Ay I just got off the ship from the September 11th - 18th cruise and I came here looking for the video of the rescue from last night (September 17th) I believe I saw you at dinner as the pirate and a photographer! If I'm correct I just want to let you know how awesome the trip was and that I appreciate everything the crew does!

That was an easy one. You should watch the coast guard guys up in Alaska.. Now those fellers got balls of steel to even take off in the weather they save people from.

Amazing footage. Praying crew member is doing ok. Both the Coast Guard and Carnival are top notch at these types of incidents.

Agreed. This happened on my Carnival cruise this past Saturday. I saw the helicopter in & out from my balcony but only because I went to lido (not knowing what was happening) and was immediately turned away and told to go to my room. They were so organized and everyone was ready to respond to whatever happened.

For those wondering what the Coast Guard plane was going to do, if you look at the weather, it doesn’t appear to be too pretty. There was probably a lot of storms or something in the area. And considering how far away this rescue was from shore, it’s quite dangerous for the helicopter crew. The airplane has significantly better weather radar and can tolerate winds and bad weather much better than a helicopter. This allows the airplane to best guide the helicopter through the weather. And should something happen to the helicopter enroute to land, the airplane can give real-time location and updates to the coast guard.

Is it just me that whether in an emergency such as this or other disasters we have had here at home where I live, just the site or our American Military coming to our aid for whatever the reason, my heart fills with so much pride and greatfulness. Even when another country has had a disaster and the take humanitarian aid, I fill with pride that we are Americans and will help anyone in need who ask for our aid, even our enemies at the time bow and accept our aid. When we had 911 and Katrina, the world paid us back as best they could. Even the extremely poorest country gave something and that was so humbling. God bless this crew member, his family, the members of the US Coast Guard, and their families. I am truely proud to be an American.

Several years ago a Chinese commercial aircraft experienced severe clear air turbulence and many people were not buckled in ( duh) and got the crap slammed out of them. Their flight path was near one of our now-closed military airfields, Air Force Station Shemya, Alaska and they were allowed to land and receive medical aid and triage the victims and then transported to Anchorage, AK And that was a HIGH Level of security access base at the time. I used to fly into Shemya many times with the USCG on HC-130's.

Helos burn up a lot of fuel in a hoist evolution so it is imperative that they keep it short and sweet considering the distance from the nearest land/refuel point. The first one on scene was the HC-144, fixed-wing aircraft who briefed the master of the vessel on course and speed and where the hoist was going to be conducted from and that shortens the time on scene for the H-65 helo considerably. In my 20 year career with the USCG, I participated in about 20 of these from Alaska to the Carribean. In the Gulf of Mexico near the offshore oilfields it was common practice to land on a nearby platform just before the hoist if possible and take on fuel then go make the hoist, a standing agreement with the oil company so we could use there resources, we would record how much fuel we used and reimburse them if they wanted, seldom was that the case though.

With this so crowded ship is even hard to get the needed person. I do cruises every year but not crowded ship like this. Is this typical from Carnival? I always cruise with Royal Caribbean and never so packed like this one.
@donsutube19745 жыл бұрын
Two things make the ship look crowded. First, passengers were advised to head to the front of the ship away from the rear of the ship so they would not be in danger from the helicopter in case of a mishap during the evacuation. Second, everyone knew the helicopter was coming and wanted to watch the evacuation so almost all passengers were on deck and not down on the lower decks.

In true government fashion (how many government workers does it take to change a light bulb), we have the Coast Guard chopper PLUS an "observer plane". Wonder what the plane is going to do in the middle of the ocean. Observe? Take notes? Who knows.
@Doomsday4995 жыл бұрын
It acts as a mobile comms relay, and command post, while the helicopter performs as the SAR asset. Pretty standard whenever USCG is deployed to cruise / larger ships.

@jonathanp18842 жыл бұрын
Pretty standard but another waste of government money. When I was in the USCG we did find ways to save our government money though. Out pentagon could do the same job with maybe 75% of the costs. We need accountability and financial discipline.
