I hate to say it, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences does have a public way of letting its biases known. One of the more egregious "snubs" (hello, Ben Affleck?) was their not including Leonardo DiCaprio in its list for Best Supporting Actor for his memorable performance in DJANGO UNCHAINED. No slight to the men who earned their nominations, including equally deserving DJANGO co-star Christoph Waltz, but all five contenders are previous winners. Can we spread the Oscar wealth around, people? Perhaps the 2012 film year was an embarrassment of riches after all.
DiCaprio has never been better as plantation owner Calvin Candie. A wicked statement on the less than capable progeny of the rich, DiCaprio all but shredded his matinee idol charm by offering a malicious and dark turn on a dime. It really is a career peak for the actor, which bodes well for the heavy lifting to come in Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" later this year.
Find out what had DiCaprio unchained as the fearsome owner of Candieland now in this interview playing on The MediaJor Channel.
Nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz) and Best Original Screenplay (Quentin Tarantino), DJANGO UNCHAINED is now playing citywide.
