It would have been much more interesting to have the Kankers as the mirrored versions of the eds but like. The eds do their elaborate scams to get their jawbreakers, the (rewritten) kankers just rough characters up and take their quarters. Compared to the eds the kankers are all brawn and no brain and it's the eds cooperation that gets them outta trouble and in it. OR We saw a glimpse of the kankers ingenuity in that "haunted house" episode where they built that odd contraction/ride JUST to marry the eds. So what if the eds and Kankers are rivals, the kanker sisters having scams similar to theirs. Using the lovey dovey kissy act to scare and bully the eds because they're still in the "ew girls" phase. Having their character traits mirrored to "their" ed to almost cause some insecurity. (ex: Marie being smarter than double d while being cooler,collected and confident. Lee being taller than eddy, having better hair and much more clever and street smart and even fooling him sometimes. May more so knows more sci-fi and monster trivia and maybe even has better figurines/comics than Ed)

This take seems a little short sighted in my opinion. As is while it's easy to have the stance of "story is what matters most in a character-driven series" the thing with Ed, Edd 'n Eddy is it's not JUST a character driven series with decent story. It's also a chaotic slapstick comedy. The Kankers are an element that come from the latter more than the former because they were intentionally based off of Danny's experiences growing up. Growing up there ARE people who just sporadically appear and give you nothing but bad memories. They are intentionally characters who aren't that deep because they are meant to be remembered more as villains than characters. This is because they help emphasize that while indeed The Eds are kids who scam the other neighbors, they never are actively hated or attacked (save for My Fair Ed which just, half-asses that concept) because in some ways they actually do make the Cul-De-Sac more interesting, and aren't violent bullies that enjoy forcing kids to eat bugs or get in fights. Because of the Kankers it's more believable that the Eds have done what they do for so long without major reprecussion. Not to mention, for the Kankers to NOT be grouped in as a specific flavor of foil, that in my opinion makes them stronger characters. Compared to say, The Rowdyruff Boys who are popular but are just a bunch of juvenile, anti-feminine punks, they actually serve specific purposes. Eddy leads the Eds while Lee bosses around her sisters. Ed is blissfully unaware of everything around him because of his low intelligence, May is blissful about what makes her happy in spite of her intelligence being constantly berated by her sisters. Double Dee is always collaborating with the other Eds and keeping order, while Marie is always most likely to fight Lee and intentionally seeks disorder, to the point where she flirts and teases the most neurotic, orderly mess of the Eds. As is I understand this take and don't blame anyone for having it. To me though, useless characters don't create a resounding response in the fanbase to the point that numerous fanworks actively produce content that feature characters like this. On DeviantArt alone there's nearly 16k fanworks that feature the Kankers compared to the 40.5k fanworks of EEnE as a whole. That's nearly 40% of all of the EEnE fanworks on the site! To me, it just feels a bit unfair to judge them on this sort of standard of writing when a character like Jonny who is all sorts of beloved serves arguably less purpose as a weird non-sequitor kid when, Ed pretty much is just that. There really isn't a lot of focus on Jonny in episodes, and when there is they tend to treat him as just as much of a plot device as the Kankers. All in all not a bad video just, I can't help but feel that it's missing something when it comes to focusing on these characters.

To be blunt, the Kanker Sisters are the wh*t* tr*sh antagonists and foils to the rest of the suburban middle-class protagonists. They live in a crappy trailer with a single mom who is heavily implied to sleep around (The first episode with the Kankers has them mirroring their mother's relationships with men through the Eds and confirms each sister has a different dad). Btw after the episode where Ed’s finger got stuck in the kanker sisters bottle causing them to wreck havoc on the culdesac is a perfect example of why the other characters stay away just like Season 1 of the scams were problematic enough that the other kids could’ve hated them for the rest of the series for that and it would’ve been justified. 9:00 a strong rewrite for this episode could easily have been as suggested, with each of the eds having to do something embarrassing or humiliating for the kids of the cul-de-sac to ensure they have homeroom (or a specific class) together. With the twist being just when all three are about to give up in their task the cul-de-sac character agrees last second and very easily, with the kicker being at the end (staying in line with how the kankers are used in the show at the time) its revealed their other 3 homeroom classmates are the Kanker sisters themselves. Fade out to the eds screaming and running for the door or something. Then later in the season we see the consequences of this as the eds are being forced to interact with the kankers more and then we get some proper development and get some last minute clarification if they're just bullies or love interests or something else.

Of the three Antagonistic characters in EENE (Sarah, Kevin and the Kankers) I feel the Kankers are fundamentally the weakest. Like at least Kevin and Sarah do have a reason for why they’re actively antagonistic towards the Ed’s, the Ed’s aren’t innocent souls towards them and even then Kevin (and to a lesser extent Sarah) do tolerate Double D whenever he’s not with Eddy and Ed. The Kankers don’t exactly have a justification for going after the Ed’s outside of their stalker crush on them, and considering how they were raised it’s kind of an excuse, but it doesn’t justify their actions like Eddy’s excuse does. Personally outside of May and Ed (Since of the three she feels the most genuine of them about her crush), I can’t see Lee and Marie getting with Eddy and Edd, for Eddy it would be a heavily one sided relationship sort of like Eddy’s relationship with his brother, there’s also the fact in a deleted scene of Eddy’s nightmare in Take this Ed and Shove it, the one thing that makes Eddy want to desperately want to wake up is the reveal of his marriage to Lee. Then there’s Double D, Marie is extremely clingy and jealous whenever Double D is near another girl, even her own sister, and Double D isn’t stupid enough to let bygones be bygones so Marie can get her happy ending. I do think the Kankers could be written well, in particular May and Lee, May being the nicest and surprisingly intelligent while Lee essentially has to be the team mom of her frankly very dysfunctional family is a neat idea for them, but I feel any potential they could have was quickly flushed down the toilet for Kanker esque Machina endings.
@santiagoarrieta21756 ай бұрын
I think they could play parallels with the Edd's but with the opposite outcome. both trios belong to dysfuncional families, with neglecfull. But while the Edd's really value each other and confronted with the real possibility of lost their friendship(as we see in the movie) they straight up and confront each other and improve, in the end being a good thing. Thay could have play the opposite with the Krankers, in special with Mai intended development, they little by little separate from each other(causing more trouble in the process )as more than enjoy each other company, they are together simply because they are family and live in the same, purely by habit. Could simply play that the rest of the cast become better at dealing with them over time and they start to blame each other.
@smashers69716 ай бұрын
@@santiagoarrieta2175 Honestly May is sort of more of a parallel to Double D than Ed imo. As I commented on the Double D video his main issue in the show is his toxic friendship with Ed and Eddy, he would be a normal friend of the Cul De Sac if he didn’t keep clinging to them, heck even his parents (Who do care about him) don’t really like his friendship with Ed and Eddy. May is in a similar boat, it’s implied she has genuine talent and smarts but it’s being held back by her sisters either bullying her or just having her go along with their antics. Unlike Lee who seems to just mess with Eddy and Marie who has an unhealthy obsession with Double D, May genuinely loves Ed, probably because she wants someone who be nice to her back. I feel like if any of the Kankers befriended the Cul De Sac kids it would be May no questions asked.

I feel like one potential solution would be to have them lose just a few more times over the series. You can't risk it happening too much because then the characters and the audience wouldn't take them as seriously and it would start to diminish the satisfaction you'd get from watching them lose in existing episodes like A Fistful of Ed but it's one possible solution to not make them as predictable. But let's be real, some of the best moments in the series are when the Eds are willing to get on their level and fight them. A Fistful of Ed is one when Eddy scares them off in one of his best shouting fits ever but remember Hanky Panky Hullabaloo? Remember when Ed and Eddy actually fought them over Double D? Sure, they still ended up on the backfoot but it shows a lot of growth on their part. Growth that's only manifesting because of the Kankers and their history with them.

I really related to them because when I was in middle school I had these two girls who "liked me", they were always known for being gross, vulgar, and obnoxious. I was a super softspoken shy person who hated any attention. They could not help but interact with me whenever I was in their line of sight, forcing themselves upon me with hugs and "cuddles" and forcing me to hold their hand or receive their kisses. They seemed to find great joy and amusement at how uncomfortable they could make me. They would do it in front of other people and it became a regular joke to the rest of the class that I was their "boyfriend". People found them equally repulsive and unsettling and I was always associated with them when they came up and was teased frequently cause of it. When I complained to the teachers they mostly found it funny like "awww young love" or just telling me that it was just a crush. I think an episode about Marie Kanker being kicked out or running away where Double finds her and tries to talk her out of it trying to preach the good of family gets pushed into a corner when Marie gives him all the evidence that her family doesn't hold her best interest at heart. Coming to the conclusion that in Marie's case your friends are a better family and they could have a serious heart to heart that although the6 may not get along he would be her friend and it could stay between them. It could be a sincere episode while still having all the slapstick the show is known for but I could see it being a fan favorite episode. Just a rough idea and a pretty good lesson that I think kids at the time and even now could find comfort in. Sometimes family sucks.

While I agree that the Kankers are an issue, I do think there is an interesting way you can use them. You mentioned that in "Ed Overboard", May was pushed over the edge by Lee and Marie. What if May did that to both of her sisters, and they only joined in because Lee wanted them to? That would indeed lead to an interesting dynamic with the other characters while showing that they do have an interesting parallel to the Eds. Which would be: while the Eds' masks don't slip until the movie, the Kankers' masks would slip constantly. Because their not being a good exaggeration of the Eds would be intentional. That could show an interesting sort of parallel where we see that the boys are better relationships with each other due to having respect for one another and having each other's back while Lee only bosses her sisters around and has respect for absolutely no one. Here's another idea. What if, instead of having the Kankers be a Deus Ex Machina, they can be used as a last resort every once in a while. Perhaps, the Eds have run out of options when in a particular situation and they willingly go to the Kankers for help - but with a price (say, sharing half of their jawbreakers or something). This can only work if the writers used if they were ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY and were able to do something no one in the rest of the cast could. As the series goes on, you would see that the sisters would mellow out and have a more positive interaction with the rest of the cast. I'd even say that Marie could use a definite overhaul that better feeds into the Kankers being broken parallels. What if she's a total geek like Double D, OCD and all? That would drive her further over the edge when Lee keeps pushing her ands May around like that. She and Double D would form a close platonic friendship, while hinting that a relationship is possible. Maybe in the movie, May and Marie would stand up to Lee and force her to confront the fact that she pushed her own insecurities onto them. That could match how Double D stood up to Eddy on how they got into their current predicament. I'd say the right way to use the Kankers is to have them parallel the Eds in a way that shows what would happen if the Eds completely let their insecurities consume them to the point that they become bullies, as well as turning their relationship with one another toxic. Sure, it's too late to think about that now and a reboot probably won't fix much, but it's still something to consider. Love the video, though, Trevor. Keep up the good work!

I gotta personal head canon that each Kanker shares a father with one of the Eds, actually making them their half sisters!!!...So Lee & Ed would be siblings, same thing with Marie & Eddy, and also with May & Double D (which admittedly makes the Valentines special very awkward) but you can't deny the similarities between these pairings...I can see this being their true motivation behind tormenting the boys

While the Kankers were mainly intended to be the chaotic force that thwarted the eds, THERE have been several occasions where they weren't just third act write offs. The episodes where the episodes actually revolved around them in particular in later episodes did actually show a bit more than just fodder for the eds. Mainly with Run for your Ed and the Valentines special, Even in the big picture show they actually did show despite the fact that they've tormented the Eds through the whole series they did care for them in their own twisted way by the time Eddy's Brother had his big reveal in being an absolute prick toward Eddy when he was straight up running to him. And it's not like there haven't been interactions between them and some of the other characters. I mean hell, the episode where Jimmy framed the eds and actually went out of his way to make a deal with them for the sake of revenge did show that they're willing to work with the other characters of the show if something is actually in it for them. They may have not been the best antagonists but I would argue that they aren't exactly as nearly as useless as Nazz, whom really was just there being the one every guy on the block had a crush on only to end up following whatever the rest of the kids were doing as opposed to being a role model in later seasons which, struck me as odd.
@WinterFlowerSakura6 ай бұрын
I have to agree on your third paragraph what you said about Nazz which she is the most useless character in the entire show with no personality or character development and not alot of episodes for her in any spotlight. She was a little bit ok character I like about her when she kiss Double D on the side of the cheek in that one episode " The Day The Ed Stood Still " and she was the only one person willing to take Double D back to her home place to take a shower in the" The Cleanliness of Edness" and "May I have this Ed " that she dance with Double D. But the writers made Nazz look bad and being a hypocrite being with siding with the bad group of two or three characters Kevin, Sarah and Jimmy which the writers made her side way too much on Kevin's side playing as the bad character role. That good character role was wasted on Nazz's character.
@dioshiba60666 ай бұрын
@@WinterFlowerSakura Well that's where I don't really see the entire cast as being "bad" per say. At the end of the day when you really look at Ed, Edd n' Eddy objectively no one is really an innocent character. Which is one of the more admirable qualities of the writing in the show. But that is the exact thing with Nazz. She just was there for the most part with a few moments. Had we lived in a perfect world where not only Cartoon Network gave twice the budget for the team to not just do the movie but also with a fully fledged season 6 I wonder if they'd actually give more development to her and the Kankers in that respect.

I've always saw the kankers as the true "bullies" while most of the other kids can be antagonistic towards the edds it's usually as a response to the edds antics but the kankers are harassing them without any reason showing you that the other kids aren't so bad after all compared to the sisters but the main issue is. The kankers are having a twisted soft spot for the edds even capturing the kids in the movie for their sake which is endlessly confusing are they bullies? They hinted at daddy issues & maybe that's made them love the edds but in a toxic way but that also feels strange because sometimes they harasse them with no emotional motive whatsoever but instead comes up as pure malice so yeah. The kanker sisters are a mess with contradictory motivations & roles

Marie was my favorite of the Kankers, though mainly because I was attracted to her as a kid as I had a thing for punk and goth characters (and still do). Otherwise, yeah didn't care much for them as a whole. That said, while I agree with a lot of the points brought up here (like them being used too much as an 'easy out' which even as a kid bugged me), I still preferred them over the likes of Kevin & Sarah as they often bugged me more, likely because they also appeared more whereas sometimes two or three episodes would go by without the Kankers being present.

If i had to pick one other gripe i have about the Kankers, is they pretty much actively go against one of the main appeals of the show to me This is a comedy show where absolutely ANYONE can get trounced and pummeled at any moment, regardless of their innocence in the given scenario, including the supposed powerhouses like Kevin, Sarah, and Rolf ….and then you get the Kankers, who only get beat up by other Kankers, and Double D that one time.
@LovelyTekki6 ай бұрын
Fusionfall humanized the Kanker sisters at least a little bit. If the player chooses to do their quests, the plumbers comment that it was "nice of you to help them", which makes them seem more like weird and misunderstood loners than the absolute menaces they are in the actual show. It's not much, and it's probably for the best that they didn't play a huge role in the game considering their general unpopularity, but I thought it was nice.
