@@nataliemasone9047 HI Natalie, so I would consider adding to this idea by reflecting on what you have gained from studying across the country. Have you met a diverse student body, people with varying cultural backgrounds...people you would have never really connected with if not otherwise. So not only that you are willing to move but that you value the enriching qualities of living and learning within difference. Good luck!

I want to convey that I am interested in a career in academia and will bring a research background to whichever institution I am accepted to. My research projects are sporadic and cover a myriad of seemingly unrelated topics. How do I convey that 1) I took on these projects to diversify my skill set and stay open minded, to better develop my research skills rather than focus on a single area of study (I don't want to come off as unfocused), 2) that my research experience is an asset that I can bring to programs, 3) that further career development and guidance/mentorship in this area is something I desire from programs? I want to strike the balance between identifying my strengths but also outlining my career goals without being *too* narrow in the programs I am reaching out to. Thank you so much!

@@archana5663 You're thinking about the right things...the main thing I would begin with is what image, description or story can you tell about one of your research experiences to show your interest in diverse research...a time you were out of your element initially or were asked to do something new/ different within the lab and you were all in. Then go into the wide range of research experiences that you have perhaps with spurts of imagery about them and then go into reflection which is what you have above here. Good luck!

Lol, the number of ways I have seen people try to rephrase "I love to help people" is crazy. I think many students do need to learn to "show not tell" when they are writing their personal statements. I think these are great examples for students to keep in mind and also remind them to reflect on experiences more before deciding to write.

Hi Mattie, thanks for watching. Yes, I do. I also have a program to work with you as you build your essay - to take you to final draft. You scheduled a chat with me I believe. I'll give you all the details then. Talk soon.

Hi Dr. Josie, I had two sentiments I wanted to convey but was finding difficult. The first is where I was an orientation leader for a first-year in university and I was able to help her emotionally and academically through a tough time. I'm not sure how I can go about linking this to medicine since she wasn't a patient, but this experience helped me understand I liked helping people, which would be nice to have as a physician. The second is the sentiment that I want to help those who are part of an underprivileged community meet their healthcare needs. My own family situation at one point met an underprivileged status and I want to do my part in helping those who are disadvantaged.
@WriteYourAcceptance
@WriteYourAcceptance 4 жыл бұрын
HI Martin, the first experience is interesting...I would make sure you step back and see that your ps is balanced with enough patient centric experiences...if not this may fit better in your activities section and not the ps. If it does make it to the ps then decide whether you begin your essay with this then the last line could be a thesis where you connect this exp to medicine...like as a doctor I will prioritize my patient's emotional and physical needs...so they feel... the second one is a popular sentiment in the ps for many students. I would consider couching the reflection with your personal family exp or tell a story of helping a patient from an underserved community then connect that to your personal ex and then state lessons/ aspirations. Make it personal so it doesn't read generic.

Hi Dr. Josie, I am starting my personal statement. In my freshmen year of college, I went on a volunteer trip to Peru and that was very enriching to me to see the disparity of healthcare between third world countries vs US. I saw the conditions in the hospitals and how mucher lower the overall care was. I was determined to learn more about understanding underrepresented care for minority groups, especially children. After my trip, I came back to the US and was motivated to help bridge providing culturally component care to the maximum quality so I worked with underprivileged children, volunteered with underprivilged children, did an internship that helped provide medical services/supplies to refugees/immigrants so they can built a better life. I even went as far as to persue a minor in Spanish, and take several classes of French and Hindi to better communicate with everyone and it eventually payed off. I really want to center my personal statement around humility, persistent, and motivation. How should I tie in all these ideas together? I really want to help minority groups in healthcare after my M.D. degree but I am afraid that all of this is too specific?
@WriteYourAcceptance

Honestly, it is sometimes better to be super specific because you show how intentional you have been with your service and experiences. I think you can totally link the experiences you mention here with your central theme of persistence and humility - both culturally and intellectually.

Hi! I have a question regarding how to tell your story and how many stories to tell. My journey to pursue medicine has been very gradual, building on small, impactful events-there isn’t one sudden instance in which I knew, “This is what I want to do.” Each instance that drew me closer to medicine seems to have built on another, so choosing one or two to expand on seems hollow; however, I don’t want to run the risk of not giving the rich details of an individual story because I want to tell 5-6 different ones. What advice might you have?
@WriteYourAcceptance
@WriteYourAcceptance 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Blake, thanks for reaching out. I mean I think you are already thinking about quite thoughtfully. You can definitely do 5-6 stories and what I would do is to start writing them out as mini stories, very image driven, descriptive narrative...then see how you want to organize them - if you want one to be like a narrative frame starting and ending your essay, or chronological...hope this helps. good luck!

So there is debate amongst my colleagues as to whether we should use past or present tense when telling our patient stories. Earlier I thought I heard you vie for the present tense and then return to past when examining “how did this impact you/you impact this?”. But do you have further insight on the matter?
@WriteYourAcceptance
@WriteYourAcceptance 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. It can get tricky but main rule you should remember is that you describe a story in past tense - Turning the corner, I saw a bird swoop down. (saw) [or] After discussing her prognosis, She looked relieved. (relieved). However, when you are in the narrative you use narrative present, meaning when in dialogue the dialogue is in present tense - I asked her how she felt and she responded with "I feel great." Hope this helps!

Hi my names Elaina and I’m currently a junior in high school. I’m an athlete (soccer player) and also am aspiring to be a pediatrician. Do you have any good colleges in mind for sports, medicine, and childhood development? Thank you for your time!

Hi Elaina, honestly those are pretty mainstream majors. Whether you want to play officially or club may factor into your decision. As long as you do well, high GPA, take pre-reqs, you should be good!

Hi! I wanted to find a way to only share glimpses of my story in my personal statement so i can dedicate the whole application for the entire journey. in my personal statement i wanted to convey that i wanted to be a primary care physician for neglected community members in the healthcare. people who have any kind of physical/mental/intellectual disabilities, people who don’t speak english aa their first language, the elderly, women of color etc. i have extensive experience working with people who have special needs and years of research dedicated to autism along with a publication. i am finding trouble taking glimpses out as i also want to talk about the role my culture played in me developing my interest in medicine. can u please help me
@WriteYourAcceptance
@WriteYourAcceptance 2 жыл бұрын
so one way you can start thinking about connecting your culture with your experiences is to think through how your culture views conditions like autism or physical/ intellectual disabilities...do you have any personal experiences where you saw someone in your cultural community isolated or marginalized ...or the opposite maybe you had someone you looked up to within your family or extended community that served or helped to create belonging for marginalized/ vulnerable groups then that kind of sparked an interest ...then middle part would be your experiences and how they advance your why medicine. good luck
