quality, especially from Japan, than the story.

Let’s see how good am I in media literacy I’ll use hazbin hotel the series is supposed to be complex morally gray story about redemption but in actuality the show is told as black & white as possible where the main character nor the creator doesn’t know what & how redemption work because she skips the most important of what makes redemption along with making the main villain correct the story & setting are fighting each other
