On November, J.R. Duren’s wife gave birth to their son. Concerned about a possible infection, doctors monitored the newborn in the neonatal intensive care unit. After four hours, he was declared well enough to return to a regular hospital room, where new baby and mother stayed two more nights.
Yet when Duren received the bill, he was shocked. Not only had the hospital charged $55 for saline spray that his wife never received, but his son had been billed nearly $3,500 for one night in NICU and an additional $2,226 for another night’s stay in a regular hospital room.

The kind of stuff I want to hear from a President that represents all of us. Medical billing overcharges everyone and they always do it to fill there pocket's. I hope The President does more. Who cares if you lose your house is what medical billing will say. If you have more insurance they charge you double and more to get more for the same bill. Medical billing is crippling the country.
@tulanzuya
@tulanzuya 5 жыл бұрын
It's the insurance companies that set most prices. If they will pay up to $50 for one pill, that's what the med corps will charge. It's an unholy alliance between the medical corporations and the insurance companies. The doctors have to bill according to the rules of the medical corporations they all work for. It was not like that when doctors could be in independent practice for themselves. And why can't they be in independent practice anymore? Once again, INSURANCE - malpractice insurance that is so impossibly expensive that individual docs can't afford it. They have to join "groups" - i.e. medical corporations - to split the cost. I think it's high time the insurance industries start to answer for their cutthroat crimes against humanity.

The public should be charged the same price as the insurance companies. The bill might be $12,000.00 as submitted to Medicare, but they might pay only $778.00 according to their list of standard prices. Insurance companies will pay the $778.00 but the public has to pay the $12,000.00. This is not fair. We can afford the $778, but not the 12k. Why is there a double standard ?

@@sassygil6675 - They just don't set up any kind of alternate payment for self-pay patients. There isn't any option. We have to be charged the same as they would charge the HIGHEST PRICED insurance company's payment - for instance if the doctor accepts 10 kinds of insurance and Blue Cross pays the highest amount for a certain procedure, that is what the self-pay person has to be charged. At least, that is how most medical billing offices operate - once again at the direction of the medical corporation under which the doctors practice.
@opossom1968
@opossom1968 5 жыл бұрын
thats odd, I am self pay, i pay all my medical out of pocket and i have insurance, forced by Obama, Blue Cross Blue Shield. Now i must say i only go to Private Practice doctors, Doctors who own their own practice and the building. I have brought up medical billing to my doctor in conversations during visits, He said and showed me, i am charged significantly less then the insurance company. Why? because the insurance industry will not pay the actual cost, only 25% or less, so he charges the insurance more to compensate for that difference. He also showed me a stack of unpayed medical tests that people needed, that was submitted that the insurance would not pay. each time i see my doctor the visit is 90$ plus blood draw 12$ supplies 5$ total, 117$. Now for my meds i use the insurance and pay the Co-Pay, which is way less then the cost of the meds. Now let me say my Doctor does not accept insurance anymore due to the company's not paying. My wife summits the bill to Blue Cross Blue Shield which they refund 100%. My doctor knows this and said many more people need to do insurance company's this way, but are too lazy to do the paperwork or pay out of pocket. I also had Emergency back surgery, cost to me payed out of pocket 50K, this happened to me on a Wednesday, i was in surgery Friday, Doctor knew i was self pay as my general doctor referred me to him. The 50k also included the operation room and his team of assistants. NOW the Hospital charged me 100k for the 2 hours for the Operation room and recovery room, no hospital say, i was up and walking again 30 min after surgery. This was negotiated down to 7k by my 2 doctors, i payed happily. well worth it for having a disk rupture and wrap around my sciatic nerve instantly rendering walking impossible and pain so bad i would pass out when moved. My wife submitted the bill and it was reimbursed 100%. I am thankful, to have found actually caring doctor's who are honest enough to only charge self pay people the actual cost of medical procedures and for the knowledge to care for me correctly. There are many insurance company's who work like this, Medicaid is not one of them, they WILL NOT reimburse you for out of pocket expenses and only pay 15% to the doctor or hospital of the bill. this is one reason why doctors and hospitals charge so much, BUT only one reason, the other reasons are for profit.

If your total bill or deductible is going to kill you, explain, (and be prepared to prove,) your situation. If you're a wise guy trying be shrewd, save your breath, . Billing for procedures that were not done is another reason health insurance is high. Corruption everywhere even in healthcare. This is pure greed. But one problem is that so many people have no insurance at all. They use the system, but do not pay their bills. Drives up cost for those who pay. A lot is due to illegal immagrants. We already get meds from China and India but Canada gets American made drugs at greatly reduced prices and the past administrations made it illegal to buy from Canada. I want American made drugs made with quality but we need to do something about all the lawsuits, that’s why they have drove out American made drugs. There is always a possibility that a certain person might react negatively to a drug. We have the FDA and they are supposed to only approve drugs after long testing for safety. Get the lawyers out of medicine except in extreme circumstances. I’m tired of seeing ads on TV about let’s sue if you’ve taken this drug. Life is risky, doctors don’t dispense prescriptions because they want to harm people. The people come to them suffering asking for help. Long ago if you had an earache somebody blew smoke in it and before that when a person was laying sick and dying a man in funny clothes danced around a fire to help you. We’ve come a long way but medicine is not an exact science

I have to think that the insurance companies, medical conglomerates and pharmaceutical companies are all in this together. And, no, social medicine will not help. I have been saying this all along the problem with the USA medical service is the outrageous costs and over billing of patients. The problem is cost not coverage. If you make it more affordable, more people will buy it. Prescription drugs are much cheaper outside the USA and the surprise billing is a crime. $17k for a hundred dollar test. If you ever go to a emergency room, no one knows the cost of the procedure. Obama's ACA cost me plenty. I am self employed and my insurance went from $1750 to over 6k a year. The deductible also went from $1750 to 6k a year.

Thank you President Trump and his team that is working on reforming the medical industry. My recent experience, I had an insurance policy that was termed "medicare advantage" it worked GREAT. However, in 2019 the county I lived in was forced to drop this coverage. I stayed with the same ins. company "Medica" and purchased their BEST plan at 2.5 times the premium rate. It was a simple policy, they claimed to pay the balance on everything Medicare covered. The problem is that due to providers coding errors in billing Medicare rejects about 10% of the bills in error. This of course means that I am billed personally and have to fight to get the billing errors corrected. Needless to say, Medicare and Medica the supplement company have no motivation to assist me in correcting the errors they made. It's a nightmare.
