Part of the problem is that bass waves are "bigger" than higher frequencies so cutting off the top would actually help, or at least removing the acoustical foam. Remember that being in front of the box during recording also blocks sound pressure and contributes to the boxy effect. Experiment with the distance you are from the mic, and you may also find that that will help.

The testing was very well done ! It helped convince me of the potential of such a build. I intend to record book readings for a local audio librabry project (for people unable to read) and I will probably build a similar device ! :-) However, I would recommend the video from diy perks about the comparative performances of various cheap sound insulating materials. It appears that stacked towels (shower towels that is) are hugely better than usual insulating foam. So I think I'll build a similar booth, only with towels from the local charity store instead of foam.

I found a link to your video on Amazon while considering the purchase of the ridiculously under-priced Blue Yeti microphone with built-in A/D converter to make it USB compatible. I'm listening at 6:00 AM through a pair of Etymotic Research earbuds, which reveal very subtle differences in sound quality. In terms of relating to your voice and image in this video over all, I slightly prefer the sound of your lavaliere mic, even though it is much noisier, because in the right location the ambience contextualizes your presentation for me, and perhaps because you are just more relaxed when you're not facing the mic. Of course, one doesn't always want that much audio information in a recording or even a conversation. The portable soundbooth you created is brilliant. Not to state the obvious, but it might be better if you raised it up so you wouldn't have to lean forward and down to use it. I would love to hear a sample clip with your mouth at various distances from the mic (including much closer to the pop filter, almost touching it) for comparison's sake. You have a wonderful, confident and reassuring voice. When I was your age, I did a couple of commercials and some voice-over for local TV and radio stations, and I can say with confidence that you've got the goods if you ever want to go that route. You probably won't get paid for it (at least at first), but it's quite fun. Thank you for showing me and your 70,000 other viewers how to construct an inexpensive and portable sound booth. I truly appreciate it.

Mark Hubbard Hi Mark. First of all, thank you for watching my video and leaving me a nice constructive, interesting message. The lav mic is very noisy and the cable is really long which makes it annoying to use, but mainly the noise from the lav mic really puts me off personally hence why I wanted to explore the sound booth and the purchase of the Yeti mic in the first place but then I found that the Yeti would pick up lots of background sound (not from the mic itself). I would like to do more comparison if I had the time, but unfortunately at the moment video production has been slow due to real-life work commitments. I'm shocked that you think my voice is suitable for VO stuff, I personally find my voice rather annoying and strange even though I have to listen to it day in and out when I'm editing my own videos lol. Brilliant video. I happened to have an ikea box sitting in my office, and some egg crate foam in the garage. I had a "box" like your built within 5 minutes of watching your video, and got similar stellar results (also using a Blue Yeti.) If you don't have a pop filter, you can also just drape a t-shirt over the front of the box, and it'll cut your pops and hisses. For those making this, a utility knife also works great to cut the foam if you don't have a bread knife. I think I agree that there's a lot more bass that comes with this solution. I can see times where that's a fit and times where it isn't. I also found, that even with this on my desk, my laptop hard drive and fan (running Audacity) were still giving enough vibration that my mic was picking it up. Had to leave them on a separate table. I found that putting my script on a stand behind the box worked well, as I could still reach and see it, but it kept me facing the mic. Thanks again for the shared ingenuity.

What are your tips for using this? I made the box exactly the same way but it sounds really bassy. Where should the mic be and where should I talk from?

That's one side effect for using a small box. using a larger box, speaking slightly further away from the mic and tweaking the EQ audio with software can reduce some of the bass, also depends what mic you are using as well. Some mics are naturally more bassy.

Hamaji Neo Only way is to speak less close to the mic and if that doesn't help, use software (EQ) to lower the bass in your recording if the mic itself is very bass heavy. The box does emphasise this even more being in a compact space. There's not too much room for the sound to escape to.

What is the application? Is it live voice, voice over (I am guessing not since they like it bassy) or music? If it is music, I always roll off 100hz to 150hz, gone, cya, out of there. So I will roll off guitars at 120 then the vocal at 110 or 130, depends on the singer and such. But 100 to 150 on down, can be gone. If your box has to be this size, this box is pretty dang small. Put your mic all the way back, mount a pop filter to the box, and get some more distance. Or, if you can't do the above, add some bass ports in it. They are dirt cheap to buy, or you can make them out of pvc. Bass ports on a small box will do wonders. Or use a much bigger box. More distance with a pop filter. Roll off 100 to 150hz on EQ, and sometimes I like to boost it right before the roll off.

+Media6D Haha, I never would have thought of it, at least not like that. I had some foam insulation left over from a shed build, and just used that. Its not high grade audiophile grade foam, but I figured it would get rid of the reverb and focus the sound. It sure did! Its not as pretty either, but I have a lid that went with it. Sounds better without the booth imo! Both on Beyer dt770 headphones and speakers in my treated room. More calm, more intelligible, less boxy and low mid build up. The computer noise doesn't bother me that much.

You reckon? On a 2.1 speaker system, the computer vibration is quite prominent in the bass. I could cut out the frequencies in post production, but more work involved.

If you use 12" Auralex "wedge" squares, you don't need to do any cutting. And then you can folding up the box, and restock the wedge squares for travel and mobile use. And use one square on the table in front, to minimize surface reflections!

Actually, when the mic is out of the box the voice sounds more natural. Into the box the voice has a lot of bass which is not natural at all. The buzz noise from the computer can be completely removed if you put a towel under the mic.

Thanks for the tip, it is possible to tweak the recording in post to remove some of the bass though. Depends if you or the user prefers to have a bass-heavier sound. But you are right, it sounds more balanced when its not inside the box, or if you used a bigger box. Thanks for watching and the tip!

Rather inside. When singing vocals you don't want much of an interference or background noise, so the soundbooth fits well to get a more clean vocal.

Most the high frequency when recording outside is reflected. When you are in the sound booth, the high frequency are no longer reflected which gives it the appearance of having more bass.

it blocks the sound of technologic devices that are running and it does pretty well. but as it clears your voice it will kind of change the tone of the voice. i tried it. still amazing for music.

So I end up getting my blue yeti yesterday and the same box you have (& same color lol) with paddings and let me tell you it sounds really good it locks in the sound which I like it gives my voice more bass but I just turn it down on my recording software (mixcraft 8) but man I appreciate it a lot man it's worth every penny I spent

Sounded great! I think I will try something like this too, though I may use a larger storage container such as they 21 gallon one used by the Canadian guy, but I like the acoustical foam that you used better...and I liked his idea of using the Elmer's spray adhesive to secure it to the sides.

Sounds great. You can stick it down, but after more than a year of using it. None of the phone has fallen out or sagged. So I'm okay without using any adhesive :)
