Sometimes, when I work on VFX, I use this plugin to quickly remove details that are over semi-flat surfaces like texts on a flat-collored wall for example. It even works when the details are on top of a gradient like a logo on a product box.

I was going to say the same thing! Sometimes it's just the tool for the job - especially for what you mentioned about gradients / moving shadows. Track / Animate a quick mask + Median +some grain/noise, and you just removed some text without having to do any 3d tracking + painting clean frames etc. It can be surprisingly slow to render though, and produced very different results when at lower than full res.

The real reason why they introduced a 'new' version of the median wasn't to have it 32bpc that is just a bonus effect the truth is that the old median rendered really fast in 8bpc but took forever in 16 or 32bpc. And this is an effect used a lot for beauty and vfx clean ups...

Nice tutorial. Just wondering if you guys can recommend a laptop for a smooth after effects / motion designs playback and fast render. I want to learn after effects and I need a machine to use for motion graphics and probably 3D. I'm thinking of getting the new 16in M1 Max MacBook. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

Мне нравится какой Jake скромный, он столько всего умеет, но даже его интро скромное 😊

Hi! Thanks for amazing content! Good luck w your new job. I’m curious, is there an expression to have a child layer follow its parent, but with a set time delay? Cheers!

Thank you! And yes, research the valueAtTime expression.

So I'm a bit confused. I'm aware that After Effects is commonly used for mograph & vfx, but in a lot of your tutorials, you use photos as examples. Is this simply out of convenience or is this also a common tool for photo editing? Is there a reason you wouldn't just use photoshop instead? Anyways, I really appreciate the work you're doing!

He is currently going through and explaining each effect in After Effects. This is pure speculation, but since he is going through what effects do and not giving a tutorial on how to make a specific graphic or vfx, I believe the motive for a photo is a) less preview render time, b) many effects do the same thing to photos as video and c) this series is again, just to show what the effects do so a photo would be the easiest and most convenient way to showcase that. AE has different effects than Photoshop so it would not be prudent to do this tutorial in Photoshop. Photoshop is for editing photos, AE is for motion graphics and vfx (which may include photos but for video purposes.)

Yep, exactly. I use photos because I can get high quality images for free through unsplash, and almost everything I show on a photo applies to video as well.

Next will be Venetian Blinds? It is the last transition you didn't explain, Jake.
