Would you be willing to make a video about taking care of your hair while in med school? Is getting braids done frequently even worth it?

Significant weight loss is not always an indicator of health. If anything, from a clinical standpoint, when a patient presents with significant weight loss, one may actually be concerned they are very sick. Let’s think before we comment and stop policing people’s bodies on the internet. Y’all think you’re complimenting me, but you’re really not. My goal and channel focus is to provide content on my journey navigating medicine. Each and every person should worry about their respective body and I’ll worry about mine, respectfully.

I almost made a comment about your weight loss but saw your comment. I took some to really think on this and I appreciate you for educating us even thought it is not really your responsibility. You are completely correct and I hope you are doing well mentally, physically, emotionally etc. BESIDES weight loss. I think diet culture has trained a lot of people subconsciously to see weight loss no matter the circumstances as a good thing and it's a natural instinct to congratulate them. From now on I think it's best to not comment on weight at all if the video topic is not about weight.

Thank you for this! One thing someone told me last year before I took step was to try and get out of the mindset of “If this happens, then I will be fulfilled and happy”. I am very grateful that step one is over by God’s grace but like you experienced with your IM rotation I’m also struggling in my own rotation and it has gotten to me mentally. Getting to the other side isn’t always glitz and glamor therefore I think it’s always important to try and value to positive things on the side that you are currently on. Really loved your reflection and I am looking forward to watching your vlog!

This was a great video. You have a lot of experience and success (as well as struggles and ups & downs) with navigating med school and Step 1 by now, and I have watched your videos in real time, and been cheering for you in real time since you began med school.so I can believe and remember it all. Congrats on passing Step 1, and on all you have learned these past few years. Prayers and best wishes as you move forward, and learn and grow and help people even more.

@@SeunSpeaks both. It’s hard to get support when you are a triple minority. Black, female, and a mother. Family and friends can tell you a lot of things but in the end sometimes as the mother it’s all on you. I’ve made it work and succeed without any breaks in Med school but it’s definitely changed me forever.

Significant Weight loss is not always an indicator of health. That’s a very problematic statement to make. If anything, from a clinical standpoint, when a patient presents with significant weight loss, one may actually be concerned they are very sick or something is going on. So this is no compliment to me. Let’s think before we comment and stop policing people’s bodies on the internet.

I am only sadly a sophomore in high school. My DREAM is to go to medical school and become a surgeon. I know I am thinking all of this way too young at the age I am at. But I just can’t stop thinking about it. I cannot imagine myself in any other specialty rather than in the medical field. I see myself as a surgeon perhaps, but I just want to go to a good college for pre med and get in med school. Like I said, I am thinking about this way too young. Any advice for me as only a sophomore in high school!? Big thanks!!!! PS congrats on making it in medical school, and getting so far!!! I know you’ll get to your dreams some day 😊

Yes, focus on being in high school. It’s good to have goals and aspirations. Medicine isn’t going anywhere so there’s no need to make a 10 year plan now. Focus on doing things you enjoy right now. Focus on being a good HIGH SCHOOL student. Right now it sounds like you are chasing after the romanticized idea of becoming a doctor, which misses the very point I was making in this video. It’s good to plan, it’s good to have a vision, it helps us keep focus, but it’s also okay to live in the now & reality. You are in high school so your age is probably, what, 14?15? Your job right now is to do well in school, find extracurriculars that bring you JOY, that make you feel like you are fulfilling purpose.
