Why does it take so to get airborne?

They start one engine at a time that way if something goes wrong they can shut it down and they also have a checklist to go through before take off. And they have to make sure the engines are in the correct rpm range for the main and tail rotor.

Those helicopters fly over my house almost every day. Sometimes when there is other air traffic higher up, they pass over just 100' above. Every window in the house rattles. My neighbors hate it but i look forward to their low passes. Twin 1000 HP engines i was told.

Yes because both engines are already started and the rotor is prevented to spin by the tail rotor otherwise the engines wouldnt have enough energy to start and spin the rotor. Other helicopters can start without having the rotor brake on that is why they spin slower and get faster as the engine gets running.
