@@lynxfirenze4994 not to get theological here, but if someone says they’re a Christian and is “going to the beat of our drum” they’re usually not really a Christian and just like the label of being a Christian. I know what you mean though, those types of people (even though they may not actually be Christian) can still have power over the Christian faith and have some influence in it. Which sucks because then non-Christian’s look at those people and think that we’re all bad, and I wouldn’t blame them for thinking that because they get all the attention, all the publicity.

@@Dasan28 you might be right, but likewise that falls extremely close to the "No True Christian" problem wherein anyone can be dismissed as not being a real Christian because they don't follow X doctrine/express certain views etcetera. The bible is such a huge and frequently self contradictory set of books that justification can be found for basically any view you care to express.

It is if you use deductive reasoning. Luke 7:38 says a harlot was at Jesus' feet. Luke 10:39 says Mary was a woman at Jesus' feet. So, by the transitive property, Mary Magdalene was the harlot at Jesus' feet. You see that throughout the Bible. Another example is Moses being the Egyptian who saved the daughters of Jethro. It never says that Moses is the Egyptian but transitively, we know that he is.

The woman in Luke 7:38 is a "sinful woman" who isn't identified with either Mary Magdalene or Mary of Bethany. The former had seven demons driven out of her by Jesus. (And the sinful woman anointing Jesus happens at a completely different location three chapters earlier.

One of the biggest disservices that Adult Swim was can this show early, I would have loved to see how Orel went from a kid raised in a "religious" hellscape to a man that had it all made and apparently still was in the faith, we get glimpses of how like in the episode where he used buddhist philosophy to find "spiritual enlightenment", but that was surface-level compared to the real demons he probably had to face to get to what he became as an adult.

About Mary Magdalene, the matter of her being a prostitute is still debatable. We're still trying to figure out if her and Mary Of Bethany are the same person. Meanwhile, with the subject on the children suffering from the toxic beliefs, it makes me wonder about the End Of Times verses about the children dishonouring their families and being rebellious. Would it be because they were spoiled growing up or would it really be the abuse they had faced by their families (would the parents be as innocent and righteous to begin with?)? Or would it be both?

I grew up in a similar situation, not a school but my family's life was church, whether we liked it or not. And my church, or at least the ward I was apart of, very much operated in the manor of the citizens of Moralton. It was rare for me to come across another member that wasn't preoccupied with building up their image to hide their hypocrisy, or trying to "save" me. The only people I enjoyed being around were other people like you, though they were rare to come by. People who were willing to have discussions and question different aspects of religion and see the good, bad, and the ugly that is apart of any theism or lack thereof. On the flip side of that, mostly being around people with the attitudes and values like the citizens of Moralton, didn't only push me away, but it instilled a fear of Christianity in me for many years, and it was so bad that I couldn't hear a bible verse without checking out completely and going back to the darkest memories I had of that time. I'm in a better place now and obviously I can listen to quotes from the bible without my fear clouding my ability to hear the wisdom in the words, and it is because of Christians like yourself. It's amazing how so much damage can be done so quickly and how long it can take to heal. Though I'm not religious I liked that Oral still kept his faith in the end. It meant something to him, living those values meant something to him. Thanks for covering the series so comprehensively and fairly.

The best way ive seen this part of the gospel presented (and it is important) is to use the law as what its meant to be used for, not something for condemnation, but rather a mirror to display where you stand. As in, "here is the standard for people who can make their own way into heaven. Notice how you do not meet this standard. Here is the solution, a relationship with Jesus Christ." Of course the relationship with Jesus is important, but less about avoiding hell and its more about, hey look what Jesus did for you, he paid that price. He took on the debt that you have due to your works not living up to this standard, he did, and yet he took that punishment upon himself. I had decided to focus on the Bible and build my foundation first. Everything in this, is how I am feeling. I will continue to focus on my own path and faith. Great video with well placed and relevant scriptures. I too grew up in a very strict judgmental church setting and went to a conservative Christian college and nearly lost my faith. The great thing is God would not let me go so I returned to my faith and am always working to fight dogma whenever I see it. Moral Orel was never a good fit for adult swim. At least not at the time it aired. Most of Adult Swim's viewership has never even seen, or even heard of the show it's parodying. When's the last time anybody has talked about that old show? Kids have no idea what I'm show I'm even referring to. Adult Swim has changed its identity, and reinvented itself more tines than Modonna. To the point where even the OG Adult Swim programming like The Brak Show and Sealab 2021 no longer fit the current Adult Swim brand. Netflix at the time, was still doing DVDs by mail. (Which was the superior netflix.) But had Orel come out today, it would've been a good fit for Netflix's current branding. Because there is no strong Netflix brand. Thats nobody has any real connection to Netflix, the way 90s kids have to Nickelodeon.

For Muslims, this is where Muhammad ascended to heaven. And the Christians did often use their religion to justify the amount of harm they committed towards their enemies. They pretty much made them out to be monsters, not realizing that there were aspects of the Old Testament that Muslims applied to their faith too. They wanted power, and were willing to do anything to gain it.

And, both groups believed in one God (even though it wasn’t in the same way).

Not only did the knights do things that went against their supposedly “Christian” values, but many of the horrible actions committed against the Muslims were done by them as justification for their faith (as well as their desire for power). The Crusades were originally supposed to be predominantly defensive campaigns that were in response to centuries of Islamic enslavement, dhimmitude, and general crimes against humanity. Originally, the first few crusades were called by the Byzantine Empire in order to defend against encroaching Islamic forces which threatened the existence of non-Islamic peoples. The thought was that after driving out the Islamic governments, places like Byzantium and Egypt would be able to regain the territories that they had lost, but the Crusaders ended up just forming their own independent states in their conquered territories. Pope Urban II also declared that he would pardon the past and present sins of all those who joined in the Crusades in Levant and Spain- which likely gave justification for unjustified killings in areas which were targeted by Crusaders. This became the precedent for later crusades as well. Other Crusades of questionable justification included the 4th Crusade against Byzantium and the Crusade against the Cathars, a heretical pseudo-Gnostic group. Make of that information what you will. I personally think the only unjustifiable Crusades were the 4th and those against Heretics. Those meant to fight against Islamic encroachment were justified in their intentions but unfortunately were mostly botched in their execution (except for Spain).

I'm 24 years and have been raised in a roman catholic house. I've always had a complicated relationship with religion in general even most of the people in my life are christians. A major reason is because I'm a queer person, non-binary and pansexual. I still live with my family and I'm still in the closet (except with my sister who doesn't live here anymore) and I just always feel stuck. Like I won't accepted or understood by my family. Or they'll try to convince me that my identity is isn't real. I'm not gonna vent about my whole life story in the comments on a KZbin video so I'll try to sum it up. I don't feel comfortable with christianity/catholicism because it doesn't seem or feel welcoming to members of the LGBTQ+ community like myself. I know there are christians who are welcoming but I never got that sense from where I live. Not to say they are bigoted but it's pretty much a 50/50 chance and I don't know if I want to risk it.

I don’t intend to start an argument or anything i just have this pondering I’ve never been able to really get a satisfying answer as someone who used to believe but now doesn’t. The argument about ‘lukewarm’ Christians always struck me as a bit at odds with the rest of doctrine, even if doctrine was and is unclear. On paper all you need to do is profess a genuine desire to accept Jesus, and then you’re good. But then later in the Bible there comes this revelation that you need more than just this, even though Jesus himself seemed pretty clear on it just being a profession of faith. I know church leaders do say point to the verses about lukewarm and all, but that doesn’t really satisfy me, and didn’t satisfy me either as a Christian. After all, sure it’s good if someone turns their life around, but if in the end all they do is profess a desire to be saved and accept Jesus, ideally that makes them no different than someone who did the same but did all they could. Apologies for the ramble, admittedly sparked this thought when you mentioned something like this earlier in the video. Am interested to hear what other people think, as even if I’m no longer a Christian i always enjoy discussing theology.

It’s like he says in the video. Declaring doesn’t mean anything. I could say that I’m a big fan of country music all I want, but if I never actually listen to it, or know anything about it, and I’m reluctant to do anything about it, then I’m not really a fan. Salvation is not earned by saying a prayer and then being done. Salvation is earned by having legitimate friendship and relationship with God. The friend analogy he used in the video is exactly how it works.

However I still don’t know if it really lines up with the words of Jesus, and that’s not even getting into the arguments on whether or not you can be saved and retain that grace if you deconvert. To be more specific tho, I think the analogy is fine. It isn’t even a bad one. But, and not to sound like an internet atheist, but I don’t think it really squares with the consequences. If you are a bad friend, you lose a friend. No biggie. If you don’t be a good friend to Yawheh, at BEST you’re condemned to an eternity separate from him, without any detail on what that means. At worst, it’s an eternity of torment. I just… Well, for one, I just never really could myself as a Christian square the idea of Hell as a real place with the character of Yawheh that I was taught. That being an omnibenevolent, omnipresent, omnipotent being who wants all to come to him. So like, I dunno. I think the analogy works on a surface level, it just doesn’t really work if you get into the theology.

Here's a dude that, when He was alive in body, gravitated towards what people referred to as "rif-raf, "undesirables" and worse. He taught them to love themselves. And He never judged them. That is Jesus, no judgment, lead by quiet example. So, Jesus never said a word against Gay people. Not one word. He just wants us to respect ourselves. When He found true evil, He vanquished it. He didn't run around with flowing hair and sandals on flipping peace signs and saying "turn the other cheek" because He wants you to take a bunch of abuse. No. He says that because He doesn't want your time, energy and spirit depleted so you're at zero when something really important happens. There can be dinosaurs, there can be evolution, there can be life on other planets. That doesn't mean there is no God. And science? Oh you mean those people who can't create anything, just write it down? That just makes them secretaries. God put all this in motion. God created all. Jesus lives on after thousands of years because when people are ready, it has the ring of truth, and you feel the love. He won't knock forever, He is not a stalker, but He will be there when you are ready to accept. "For everything there is a season..."

Before we receive salvation, our nature is one of sin. We are slaves to sin, so we don’t willingly sin. When we receive salvation though, we also receive the Holy Spirit, the person of God that guides us and convicts us to cleanse ourselves of sin. This is a process called sanctification. If we don’t listen to the Holy Spirit and go against its will, it’s considered blasphemy, and this is what Jesus talked about being the unforgivable sin.

Our culture celebrates and pushes things that go against the Christian ethic relentlessly things like fornication and homosexuality. Again I don’t live by the Christian ethic so I find nothing wrong with these things, but feel sorry for people who do and are constantly bombarded with these messages

If your god is perfect, all knowing & all powerful, then he knows who will sin against him before he even creates them, because he knows every outcome. He created hell knowing who (he knowingly created) would go there. Your god is powerful enough to save everyone from the hell he created, but willingly doesn't intercept in the name of "free will" except the time he hardened a pharaoh's heart who wanted to set his slaves free, but your god wanted the pharaoh to keep the slaves to beat and sexually assault. Praise your god & send me the money!

Wars and genocides can be caused for other secular reasons. At least 7 million under Hitler, 10 million under Stalin, and 40 million under Zedong were killed for the purpose of utopia. And what’s happening in Palestine isn’t because of Christianity, it’s a jumbled mess of Jews, Arab Muslims and dispensationalists.
